Theta and alpha oscillations reflect differences in memory strategy and visual discrimination performance in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The aim of the present study was to investigate alterations in brain oscillatory activity during transient intentional encoding of abstract novel shapes in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Combined time-frequency analyses of alpha and theta power revealed a clear dissociation between PD patients (N=10) and age-matched healthy controls (N=10). PD patients used sub-optimal stimulus encoding strategies for subsequent maintenance and recall, whereas the controls mainly used categorization processes. In contrast to controls, PD patients showed significantly less theta increase and upper alph

Ocular exploration in the dark by patients with visual neglect.

Eye-movements were recorded as patients with visual neglect searched in a completely darkened room to determine whether any light was present. Fixations were confined almost entirely to the right of the midline, and biased rightwards within that area. A control group with visual field defects searched equally to both sides. This shows that neglect patients have a bias to look to the right which is independent of the difficulty they also have in processing sensory information in the left visual field. Results are related to theories of the hemispheric control of attention and to the view that t

[Importance of family examination in juvenile X-linked retinoschisis].

BACKGROUND: Congenital (juvenile) retinoschisis belongs to the group of hereditary vitreoretinopathies. This disorder is inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern and its onset usually occurs in 5- to 10-year-old boys. Presenting clinical signs include decreased visual acuity due to maculopathy. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of a 17-year-old boy with decreased visual acuity, hypermetropia, and bilateral retinoschisis with maculopathy upon fundus examination. In view of a 50% risk of the disorder occurring in the brothers of the affected male, they underwent full ophthalmological an

Domain-specific impairment of source memory following a right posterior medial temporal lobe lesion.

This single case analysis of memory performance in a patient with an ischemic lesion affecting posterior but not anterior right medial temporal lobe (MTL) indicates that source memory can be disrupted in a domain-specific manner. The patient showed normal recognition memory for gray-scale photos of objects (visual condition) and spoken words (auditory condition). While memory for visual source (texture/color of the background against which pictures appeared) was within the normal range, auditory source memory (male/female speaker voice) was at chance level, a performance pattern significantly

Optimized multi-modal action recognition using multi-agent systems and adaptive temporal attention.

The recognition of human actions through visual input poses considerable difficulties owing to the diverse ways in which individuals perform the same actions, the temporal variations that are intrinsic to these actions, and the differing viewpoints from which they are perceived. In order to address the limitations of single-modality methods, researchers have increasingly adopted multimodal visual data fusion strategies. This study presents an optimized deep learning model designed for action recognition by combining multiple data modalities, such as depth, skeleton, and inertial data through a

A Newly Identified YIF1B Frameshift Variant Causing Kaya-Barakat-Masson Syndrome.

BackgroundKaya-Barakat-Masson syndrome (KABAMAS) is a recently described autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in YIF1B, a gene crucial for trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. Disruption of this pathway leads to Golgi disorganization and neuronal dysfunction, resulting in severe developmental delay, visual impairment, and progressive spasticity.Case PresentationWe report an 11-month-old Turkish girl with profound developmental delay, absent head control, poor feeding, laryngomalacia and cortical visual impairm

A high-performance keyboard neural prosthesis enabled by task optimization.

Communication neural prostheses are an emerging class of medical devices that aim to restore efficient communication to people suffering from paralysis. These systems rely on an interface with the user, either via the use of a continuously moving cursor (e.g., mouse) or the discrete selection of symbols (e.g., keyboard). In developing these interfaces, many design choices have a significant impact on the performance of the system. The objective of this study was to explore the design choices of a continuously moving cursor neural prosthesis and optimize the interface to maximize information th

MDMA enhances emotional empathy and prosocial behavior.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy') releases serotonin and norepinephrine. MDMA is reported to produce empathogenic and prosocial feelings. It is unknown whether MDMA in fact alters empathic concern and prosocial behavior. We investigated the acute effects of MDMA using the Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET), dynamic Face Emotion Recognition Task (FERT) and Social Value Orientation (SVO) test. We also assessed effects of MDMA on plasma levels of hormones involved in social behavior using a placebo-controlled, double-blind, random-order, cross-over design in 32 healthy volunteers (

The influence of binocular visual deprivation on the development of visual-spatial attention.

