Approach to breast magnetic resonance imaging interpretation.

With the increasing use of breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging comes the expectation that the breast radiologist is as fluent in its interpretation as in that of mammography and breast ultrasonography. Knowledge of who should be included for imaging and how to perform the imaging are as essential as interpreting the images. When reading the examination, the radiologist should approach the images from both a global and focused perspective, synthesizing findings into a report that includes a management plan. This article reviews a systematic and organized approach to breast MR imaging interpr

The effect of image processing on the detection of cancers in digital mammography.

OBJECTIVE. The objective of our study was to investigate the effect of image processing on the detection of cancers in digital mammography images. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two hundred seventy pairs of breast images (both breasts, one view) were collected from eight systems using Hologic amorphous selenium detectors: 80 image pairs showed breasts containing subtle malignant masses; 30 image pairs, biopsy-proven benign lesions; 80 image pairs, simulated calcification clusters; and 80 image pairs, no cancer (normal). The 270 image pairs were processed with three types of image processing: standard

Specific functional connectivity alterations of the dorsal striatum in young people with depression.

BACKGROUND: Altered basal ganglia function has been implicated in the pathophysiology of youth Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Studies have generally focused on characterizing abnormalities in ventral "affective" corticostriatal loops supporting emotional processes. Recent evidence however, has implicated alterations in functional connectivity of dorsal "cognitive" corticostriatal loops in youth MDD. The contribution of dorsal versus ventral corticostriatal alterations to the pathophysiology of youth MDD remains unclear. METHODS: Twenty-one medication-free patients with moderate-to-severe MD

White matter involvement in chronic musculoskeletal pain.

UNLABELLED: There is emerging evidence that chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with anatomic and functional abnormalities in gray matter. However, little research has investigated the relationship between chronic musculoskeletal pain and white matter. In this study, we used whole-brain tract-based spatial statistics and region-of-interest analyses of diffusion tensor imaging data to demonstrate that patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain exhibit several abnormal metrics of white matter integrity compared with healthy controls. Chronic musculoskeletal pain was associated with lower

A variational framework for joint detection and segmentation of ovarian cancer metastases.

Detection and segmentation of ovarian cancer metastases have great clinical impacts on women's health. However, the random distribution and weak boundaries of metastases significantly complicate this task. This paper presents a variational framework that combines region competition based level set propagation and image matching flow computation to jointly detect and segment metastases. Image matching flow not only detects metastases, but also creates shape priors to reduce over-segmentation. Accordingly, accurate segmentation helps to improve the detection accuracy by separating flow computati

Tissue characterization using mean gray value analysis in deep infiltrating endometriosis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate differences in tissue characterization using three-dimensional sonographic mean gray value (MGV) between retrocervical and rectosigmoid deeply infiltrating endometriosis, and to assess intra- and interobserver concordance in MGV quantification. METHODS: In this retrospective study, stored ultrasound volumes from 50 premenopausal women (mean age, 32 years) with 57 histologically confirmed nodules of deep endometriosis were retrieved from our database for analysis. A single experienced operator had acquired all volumes. For each nodule, the MGV was evaluated using vir

Automated volumes-of-interest identification for classical and atypical Parkinsonian syndrome differentiation using T2' MR imaging.

OBJECTIVES: In clinical routine, patients with classical Parkinsonian syndromes (CPS) need to be differentiated from those with atypical Parkinsonian syndromes (APS), particularly with respect to prognosis and treatment decision. To date, this diagnosis is mainly based on clinical criteria, leading to failure rates up to 25%, motivating the development of image-based decision support systems. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in particular T2´ image sequences have been suggested as a potential marker for differential diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether automatically

Region-based nasopharyngeal carcinoma lesion segmentation from MRI using clustering- and classification-based methods with learning.

In clinical diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) lesion, clinicians are often required to delineate boundaries of NPC on a number of tumor-bearing magnetic resonance images, which is a tedious and time-consuming procedure highly depending on expertise and experience of clinicians. Computer-aided tumor segmentation methods (either contour-based or region-based) are necessary to alleviate clinicians' workload. For contour-based methods, a minimal user interaction to draw an initial contour inside or outside the tumor lesion for further curve evolution to match the tumor boundary is prefer

Topological properties of large-scale structural brain networks in children with familial risk for reading difficulties.

Developmental dyslexia is a neurobiological deficit characterized by persistent difficulty in learning to read in children and adults who otherwise possess normal intelligence. Functional and structural connectivity data suggest that developmental dyslexia could be a disconnection syndrome. However, whether abnormalities in connectivity exist in beginning readers at-risk for reading difficulties is unknown. Using graph-theoretical analysis, we investigated differences in global and regional topological properties of structural brain networks in 42 beginning readers with (FH+) and without (FH-)

Constrained snake vs. conventional snake for carotid ultrasound automated IMT measurements on multi-center data sets.

