Psychoanatomical substrates of Bálint's syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: From a series of glimpses, we perceive a seamless and richly detailed visual world. Cerebral damage, however, can destroy this illusion. In the case of Bálint's syndrome, the visual world is perceived erratically, as a series of single objects. The goal of this review is to explore a range of psychological and anatomical explanations for this striking visual disorder and to propose new directions for interpreting the findings in Bálint's syndrome and related cerebral disorders of visual processing. METHODS: Bálint's syndrome is reviewed in the light of current concepts and methodo

[Pathogenesis and psychosocial consequences of post-concussion syndrome].

About 35% of subjects with head injury (HI) suffer from postconcussion syndrome (PCS). These disturbances can be chronic or even permanent. Such patients are discharged from hospital without any apparent problems, but it is often the case that their families, and sometimes even they themselves, start to notice the emergence of new problems. They may exhibit affective changes, such as thinking that they are worthless, alone and without any future perspectives. When they are left without the help of specialists and/or family and friends, their problems gain even greater significance. PCS include

Hemodynamics of blood pressure responses during active and passive coping.

This laboratory study was designed to address a number of interrelated issues regarding cardiovascular reactivity to psychological stress. One objective was to extend the previous research comparing cardiovascular responses during active versus passive coping, by comparing responses to two task conditions designed to be similar in all ways except the opportunity to make a response influencing the task's outcome. A second objective was to compare responses to two different passive film tasks, which differed in outcome uncertainty and the degree of vicarious active coping achieved through identi

Health literacy and self-efficacy as predictors of self-care behaviors in patients with hematological malignancies: A multicenter cross-sectional study in northeastern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Self-care is vital for patients with hematological malignancies (HMs) to manage the severe side effects of chemotherapy. While social support is a traditional focus of care, internal psychological resources may be more critical for sustaining treatment adherence in isolated therapeutic settings. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of self-care behaviors and evaluate the extent to which health literacy and self-efficacy predict these behaviors among patients with HMs in northeastern Thailand. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study, conducted from August to December 20

Physical education and psychosocial vulnerability in adolescent suicide-related risk: a transnational cross-sectional explainable machine-learning analysis of student health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent suicide attempt is a major public health concern linked to psychosocial distress, school environment, health-risk behaviors, and physical activity patterns. This study aimed to develop an explainable XGBoost model for adolescent suicide-attempt status and to determine whether physical inactivity and low physical education (PE) participation could serve as informative school-based indicators. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Global School-based Student Health Survey conducted in Argentina in 2018, Anguilla in 2016, and Jamaica in 2017. The Argentina dataset was used

How Affective States Moderate the Relationship of Pain Catastrophizing With Pain Severity in Patients With Acute and Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors, including mood, affect, and pain catastrophizing, critically influence pain perception. We aimed to examine the relationships of these factors with pain trajectories in both acute postsurgical pain (APSP) and chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) cohorts. METHODS: We included 31 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and 21 patients with CNCP. All included patients completed the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) questionnaire. In addition, patients reported their status within their natural environment (ten times a day for 6 days) using an experience s

A Multimodal Deep Learning Model for Objective Identification of Sub-health Status in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sub-health is an intermediate state between health and disease. Early diagnosis in clinical practice is difficult, which delays timely intervention. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) constitution theory divides sub-health into eight categories; however, existing diagnostic tools mainly focus on psychological assessment and lack objective phenotypic indicators. Multimodal technology provides a new direction for the objective diagnosis of sub-health by integrating objective human phenotypic images with expert experience. METHODS: Tongue images, facial images, and infrared thermal

Machine learning-based computational validation of the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment framework in relation to hazardous drinking.

BACKGROUND: Addiction is a multifaceted disorder driven by complex neurobiological and psychological mechanisms. The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) framework offers a dimensional mechanistic approach, focusing on three core domains: incentive salience, negative emotionality, and executive function. This study aimed to validate the ANA framework in relation to hazardous drinking using a machine learning approach, with the hypothesis that incentive salience and negative emotionality would be most strongly associated with drinking severity. METHODS: We analysed two independent dataset

What is the most effective non-pharmacological treatment for poor sleep quality in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients? a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) features poor sleep quality due to nocturnal dyspnea and psychological distress, leading to increased hospital admissions and reduced quality of life. Considering patient preference and existing evidence, non-pharmacological intervention, i.e. cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), on sleep for COPD patients had its potential efficacy. However, current guidelines do not include sleep management as standard care, and there is a lack of comprehensive reviews on this topic. This systematic review hence evaluated the effectivenes

Multidimensional psychosocial screening in routine cardiac care: preliminary findings from a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is common among patients with cardiovascular disease. While European Society of Cardiology (ESC) position papers highlight the relevance of mental health in cardiology care, psychosocial assessment remains inconsistently implemented in routine clinical practice. METHODS: In this preliminary cross-sectional survey, patients attending a tertiary cardiology department completed an anonymous multidimensional psychosocial screening during routine care. Standardized instruments assessed depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), generalized anxiety (GAD-7), heart-focused anxiet

Suicide prevention in primary health care among socially vulnerable populations: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide remains a major public health challenge worldwide, particularly among socially vulnerable populations who experience disproportionate exposure to social determinants associated with suicide risk and barriers to mental healthcare. Primary health care (PHC) is often the first point of contact with healthcare services and therefore plays a critical role in suicide prevention. METHODS: This narrative review was conducted according to the SANRA guidelines. A structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed to identify evidence on suicid

SADIE: a longitudinal Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms in Italian university students - a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: University students experience escalating academic, social and financial stress, resulting in high prevalence of anxiety (18%-40%), depression (12-35%) and burnout (20-30%). The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these issues, but most studies report symptom remission post-lockdown, highlighting the need for long-term prospective data on symptom trajectories and risk factors. The Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms (SADIE) study aims to (1) estimate the prevalence and incidence of anxiety, depression, burnout and suicidal ideation in Italian univers

Forms and Contexts of Child Sexual Abuse in Taiwan: Associations With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Mental Health Outcomes, and Revictimization.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) in non-Western contexts remains understudied, particularly with respect to how different forms and perpetrator-victim relationships are connected to other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how they shape mental health and revictimization risk over time. This study examines the prevalence of CSA among Taiwanese children and its associations with other ACEs, psychiatric symptoms, and subsequent revictimization, with attention to both the form of sexual abuse and the perpetrator-victim relationship. Data were drawn from a nationally representative, longitudinal sur

From innovation to implementation: a case report on virtual reality for chronic pain and psychological well-being in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging non-pharmacologic intervention for chronic pain management among Veterans. Although randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy of skills-based VR interventions such as RelieVRx for reducing pain and anxiety, less is known about how these interventions can be implemented within real-world interdisciplinary care settings in the Caribbean or how they influence patient engagement and psychological outcomes in routine practice. This case series aims to describe real-world implementation and patient-level outcomes with Veter
