Obstructive sleep apnoea and the autonomic nervous system.

Understanding of the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea, a common yet relatively newly recognized condition, has advanced rapidly in recent years. This condition produces major acute haemodynamic changes and causal relationships with hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity have been proposed. The role that the autonomic nervous system plays in mediating these cardiovascular changes has been the focus of intensive research activity and the development of few techniques in physiological monitoring, such as spectral analysis of heart rate variability, Finapres blood pressure monitoring

Distribution of trigeminohypothalamic and spinohypothalamic tract neurons displaying substance P receptor-like immunoreactivity in the rat.

Primary afferent neurons containing substance P (SP) are apparently implicated in the transmission of noxious information from the periphery to the central nervous system, and SP released from primary afferent neurons acts on second-order neurons with the SP receptor (SPR). In the rat, nociceptive information reached the hypothalamus not only through indirect pathways but also directly through trigeminohypothalamic and spinohypothalamic pathways. Thus, in the present study, the distribution pattern of trigeminohypothalamic and spinohypothalamic tract neurons showing SPR-like immunoreactivity (

Late-effects after treatment for germ-cell cancer with cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin.

During a 5-year period from 1979 to 1983 all patients in Denmark with metastatic non-seminomatous and extragonadal germ cell cancer were treated with 6 cycles of cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin (PVB). Thirty-nine patients referred to the Finsen Institute accepted a follow-up examination of side-effects 3.5-9 years after chemotherapy. Renal toxicity consisted of an irreversible decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in 47% of the patients, while the decrease in GFR was fully reversible in 23%. Significant pulmonary toxicity was observed in smokers and consisted of an irreversible de

Heart rate variability analysis in full-term infants: spectral indices for study of neonatal cardiorespiratory control.

The heart rate and respirations of twenty healthy full-term infants between 30 and 60 h postnatal age were studied during quiet sleep with t … breathing patterns. However, it is possible that differences in the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system control, perhaps related to autonomic maturation, also contribute to group separation. The indices developed from HRV spectral analysis in this investigation may be of value in the study of cardiorespiratory control in neonates.

Role of the autonomic nervous system in the mediation of LHA electrical stimulation-induced effects on insulinemia and glycemia.

The short-term effects of bilateral electrical stimulation of the lateral component of the lateral hypothalamic/medial forebrain bundle area (LHA) on peripheral plasma levels of glucose (G), immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and glucagon (IRG) were measured in food-derived, anesthetized rats in the presence of continuous low i.v. glucose infusion. In normal rats LHA stimulation induced a rapid but moderate rise in IRI in the presence of a simultaneous rapid rise in G. At the end of the 5 min stimulation period the glucose-induced IRI response was clearly attenuated. In rats receiving a continuous p

Emotion Regulation and Emotion Reactivity in Callous-Unemotional (CU) Traits: The Role of Dynamic Physiological Indicators in Youth with Primary and Secondary CU Traits.

Core features of callous-unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., low empathy, lack of guilt, callousness) are underpinned by emotion processing deficits including dysfunction in emotion reactivity (ERc) and emotion regulation (ER). Recent research has suggested the presence of heterogeneity in CU traits, such that the primary variant is biologically rooted and marked by hypoarousal, whereas the secondary variant develops as a response to maltreatment and is marked by hyperarousal. To date, physiological measurement of ERc and ER processes via the parasympathetic nervous system have focused on static me…

Emotional body odors alter autonomic nervous activity during mindfulness training in social anxiety.

Chemosignals found in human body odors (BOs) convey information about a person's emotional state and elicit observable responses in others. While mindfulness typically enhances parasympathetic tone and reduces anxiety, little is known about how BOs modulate these effects. This study investigated how emotional and non-emotional human BOs influence autonomic nervous system activity - heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal activity (EDA) - during mindfulness practice in individuals with social anxiety. The role of baseline HRV as a predictor of intervention outcome was explored. Ninety-ei

Enteric neuro-immune-tumor ecosystem in pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric malignancies: context dependence and translational priorities.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer arise in densely innervated tissues, yet neural regulation remains incompletely integrated into tumor immunology. This narrative review uses the term "enteric neuro-immune-tumor ecosystem" for an operational framework comprising five anatomy-anchored evidence domains: local enteric nervous system remodeling, extrinsic autonomic and sensory regulation, perineural invasion-associated niches, glial-cell-mediated signaling, and microbiota-neuro-immune communication. Hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma are treated a

Effect of Acute Grape Seed Extract Supplementation on Heart Rate Recovery in Young Individuals.

Evidence has suggested that post-exercise heart rate recovery (PHRR) is a useful tool in evaluating cardiac autonomic function. Altered cardiac autonomic function is characterized by heightened sympathetic activation and the abnormal reactivation of the parasympathetic nervous system and is associated with delayed HRR. Although grape seed extract (GSE) supplementation has been shown to increase nitric oxide production and modify sympathetic output, there is limited evidence on its potential beneficial effects on PHRR. We investigated the effect of GSE supplementation on PHRR during sympathetic…

Parasympathetic response in women with coronary vascular dysfunction during mental stress compared to those with non-cardiac chest pain and reference controls.

