Acquisition of different isolates of Anaplasma phagocytophilum by Ixodes scapularis from a model animal.

The prevalence of etiologic agents in ticks reflects the intensity of their transmission in natural cycles and is an important measure of their potential to cause human disease. The distribution of Anaplasma phagocytophilum within the range of its primary vectors is patchy. Even nearby sites differ dramatically in the prevalence of Anaplasma in questing ticks. We hypothesized that this irregular distribution may be due in part to variations in acquisition rates of different isolates of A. phagocytophilum by I. scapularis ticks from infected animals. BALB/c mice were infected with seven isolate

Passive tick surveillance, dog seropositivity, and incidence of human lyme disease.

Data on nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks submitted by the public to the University of Rhode Island Tick Research Laboratory for testing from 1991 to 2000 were compared with human case data from the Rhode Island Department of Health to determine the efficacy of passive tick surveillance at assessing human risk of Lyme disease. Numbers of ticks submitted were highly correlated with human cases by county (r = 0.998, n = 5 counties) and by town (r = 0.916, n = 37 towns), as were the numbers of positive ticks submitted (r = 0.989 by county, r = 0.787 by town). Human cases were correlated with ticks

Molecular Prevalence and Risk Factor Assessment of Theileria Spp. in Small Ruminants of Sistan, Southeast of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Theileriosis is a tropical and sub-tropical disease that causes economic losses in livestock. Theileriosis in small ruminants, manifests through a range of clinical signs, including fever, mucoid nasal secretions, anemia, jaundice, lacrimation, enlarged superficial lymph nodes, anorexia, and accelerated weight reduction. In this study, the prevalence of Theileria spp. was determined in asymptomatic small ruminants of the Sistan region located in the southeast of Iran. METHODS: The collected samples of apparently healthy sheep (n=48) and goats (n=52), obtained between February 2023

Individual activity of forest rodents correlates to pathogen communities.

Animal personality influences organismal interactions and individual habitat use. Rodents are zoonoses reservoirs and often exposed to several pathogens simultaneously, potentially resulting in interdependence of infections and susceptibility to infection. Still, entire pathogen communities are rarely investigated, even though, given rodents ubiquity in human settlements, understanding the link between animal personality and pathogenesis is an important public health issue. We investigated the association of animal personality with pathogen communities in wild rodents, analysing ectoparasite o

Pharmacological studies and pharmacokinetic modelling to support the development of interventions targeting ecological reservoirs of Lyme disease.

The development of interventions targeting reservoirs of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto with acaricide to reduce the density of infected ticks faces numerous challenges imposed by ecological and operational limits. In this study, the pharmacokinetics, efficacy and toxicology of fluralaner were investigated in Mus musculus and Peromyscus leucopus mice, the main reservoir of B. burgdorferi in North America. Fluralaner showed rapid distribution and elimination, leading to fast plasma concentration (Cp) depletion in the first hours after administration followed by a slow elimination rate for s

Species diversity of dermal microfilariae of the genus Cercopithifilaria infesting dogs in the Mediterranean region.

Following the recent description of microfilariae of a Cercopithifilaria sp. in a dog from Sicily, Italy, (herein after referred to as Cercopithifilaria sp. I), numerous skin samples were collected from dogs in the Mediterranean region. In addition to Cercopithifilaria sp. I (185·7 ± 7·2 μm long), microfilariae of 2 other species were identified, namely Cercopithifilaria grassii (651·7 ± 23·6 μm long) and a yet undescribed microfilaria, Cercopithifilaria sp. II (264·4 ± 20·2 μm long, with evident lateral alae). The morphological differentiation among the 3 species of dermal microfilariae was c

Identification of a new Borrelia species among small mammals in areas of northern Spain where Lyme disease is endemic.

The role of small mammals as reservoir hosts for Borrelia burgdorferi was investigated in several areas where Lyme disease is endemic in northern Spain. A low rate of infestation by Ixodes ricinus nymphs was found in the small mammal populations studied that correlated with the near-absence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in 184 animals tested and with the lack of transmission of B. burgdorferi sensu lato to I. ricinus larvae that fed on them. In contrast, questing ticks collected at the same time and in the same areas were found to carry a highly variable B. burgdorferi sensu lato repertoire (B.

