Highly conductive coaxial SnO(2)-In(2)O(3) heterostructured nanowires for Li ion battery electrodes.

Novel SnO(2)-In(2)O(3) heterostructured nanowires were produced via a thermal evaporation method, and their possible nucleation/growth mechanism is proposed. We found that the electronic conductivity of the individual SnO(2)-In(2)O(3) nanowires was 2 orders of magnitude better than that of the pure SnO(2) nanowires, due to the formation of Sn-doped In(2)O(3) caused by the incorporation of Sn into the In(2)O(3) lattice during the nucleation and growth of the In(2)O(3) shell nanostructures. This provides the SnO(2)-In(2)O(3) nanowires with an outstanding lithium storage capacity, making them sui

Added value of gastrin receptor scintigraphy in comparison to somatostatin receptor scintigraphy in patients with carcinoids and other neuroendocrine tumours.

Gastrin receptor scintigraphy (GRS) is a new imaging method primarily developed for the detection of metastases of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). As gastrin-binding CCK(2) receptors are also expressed on a variety of other neuroendocrine tumours (NET), we compared GRS to somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) in patients with NET. SRS and GRS were performed within 21 days in a series of 60 consecutive patients with NET. GRS was directly compared with SRS. If lesions were visible on GRS but not detectable by SRS, other imaging modalities (MRI, CT) and follow-up were used for verification.

The role of [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and [(111)In]-diethylenetriaminepentaacetate-D-Phe-pentetreotide scintigraphy in the localization of ectopic adrenocorticotropin-secreting tumors causing Cushing's syndrome.

Conventional imaging modalities cannot localize the source of ACTH in 30-50% of patients with Cushing's syndrome (CS) caused by ectopic ACTH secretion (EAS). We prospectively evaluated whether [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) or [(111)In]-diethylenetriaminepentaacetate-D-Phe-pentetreotide (OCT) at higher than standard doses of radionuclide (18 mCi; H-OCT), can detect these tumors. Seventeen patients with presumed EAS based on inferior petrosal sinus sampling results underwent routine anatomical imaging studies [computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance i

Evaluation of 111In-DTPA-folate as a receptor-targeted diagnostic agent for ovarian cancer: initial clinical results.

UNLABELLED: The cell-membrane folate receptor is a potential molecular target for tumor-selective drug delivery, including radiolabeled folate-chelate conjugates for diagnostic imaging. We report here the initial clinical study of such an agent, (111)In-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-folate, evaluated for diagnosis of ovarian malignancy. METHODS: Thirty-five women were enrolled in a phase I/II clinical study, with 33 completing the surgical follow-up required by the study protocol for definition of disease status. Patients either had a pathologically proven malignancy or were sched

[Carcinoid of the appendix. A case report].

A case of a young male operated on for acute appendicitis due to a carcinoid of the base is reported. Since the tumor was infiltrating the resection margin of the appendix, the patient was later treated with a right hemicolectomy. Carcinoid tumor is unusual, but can be encountered several times during the career of a surgeon (1/200-300 appendicectomy). The tumor is more frequent in women (2-4:1), located at the tip of the appendix (62-78%) and has a diameter less than 1 cm in 70-95% of cases. It is more frequently diagnosed incidentally after an operation for acute appendicitis and occasionall

Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and somatostatin therapy in the evaluation and treatment of malignant thymoma.

PURPOSE: This report illustrates the potential diagnostic and therapeutic utility of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and therapy with somatostatin. METHODS: In-111 pentetreotide (In-111 octreotide), a somatostatin analog, was used to define the receptor status and the extent of disease in a case of malignant thymoma. RESULTS: Subsequent treatment with nonradioactive somatostatin inhibited tumor growth. CONCLUSION: In-111 octreotide may be useful to define tumor receptor status and may provide prognostic information useful in determining subsequent therapy.

Multiple endocrine neoplastic-associated thymic carcinoid tumour in close relatives: octreotide scan as a new diagnostic and follow-up modality. Two case reports.

Thymic carcinoid tumours constitute less than 1% of all carcinoids, and differ markedly from true thymomas in natural history, morphology, prognosis and therapeutic options. New clinical and diagnostic modalities are described in two brothers with thymic carcinoid associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. Octreotide scintigraphy proved useful for diagnosis and follow-up, and somatostatin receptor positivity may provide new prospects for treatment of non-resectable or recurrent tumour.

Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy during treatment with lanreotide in patients with neuroendocrine tumors.

To investigate possible changes in somatostatin receptor expression during treatment with high dose lanreotide, eight patients with neuroendocrine tumors were investigated by [(111)In-DTPA-D-Phe1]-octreotide scintigraphy before and during treatment. The spleen-to-background ratio decreased in all patients, whereas tumor-to-background ratio revealed a heterogeneous pattern with an average increase of 50% (-79% to +1,087%). This finding indicates that lanreotide treatment may influence the binding of radioactively labeled somatostatin to the spleen, while changes in the binding to functioning so

Comparison of octreotide scintigraphy and conventional imaging in medullary thyroid carcinoma.

