Activity of albendazole-ivermectin combination and other filaricidal drugs against infective larvae, preadult, microfilariae and adult worms of Molinema dessetae in the rodent Proechimys oris.

The efficacy of albendazole-ivermectin combination was tested an adult and developing stages of Molinema dessetae in the rodent Proechimys oris. Albendazole and ivermectin, both given alone, suramin and diethylcarbamazine were used as reference compounds. The drug combination (albendazole at 10 mg/kg/ day x 5 days and Ivermectin at 0.04 mg/kg/day x 5 days) was effective against infective larvae and preadult worms, and substantially reduced the number of live adult worms. The known filaricidal agents, diethylcarbamazine (400 mg/kg twice daily x 5 days), ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg/day x 5 days), and

Auditory brainstem of the ferret: early cessation of developmental sensitivity of neurons in the cochlear nucleus to removal of the cochlea.

The role of primary afferent innervation in the maintenance of neurons in the mammalian auditory system was assessed by performing unilateral removals of the cochlea in neonatal and mature ferrets of known birth dates. Removals were performed under steroid anesthesia and resulted in the complete destruction of the organ of Corti and the loss of at least 80% of type I spiral ganglion neurons. Four main age groups [postnatal days (P)5, P24, P90, and P180] were used. Additional animals received no surgery, partial removals, or complete removals at older ages. Three months after the cochlear remov

Bacteriological survey of leptospirosis in Zaria, Nigeria.

A total of 252 rodents were trapped in the environs of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, over a two-year period, of which 221 were brown field rats (Arvicanthus niloticus). Only these were found positive (4.5%). Titers were detected against Leptospira interrogans, serovars australis, icterohaemorrhagiae, tarassovi and hardjo. All positive sera except one reacted against a single serovar. Eight isolates were obtained from field rats: five were serovar australis, one ballum and two unidentified. Five isolates were recovered from 74 bovine kidneys examined: one was serovar pyrogenes and four uniden

Detection of new world hantaviruses by a broadly reactive rRT-PCR assay.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Orthohantaviruses are negative-sense RNA viruses that persistently infect rodents and can cause severe human disease. Orthohantavirus diversity complicates comprehensive surveillance strategies and diagnostic tools. Currently, serological assays and nested PCR with degenerate primers are used for hantavirus diagnosis and rodent surveillance, but these assays have long turnaround-times. Here, a broadly reactive Orthohantavirus real-time PCR assay is presented that can be incorporated into public health and research laboratories across the Americas. STUDY DESIGN: Star

Surveillance of Leishmania spp., Assessment in Sand Flies and Rodents, and Intervention Measures Using Drones During an Outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Southern Israel.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania major and Leishmania infantum infection were evaluated in sand flies and rodents during a cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) outbreak in two military camps in southern Israel (2022-2023). The efficacy of a novel intervention combining drone-based pesticide application and rodent bait stations was assessed. METHODS: Sand flies and rodents were sampled and tested for Leishmania by PCR and DNA sequencing. In April 2023, precision spreading of pesticides via drones and bait stations targeting Meriones tristrami and Mus musculus domesticus was done in camp 2, while camp 1 served a

Bayesian evaluation of phage therapy efficacy against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to examine the efficacy of bacteriophage therapy in combating Acinetobacter baumannii, a pathogen known for its multidrug resistance, through the application of Bayesian statistical models. The research focuses on measuring survival outcomes in preclinical animal models that have been treated with bacteriophages, highlighting the promise of Bayesian methods in tackling the uncertainties present in biological data. METHODOLOGY: We carried out a systematic review, focusing on identifying pertinent studies regarding phage therapy in animal models. Bayesian

Cryptosporidium spp. in wild rodents in the Poyang Lake region, China.

Cryptosporidium spp. are zoonotic protozoan parasites that cause diarrheal disease worldwide. Rodents can harbor diverse Cryptosporidium spp. and facilitate their transmission to the environment and other hosts, including humans. However, data on Cryptosporidium infection in wild rodents in the Poyang Lake region, China's largest freshwater lake, remain scarce. Here, we investigated Cryptosporidium spp. in 273 wild rodents collected from seven sites adjacent to villages around Poyang Lake between 2022 and 2024. The rodents were identified by cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequencing

Disruption of the thyroid hormone system and patterns of altered thyroid hormones after gestational chemical exposures in rodents - a systematic review.

We present a comprehensive overview of changes in thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) serum concentrations after pre-gestational, gestational and/or lactation exposures of rodents to various chemicals that affect the thyroid hormone system. We show that T4 and TSH changes consistent with the idealized view of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) feedback loop (T4 decrements accompanied by TSH increases) are observed with only a relatively small set of chemicals. Most substances affect concentrations of various thyroid hormones without increasing TSH. Studies of altered T4

Beneficial Effects of Capybara Oil Supplementation on Steatosis and Liver Apoptosis in Obese Mice.

Obesity is a complex chronic disease characterized by excess body fat (adipose) that is harmful to health and has been a major global health problem. It may be associated with several diseases, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are lipid mediators that have anti-inflammatory characteristics and can be found in animals and plants, with capybara oil (CO) being a promising source. So, we intend to evaluate the hepatic pathophysiological alterations in C57Bl/6 mice with NAFLD, caused by obesity, and the possible beneficial effects of OC in the tre

The prenatal use of agmatine prevents social behavior deficits in VPA-exposed mice by activating the ERK/CREB/BDNF signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: According to reports, prenatal exposure to valproic acid can induce autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-like symptoms in both humans and rodents. However, the exact cause and therapeutic method of ASD is not fully understood. Agmatine (AGM) is known for its neuroprotective effects, and this study aims to explore whether giving agmatine hydrochloride before birth can prevent autism-like behaviors in mouse offspring exposed prenatally to valproic acid. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the effects of AGM prenatally on valproate (VPA)-exposed mice. We established a mouse model of AS

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Rodent reproductive behavior among males and females after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

IN BRIEF: The rodent reproductive behavioral control column of the hypothalamus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are critical systems that regulate copulatory behaviors in both males and females. We review how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically phthalates, bisphenol A, and chemical mixtures, dysregulate appetitive and consummatory copulatory behaviors and their neuroendocrine substrates, using mouse and rodent models. ABSTRACT: Sexual reproduction - from both physiological and behavioral perspectives - is dependent upon appropriate connections between a diver