BACKGROUND: Coronary vascular dysfunction (CVaD) contributes to ischemia even in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. We hypothesize that abnormal autonomic reactivity to mental stress is a key pathophysiologic mechanism in CVaD compared to non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP) and reference control (RC) groups. METHODS: Seventy women (35 with CVaD diagnosed by coronary function testing, 19 with NCCP, and 16 RC) underwent mental stress testing (arithmetic and anger recall) in the Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System study. RC group was asymptomatic with no risk factors and normal exercise

Indirect assessment of autonomic nervous system balance for prediction of hemorrhage: A preclinical study in a porcine model.

Hemorrhage is a common and significant complication of trauma or surgical procedures. Rapid and accurate assessment of a patient's condition during hemorrhage is crucial for management. The primary objective was to describe pupillometry parameters and parasympathetic tone activity (PTA) during hemorrhage. The secondary objective was to develop a model to predict blood losses. In this preclinical study, 15 pigs were used. After anesthesia, 35 mL/kg of blood was removed over 1 h. Hypovolemia was maintained for 90 min. Indirect assessment of autonomic nervous system balance was based on the monit

Passive Hindlimb Cycling Enhances Tolerance of Cardiac Electrical Conduction in Rats with Spinal Cord Injuries.

High-level spinal cord injury (SCI) often disrupts supraspinal control of sympathetic input to the heart. The resulting imbalance in the autonomic nervous system increases the risk of developing cardiac arrhythmias. It was previously demonstrated that passive hindlimb cycling (PHLC) effectively maintains or improves bodily function including cardiovascular performance following SCI. However, it remains unclear whether the exercise can affect cardiac electrical disorders. To address this specific question, we complemented a complete SCI at a high-thoracic level in rats and then performed PHLC f

'Hidden' anger as a risk factor for operational health: An exploratory approach among French military personnel.

Military personnel are repeatedly exposed to multiple stressors, and are sometimes characterized by high levels of anger. Evidence suggests that this anger can become dysfunctional, and impact the health status of populations chronically exposed to stress. In particular, rumination (understood as perseverative thoughts about a past event), provides a theoretical framework for investigating how anger may impact stress regulation abilities in military personnel declared fit for deployment. This exploratory study aimed therefore to examine the impact of the anger profile on psychological sufferin

Enlarged cross-sectional area of the left vagus nerve in patients with major depressive disorder.

PURPOSE: Autonomic dysfunction and a chronic low-grade inflammation are supposed to play a role in the etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). The vagus nerves (VN) form a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system and of the gut-brain axis. They are supposed to exert anti-inflammatory and epithelial barrier protective effects in the gut. A reduced vagal activity was described in patients with MDD. We aimed to examine the VN in patients with MDD with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) and hypothesized that the cross-sectional area (CSA) and the echogenicity of the VNs were altered in…

Examining the Relations Between Children's Vagal Flexibility Across Social Stressor Tasks and Parent- and Clinician-Rated Anxiety Using Baseline Data from an Early Intervention for Inhibited Preschoolers.

Early behavioral inhibition (BI) is a known risk factor for later anxiety disorder. Variability in children's parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) functioning may provide insight into the substantial heterogeneity in anxiety outcomes for children high in BI. However, gaps persist due to an over-reliance on static measures of functioning, which limits our ability to leverage PNS functioning to identify risk for anxiety. We address these gaps using baseline data from an early intervention study of inhibited preschoolers by characterizing vagal flexibility (VF), an index of non-linear change in P…

Analysis of autonomic function during natural defecation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome using real-time recording with a wearable device.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is a factor in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, there are no reports of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity during natural defecation in patients with IBS. We aimed to clarify the relationship between ANS activity and life events, such as defecation and abdominal symptoms, using real-time recording. METHODS: Six patients with IBS and 14 healthy controls were enrolled in this prospective multicenter study. ANS activity was recorded for 24 h using a T-shirt wearable device, and life events were recorded simultaneously in real time using a smartphone

Breastfeeding duration and vagal regulation of infants and mothers.

BACKGROUND: Vagal regulation within the parasympathetic nervous system supports self-regulation and social engagement. Research has suggested that early feeding practices may influence mother-infant vagal functioning. AIM: We aimed to examine the association between breastfeeding duration and mother-infant vagal regulation during an interaction. We hypothesized that breastfeeding duration would be positively associated with adaptive vagal regulation in infants and mothers. METHOD: 204 mother-infant dyads (infant mean age 6 months) completed the face-to-face still-face (FFSF) task. During the…

Insular functional connectivity in migraine with aura.

INTRODUCTION: Insula plays an integrating role in sensory, affective, emotional, cognitive and autonomic functions in migraine, especially in migraine with aura (MA). Insula is functionally divided into 3 subregions, the dorsoanterior, the ventroanterior and the posterior insula respectively related to cognition, emotion, and somatosensory functions. This study aimed at investigating functional connectivity of insula subregions in MA. METHODS: Twenty-one interictal patients with MA were compared to 18 healthy controls (HC) and 12 interictal patients with migraine without aura (MO) and were sc