This article examines the effects of visual input on the development of attention by comparing normal children to children, all more than 8 years old, who had been treated for bilateral congenital cataracts during infancy. In Experiment 1, patients pushed a button as soon as they detected a target that appeared 100, 400, or 800 msec after a central cue. The cue either validly cued the upcoming location or invalidly cued the wrong location. Patients (n = 16) performed normally at the 100 msec and 400 msec stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). However, when the cue preceded the target by the 800 msec

Spatial and Temporal High Processing of Visual and Auditory Stimuli in Cervical Dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Investigation of spatial and temporal cognitive processing in idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) by means of specific tasks based on perception in time and space domains of visual and auditory stimuli. BACKGROUND: Previous psychophysiological studies have investigated temporal and spatial characteristics of neural processing of sensory stimuli (mainly somatosensorial and visual), whereas the definition of such processing at higher cognitive level has not been sufficiently addressed. The impairment of time and space processing is likely driven by basal ganglia dysfunction. However, o

Rett syndrome: an eye-tracking study of attention and recognition memory.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine attention and recognition memory for faces and patterns in Rett syndrome, a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. METHOD: Because Rett syndrome impairs speech and hand use, precluding most neuropsychological testing, the visual paired-comparison paradigm (VPC) was used, together with eye tracking. In the VPC, two identical stimuli are presented for familiarization. On test, the familiar stimulus and a new one are paired, and recognition inferred from preferential looking to the novel target. Differentiation of Types of Visual Agnosia Using EEG.

Visual recognition deficits are the hallmark symptom of visual agnosia, a neuropsychological disorder typically associated with damage to the visual system. Most research into visual agnosia focuses on characterizing the deficits through detailed behavioral testing, and structural and functional brain scans are used to determine the spatial extent of any cortical damage. Although the hierarchical nature of the visual system leads to clear predictions about the temporal dynamics of cortical deficits, there has been little research on the use of neuroimaging methods with high temporal resolution

Identifying networks within an fMRI multivariate searchlight analysis.

There is great interest in understanding how different brain regions represent information across space and time. Information-based searchlight analyses systematically examine the information encoded within clusters of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) voxels across the brain. Significant searchlights contain information that can be used to decode conditions of interest, but significant discriminability can be achieved in a variety of ways. We report a new analysis method that can identify sub-networks of searchlights based on having similar temporal changes in information. We prese

The same, but different: Preserved distractor suppression in old age is implemented through an age-specific reactive ventral fronto-parietal network.

Previous studies have shown age-related impairments in the ability to suppress salient distractors. One possibility is that this is mediated by age-related impairments in the recruitment of the left intraparietal sulcus (Left IPS), which has been shown to mediate the suppression of salient distractors in healthy, young participants. Alternatively, this effect may be due to a shift in engagement from proactive control to reactive control, possibly to compensate for age-related impairments in proactive control. Another possibility is that this is due to changes in the functional specificity of b

Perceived match between own and observed models' bodies: influence of face, viewpoints, and body size.

People are generally unable to accurately determine their own body measurements and to translate this knowledge to identifying a model/avatar that best represents their own body. This inability has not only been related to health problems (e.g. anorexia nervosa), but has important practical implications as well (e.g. online retail). Here we aimed to investigate the influence of three basic visual features-face presence, amount of viewpoints, and observed model size-on the perceived match between own and observed models' bodies and on attitudes towards these models. Models were real-life models

Object parsing in the left lateral occipitotemporal cortex: Whole shape, part shape, and graspability.

Small and manipulable objects (tools) preferentially evoke a network of brain regions relative to other objects, including the lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC), which is assumed to process tool shape information. Given the correlation between various object properties, the exact type of information being represented in the LOTC remains debated. In three fMRI experiments, we examined the effects of multiple levels of shape (whole vs. object parts) and motor-related (grasping; manipulation) information. Combining representational similarity analysis and commonality analysis allowed us to p

Comparative Effects of High-Tech Visual Scene Displays and Low-Tech Isolated Picture Symbols on Engagement From Students With Multiple Disabilities.

Purpose Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an intervention approach that can promote communication and language in children with multiple disabilities who are beginning communicators. While a wide range of AAC technologies are available, little is known about the comparative effects of specific technology options. Given that engagement can be low for beginning communicators with multiple disabilities, the current study provides initial information about the comparative effects of 2 AAC technology options-high-tech visual scene displays (VSDs) and low-tech isolated picture symb

Disentangling the effects of reward value and probability on anticipatory event-related potentials.

Optimal decision-making requires humans to predict the value and probability of prospective (rewarding) outcomes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and dissociate the cortical mechanisms activated by information on an upcoming potentially rewarded target stimulus with varying probabilities. Electro-cortical activity was recorded during a cued Go/NoGo experiment, during which cue letters signaled upcoming target letters to which participants had to respond. The probability of target letter appearance after the cue letter and the amount of money that could be won for correct and fast

Morphometric correlates of anomia in patients with small left temporopolar lesions.

Visual object naming is a complex cognitive process that engages an interconnected network of cortical regions moving from occipitotemporal to anterior-inferior temporal cortices, and extending into the inferior frontal cortex. Naming can fail for diverse reasons, and different stages of the naming multi-step process appear to be reliant upon the integrity of different neuroanatomical locations. While the neural correlates of semantic errors have been extensively studied, the neural basis of omission errors remains relatively unspecified. Although a strong line of evidence supports an associat