UNLABELLED: We evaluated the clinical utility of positive somatostatin receptor scintigraphy in patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). METHODS: Twenty-four MTC patients with increased calcitonin levels underwent somatostatin receptor scintigraphy using 111In-pentetreotide (120-200 MBq) with early (4 hr after injection) and delayed (24 hr) whole-body scans and liver SPECT imaging. In Group 1 (12 patients), conventional imaging modalities demonstrated the presence of tumor sites prior to somatostatin receptor scintigraphy; in Group 2 (12 patients), conventional imaging modalities were ne

Leptomeningeal metastases: 111indium-DTPA CSF flow studies.

Thirty consecutive patients with cytologically documented leptomeningeal metastases (LM) underwent intraventricular 111indium-DTPA (In) CSF flow studies (FS). Sixteen patients (53%) had normal In FS. Fourteen patients (47%) had documented compartmentalization of the CSF system. In four patients unsuspected CSF block was confined to the base of brain with limited spinal descent and poor cerebral convexity ascent of In. All patients received whole-brain irradiation and two were subsequently shown to have normal In FS. In 10 other patients, suspected (eight) and unsuspected (two) spinal blocks we…

In-depth evaluation of the cycloaddition--retro-Diels--Alder reaction for in vivo targeting with [(111)In]-DTPA-RGD conjugates.

INTRODUCTION: The spontaneous copper-free tandem 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition-retro-Diels-Alder (tandem crDA) reaction between cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp-d-Phe-Orn(N(3)) [c(RGDfX)] and oxanorbornadiene-DTPA (o-DTPA) or methyloxanorbornadiene-DTPA (mo-DTPA) into two DTPA-c(RGDfX) regioisomers is characterized. Since there is no information on the stability and reaction rate of the tandem crDA reaction in biological media, we set out to characterize these reaction parameters. METHODS: The effects of concentration of the reactants, temperature, pH and reaction environment (serum, blood) on the kinetics of

Fluorescence-enhanced europium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic (DTPA)-monoamide complexes for the assessment of renal function.

Real-time, noninvasive assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is essential not only for monitoring critically ill patients at the bedside, but also for staging and monitoring patients with chronic kidney disease. In our pursuit to develop exogenous luminescent probes for dynamic optical monitoring of GFR, we have prepared and evaluated Eu(3+) complexes of several diethylenetriamine pentaacetate (DTPA)-monoamide ligands bearing molecular "antennae" to enhance metal fluorescence via intramolecular ligand-metal fluorescence resonance energy transfer process. The results show that Eu-DTPA-

Progress in SPECT/CT imaging of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer (other than skin cancer) among men in the United States. Although prostate cancer is one of the few cancers that grow so slowly that it may never threaten the lives of some patients, it can be lethal once metastasized. Indium-111 capromab pendetide (ProstaScint, Cytogen Corporation, Princeton, NJ) imaging is indicated for staging and recurrence detection of the disease, and is particularly useful to determine whether or not the disease has spread to distant metastatic sites. However, the interpretation of 111In-capromab pendetide is challenging…

Effect of chemotherapy on somatostatin receptor detection with octreotide scintigraphy in hormone-refractory prostate cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine cells have been found in all stages of prostate cancer. Neuroendocrine differentiation of prostate adenocarcinoma is a possible target for therapeutic strategies, such as administration of GH analogs (e.g., somatostatin), especially in patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). The presence of receptors for these drugs in tumor cells and tissues is essential and is assessed with 111In-octreotide scintigraphy (Octreoscan). The relationship between these receptors and chemotherapy, the new standard therapy for HRPC, is unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 111I

Trifunctional conjugation reagents. Reagents that contain a biotin and a radiometal chelation moiety for application to extracorporeal affinity adsorption of radiolabeled antibodies.

A method of removing radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from blood using a device external to the body, termed extracorporeal affinity-adsorption (EAA), is being evaluated as a means of decreasing irradiation of noncancerous tissues in therapy protocols. The EAA device uses an avidin column to capture biotinylated-radiolabeled mAbs from circulated blood. In this investigation, three trifunctional reagents have been developed to minimize the potential deleterious effect on antigen binding brought about by the combination of radiolabeling and biotinylation of mAbs required in the EAA appr

Anti-proliferative effect of radiolabelled octreotide in a metastases model in rat liver.

Most neuroendocrine tumours and several other tumours, such as breast carcinoma and malignant lymphoma, express somatostatin receptors (SS-Rs). Lesions expressing these receptors can be visualised by receptor scintigraphy using a low radioactive dose of the radiolabelled SS analogue [111In-DTPA0]octreotide. This radioligand is internalised and transported to the lysosomes with a long residence time of 111In. The aim of this experimental study in rats was to investigate whether the same agent, given in a high radioactive dose, can be used for therapy of hepatic metastases of different tumour ce

Comparative studies on the expression of somatostatin receptor subtypes, outcome of octreotide scintigraphy and response to octreotide treatment in patients with carcinoid tumours.

We have compared the expression of somatostatin receptor (sstr) subtypes with the outcome of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and the effect of somatostatin receptor activation in patients with disseminated carcinoid tumours. Tumour tissues from nine patients with midgut carcinoids (ileal) and three patients with foregut carcinoids (gastric, thymic) were analysed using Northern blotting. Expression of somatostatin receptors was demonstrated in all tumours (12 out of 12), with all five receptor subtypes present in 9 out of 12 tumours.
