The Experience of Insomnia in Patients With Schizophrenic Disorder: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a health problem that particularly affects people with schizophrenia. Its repercussions go beyond the disorder itself and affect many areas of life. The aim of the present study is to explore the clinical symptoms and consequences of insomnia in patients diagnosed with schizophrenic disorder and the perceptions of these patients regarding the care they receive. METHODS: The study takes a qualitative approach and uses semi-structured interviews to conduct a descriptive and interpretive analysis of 3 clinically different clusters of patients. These 3 clusters have been d

A high-density EEG investigation into the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying differences between personality profiles in social information processing.

This study investigated whether differences between personality styles in the processing of social stimuli reflect variability in underlying general-purpose or social-specific neurocognitive mechanisms. Sixty-five individuals classified previously into two distinct personality profiles underwent high-density electroencephalography whilst performing tasks that tap into both aspects of cognitive processing - namely, two distinct facets of general-purpose response inhibition (interference resolution and action withholding) during social information processing. To determine the stage of processing

Reintroducing Rationalization: A Study of Relational Goal Pursuit Theory of Intimate Partner Obsessive Relational Intrusion.

Obsessive relational intrusions (ORI) are the repeated and unwanted attempts by one person to initiate or maintain an intimate relationship with a specific, targeted, and unwilling other. To date, ORI has been commonly explained by relational goal pursuit (RGP) theory. Centrally, RGP theory posits that five clusters of goal-related cognitions and emotions explain ORI. These are goal-linking, self-efficacy, rumination, affective flooding, and rationalization. However, while the first four factors have been empirically investigated as predictors of ORI, rationalization has not. Thus, the current

The Pain Catastrophizing Scale-short form: psychometric properties and threshold for identifying high-risk individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) measures three aspects of catastrophic cognitions about pain-rumination, magnification, and helplessness. To facilitate assessment and clinical application, we aimed to (a) develop a short version on the basis of its factorial structure and the items' correlations with key pain-related outcomes, and (b) identify the threshold on the short form indicative of risk for depression. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Social centers for older people. PARTICIPANTS: 664 Chinese older adults with chronic pain. MEASUREMENTS: Besides the PCS, pain

Instability of default mode network connectivity in major depression: a two-sample confirmation study.

Major depression is associated with altered static functional connectivity in various brain networks, particularly the default mode network (DMN). Dynamic functional connectivity is a novel tool with little application in affective disorders to date, and holds the potential to unravel fluctuations in connectivity strength over time in major depression. We assessed stability of connectivity in major depression between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), key nodes in the DMN that are implicated in ruminative cognitions. Functional connectivity stability betw

Promoting resiliency among palliative care clinicians: stressors, coping strategies, and training needs.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care clinicians (PCCs) are susceptible to burnout, as they regularly witness immense patient and family suffering; however, little is known about their specific challenges and training needs to enhance their long-term sustainability. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore common stressors, coping strategies, and training needs among PCCs in efforts to inform the development of a targeted Resiliency Program. METHODS: Utilizing a semistructured interview guide, we conducted a series of in-depth interviews with 15 PCCs at the Massachusetts General

MYmind: Mindfulness training for Youngsters with autism spectrum disorders and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Despite the dramatic increase in autism spectrum disorder in youth and the extremely high costs, hardly any evidence-based interventions are available. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of mindfulness training for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, combined with Mindful Parenting training. METHOD: A total of 23 adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, referred to a mental health clinic, received nine weekly sessions of mindfulness training in group format. Their parents (18 mothers, 11 fathers) participated in parallel Mindful Parenting training. A pre-test

Intrusive memories and depression following recent non-traumatic negative life events in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Research in adults suggests that intrusive memories are not just found in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet there is little evidence concerning the phenomenology of intrusive memories in children and adolescents. The present study investigated the frequency of intrusive memories following a recent negative event in an adolescent school sample, and considered the application of cognitive theory to understanding the maintenance of intrusive memories of recent negative events, and their role in maintaining depression. METHODS: High school students (aged 11-1

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviours in pervasive developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and stereotyped behaviours are a heterogeneous group of behaviours present in many neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite their core significance in PDD, it is not clear whether there are distinct groups of these behaviours with different specificity to autism. METHODS: A two-factor model of the repetitive behaviours, namely sensory/motor (lower-order) and cognitive rigidity (higher-order), was conceptualised. The model's goodness of fit to the data was examined in a clinic population of children with PDD, with and without mental retardation, and of those with only mental

Intrusive Cognitive Content and Postdeployment Distress.

