Photosensitized rose Bengal-induced phototoxicity on human melanoma cell line under natural sunlight exposure.

Rose Bengal (RB) is an anionic water-soluble xanthene dye, which used for many years to assess eye cornea and conjunctiva damage. RB showed strong absorption maxima (λmax) under visible light followed by UV-B and UV-A. RB under sunlight exposure showed a time-dependent photodegradation. Our results show that photosensitized RB generates (1)O2 via Type-II photodynamic pathway and induced DNA damage under sunlight/UV-R exposure. 2'dGuO degradation, micronuclei formation, and single- and double-strand breakage were the outcome of photogenotoxicity caused by RB. Quenching studies with NaN3 advocat

Obesity interferes with the orosensory detection of long-chain fatty acids in humans.

BACKGROUND: The association between the orosensory detection of lipids, preference for fatty foods, and body mass index (BMI; in kg/m(2)) is controversial in humans. OBJECTIVE: We explored the oral lipid-sensing system and the orosensory-induced autonomic reflex system in lean and obese subjects. DESIGN: Lean (BMI: 19 to <25; n = 30) and obese (BMI >30; n = 29) age-matched men were enrolled. Their oral threshold sensitivity to linoleic acid (LA) was determined by using a 3-alternative forced-choice ascending procedure, and their eating habits were established by the analysis of 4 consecutive

Beyond the role of the reproductive caste of chicatana ants (Atta mexicana) as an alternative protein source: nutritional, food safety, and bioactivity analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mexican leaf-cutter ants (Atta mexicana), also known as chicatana ants, have been consumed in Mexico since pre-Columbian times as a seasonal food commodity and delicacy. Most studies on this edible insect have focused on its nutritional value as a protein source. Because of its proximate composition, this insect can also be considered a source of other important macro- and micronutrients. However, due to its geographic location and collection practices, food safety risks may be present. METHODS: In this study, chicatana ants were collected in Huatusco, Veracruz, Mexico, and anal

Implication of the cooking oil-peroxidation product "hydroxynonenal" for Alzheimer's disease.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is a mitochondrial enzyme that reduces cell injuries via detoxification of lipid-peroxidation product, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (hydroxynonenal). It is generated exogenously via deep-frying of linoleic acid-rich cooking oils and/or endogenously via oxidation of fatty acids involved in biomembranes. Although its toxicity for human health is widely accepted, the underlying mechanism long remained unknown. In 1998, Yamashima et al. have formulated the "calpain-cathepsin hypothesis" as a molecular mechanism of ischemic neuronal death. Subsequently, they found that calpa

Bioactive metabolites of OMEGA-6 and OMEGA-3 fatty acids are associated with inflammatory cytokine concentrations in maternal and infant plasma at the time of delivery.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Inflammation is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. However, unregulated or excessive inflammation during pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and infant morbidities, such as pre-eclampsia, abnormal infant neurodevelopment, or preterm birth. Inflammation is regulated in part by the bioactive metabolites of omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids (FAs). N-6 FAs have been shown to promote pro-inflammatory cytokine environments in adults, while n-3 FAs have been shown to contribute to the resolution of inflammation; however, how these metabolites affect maternal and