Accurate intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement of the carotid artery from minimal plaque ultrasound images is a relevant clinical need, since IMT increase is related to the progression of atherosclerosis. In this paper, we describe a novel dual snake-based model for the high-performance carotid IMT measurement, called Carotid Measurement Using Dual Snakes (CMUDS). Snakes (which are deformable contours) adapt to the lumen-intima (LI) and media-adventitia (MA) interfaces, thus enabling the IMT computation as distance between the LI and MA snakes. However, traditional snakes might be unable to

Infrared thermal imaging as a novel evaluation method for deep vein thrombosis in lower limbs.

PURPOSE: Early detection of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is critical to prevent clinical pulmonary thromboembolism. However, most conventional methods for diagnosing DVT are functionally limited and complicated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of infrared-thermal-imaging (IRTI), a novel imaging detection or screening technique, in diagnosis of DVT in animal models. METHODS: DVT model of femoral veins was established in nine New Zealand rabbits. The right hind femoral vein was embolized and the contralateral one served as a nonembolized control. Measurements of IRTI, compression

The contribution of chemical exchange to MRI frequency shifts in brain tissue.

Recent high-field MRI studies based on resonance frequency contrast have revealed brain structure with unprecedented detail. Although subtle magnetic susceptibility variations caused by iron and myelin seem to be important to this contrast, recent research on protein solutions suggests that chemical exchange between water and macromolecular protons may contribute substantially to the observed gray-white matter frequency contrast. To investigate this, we performed spectroscopic MRI experiments at 14 T on samples of fixed human visual cortex and fresh pig brain. To allow direct observation of an

Motor control of jaw movements: An fMRI study of parafunctional clench and grind behavior.

Jaw-clenching and tooth-grinding associated with bruxism can contribute to abnormal tooth wear and pain in the masticatory system. Clench and tooth-grinding jaw-movement tasks were evaluated in a block-design fMRI study comparing a dental-control (DC) group with a tooth-grinding (TG) group. Group classification was made prior to imaging based upon self-reported parafunctional clench and grind behavior and clinical evidence of abnormal tooth wear. Group differences in brain activation patterns were found for each task compared to the resting baseline. The DC group showed a more widely distribut

First-trimester assessment of the nasal bones using the retronasal triangle view: a 3-dimensional sonographic study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new sonographic technique for identifying the nasal bones using the retronasal triangle view, ie, the coronal plane at which the palate and frontal processes of the maxilla are simultaneously visualized. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) volumes were acquired from women undergoing first-trimester sonographic screening for aneuploidy by 2 accredited operators. Those data sets in which the fetal face was clearly identified were selected for offline analysis by 2 other observers who were unaware of the sonographic or clinical findings. The nas

Snakules: a model-based active contour algorithm for the annotation of spicules on mammography.

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy. Starting from a natural set of automa

A novel method for blood vessel detection from retinal images.

BACKGROUND: The morphological changes of the retinal blood vessels in retinal images are important indicators for diseases like diabetes, hypertension and glaucoma. Thus the accurate segmentation of blood vessel is of diagnostic value. METHODS: In this paper, we present a novel method to segment retinal blood vessels to overcome the variations in contrast of large and thin vessels. This method uses adaptive local thresholding to produce a binary image then extract large connected components as large vessels. The residual fragments in the binary image including some thin vessel segments (or pi

Three-dimensional ultrasound diagnosis of cleft palate: 'reverse face', 'flipped face' or 'oblique face'--which method is best?

OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of three sonographic techniques, the 'reverse-face', 'flipped-face' and 'oblique-face' methods, for visualizing the hard and soft palate in diagnosing cleft lip and palate (CLP). METHODS: A total of 60 fetuses (10 with CLP) with a gestational age ranging from 20 to 33 weeks were examined. We compared visualization of the secondary palate with the previously described reverse-face and flipped-face methods (the latter modified by us) and the oblique-face method developed by us using Oblique View imaging technology. RESULTS: Among the 10 fetuses with CLP t

In vivo skin elastography with high-definition optical videos.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Continuous measurements of biomechanical properties of skin provide potentially valuable information to dermatologists for both clinical diagnosis and quantitative assessment of therapy. This paper presents an experimental study on in vivo imaging of skin elastic properties using high-definition optical videos. The objective is to (i) investigate whether skin property abnormalities can be detected in the computed strain elastograms, (ii) quantify property abnormalities with a Relative Strain Index (RSI), so that an objective rating system can be established, (iii) determine wh