Although intrusive cognitions (ICs) are common posttrauma, little is known about trauma-related IC content, or associations between IC content and posttraumatic adjustment. A mixed-method cross-sectional approach was used in a secondary analysis of IC content and postdeployment distress. Participants were 1,521 U.S. Army soldiers 3-12 months postdeployment reporting their most distressing postdeployment ICs (mean number of ICs reported was 1.20). ICs were transcribed and content was categorized by 13 emergent themes. The most commonly reported ICs were of injury or death (48.2%) and combat (43

Dietetic-Led Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: Feasibility, Acceptability, and Proof-of-Concept.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (CBT-AR) is an emerging treatment for ARFID, but to date, it has only been delivered by mental health clinicians. Given the relevance of nutrition to treatment goals, we adapted the treatment to be dietetic-led (D-CBT-AR). METHOD: We conducted a pilot trial of D-CBT-AR. Participants self-referred to a multidisciplinary eating-disorder clinic in Brisbane, Australia, and attended in person or virtually. Participants rated D-CBT-AR on acceptability and feasibility. We also measured changes in ARFID psychopathol

Twice Exceptional in Medicine: A Case Series of Neurodivergent Physicians.

The term twice-exceptional (2e) describes individuals who combine high intellectual potential with neurodevelopmental or psychiatric conditions that may impair performance in traditional environments. While this concept has been increasingly recognized in education, its relevance to medical training and practice has received little attention. This case series presents five physicians across different stages of training who exemplify twice-exceptionality, highlighting both their cognitive strengths and the barriers they faced in clinical environments. The first case involves a surgical resident

Pain Catastrophizing in Orthopedic Surgery: A Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Trends, Collaborative Networks, and Clinical Implications (2001-2026).

IMPORTANCE: Pain catastrophizing is a pain-related cognitive construct involving persistent rumination about pain, magnification of pain threat, and feelings of helplessness. In musculoskeletal and perioperative contexts, higher catastrophizing is associated with greater pain intensity, disability, distress, delayed recovery, opioid use, and healthcare utilization. Within orthopedic populations, preoperative psychological status is increasingly recognized as relevant to postoperative pain and patient-reported outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To analyze worldwide research patterns on pain catastrophizing

Emotional Vulnerability in Adolescents (EVA) Longitudinal Study: Identifying individual differences in symptoms of adolescent depression and anxiety and their biopsychosocial mechanisms based on demographic and mental health characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression and anxiety are highly prevalent, recurrent, and disabling mental health conditions. Current treatment outcomes are suboptimal, often leaving young people with residual symptoms and high relapse rates. To inform future development of more effective preventative strategies, the Emotional Vulnerability in Adolescents (EVA) study aimed to identify vulnerability markers for adolescent depression and anxiety. Specifically, it examined the associations between mental health outcomes and potentially modifiable biopsychosocial factors. The present report provides an o

Network dynamics between digital media use and depressive symptomatology: A computational phenotyping approach using ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive investigation into relationships between digital media use and psychological well-being, understanding of specific temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remains inadequate. METHODS: This study employed intensive longitudinal methods to examine the complex network relationships between digital behavior patterns and depressive symptoms. We collected ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data from 1642 young adults (ages 18-29, 58.2 % female, 42.3 % currently enrolled in undergraduate programs) across 60 days, yielding 358,962 observations capturing smartphone

Predictors of stress resilience in Parkinson's disease and associations with symptom progression.

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) are sensitive to effects of long-term stress, but might differ in stress resilience, i.e. the ability to maintain mental health despite adversity. It is unclear whether stress resilience in PD is predominantly determined by dopamine deficiency, psychosocial factors, or both. In PD animal models, chronic stressors accelerate disease progression, but evidence in humans is lacking. Our objectives were to (1) distinguish stressor-reactive from resilient PD patients, (2) identify resilience factors, and (3) compare symptom progression between stressor-reactive a

Effect of blended and unguided online delivery of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy versus care as usual on distress among cancer patients and survivors: protocol for the three-arm parallel randomized controlled buddy trial.

BACKGROUND: One third of cancer patients and survivors experience psychological distress. Previous studies have shown that online mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (eMBCT) supports cancer patients and survivors in managing distress. Lack of peer support and asynchronicity during online interventions have been reported as barriers for treatment adherence and can result in higher drop-out rates. Considering this, two new formats of eMBCT were created. The primary objective of the Buddy trial is to evaluate the (cost) effectiveness of blended and unguided eMBCT versus care as usual (CAU) on psy

Heart rate variability may index emotion dysregulation in alcohol-related intimate partner violence.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence is a serious public health problem that costs the United States more than $4.1 billion in direct medical and mental health costs alone. Furthermore, alcohol use contributes to more frequent and more severe intimate partner violence incidents. Compounding this problem is treatments for intimate partner violence have largely been socially informed and demonstrate poor efficacy. We argue that improvements in intimate partner treatment will be gained through systematic scientific study of mechanisms through which alcohol is related to intimate partner violen