Impact assessment of a community-based animal health project in Dollo Ado and Dollo Bay districts, southern Ethiopia.

Participatory methods were used to assess the impact of a community-based animal health worker (CAHW) project in two remote pastoralist districts of Ethiopia. The CAHW project had been operating for 3 years at the time of the assessment. Participatory methods were standardized and repeated with 10 groups of informants in the project area. The assessment showed significant reductions in disease impact for diseases handled by CAHWs compared with diseases not handled by CAHWs. In camels, there was significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the impact of mange, trypanosomosis, helminthosis, anthrax and

Analysis of stage-specific and shared antigens derived from Rhipicephalus sanguineus by electrophoresis and western blotting.

We carried out an SDS-PAGE analysis of antigens of Rhipicephalus sanguineus using extracts of eggs (EE), larvae (LE), nymphs (NE), male salivary glands (MSGE), male midguts (MME), female salivary glands (FSGE) and female midguts (FME). Under non-reducing conditions a common band of about 205 kDa was observed. EE, LE and NE extracts showed groups of bands between 150 and 75 kDa. A protein pattern was observed in FSGE extract with a group of bands between 75 and 50 kDa and four bands between 15 and 6.5 kDa. In this case an apparently exclusive band of molecular weight about 25 kDa was observed.

Golden jackals (Canis aureus) as hosts for ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Serbia.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid species native to Europe. This species is characterized by rapid large-scale expansion. A similar trend is also observed in Serbia, where the species is now distributed in more than a half of the territory. Although jackals prefer habitats in human-dominated landscapes, these animals have not been studied well enough from an eco-epidemiological point of view, and little is known about their potential for carrying zoonotic pathogens. In a study conducted during a three-year period (01/2010-02/2013), a total of 216 hunted or road-killed go

Rickettsia felis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus from two distant Chilean cities.

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsia felis is an emerging agent considered a human threat; although its natural reservoir and agent of transmission is the cat flea, it has been also found in other vectors. R. felis has been identified in Chile in cat fleas and in one specimen of Rhipicephalus sanguineus collected in the Metropolitan Region. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of Rickettsia spp. in R. sanguineus from dogs of two different and distant geographical areas in Chile. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a domiciliary sampling in urban and rural localities of two distant areas

Experience of Lyme disease and preferences for precautions: a cross-sectional survey of UK patients.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is a tick-borne zoonosis currently affecting approximately 1000 people annually in the UK (confirmed through serological diagnosis) although it is estimated that the real figures may be as high as 3000 cases. It is important to know what factors may predict correct appraisal of LD symptoms and how the experience of LD might predict preferences for future precautionary actions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with early LD patients via the Lyme Borreliosis Unit at the Health Protection Agency. One hundred and thirty participants completed measures

Diversity of Babesia and Rickettsia species in questing Ixodes ricinus: a longitudinal study in urban, pasture, and natural habitats.

In a previous study, our group investigated the Babesia spp. prevalence in questing Ixodes ricinus ticks from nine city parks in South Germany in the years 2009 and 2010. We showed predominant prevalence of B. venatorum (in previous literature also known as Babesia sp. EU1), especially in those parks in a more natural condition and with occurrence of large wild animals, such as roe deer. To obtain longitudinal data and to broaden the knowledge about this pathogen, further investigations were carried out in 2011 and 2012 in four of those city parks. Two additional habitat types were chosen for

Movement patterns of nilgai antelope in South Texas: Implications for cattle fever tick management.

Wildlife, both native and introduced, can harbor and spread diseases of importance to the livestock industry. Describing movement patterns of such wildlife is essential to formulate effective disease management strategies. Nilgai antelope (Boselaphus tragocamelus) are a free-ranging, introduced ungulate in southern Texas known to carry cattle fever ticks (CFT, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, R. (B.) annulatus). CFT are the vector for the etiological agent of bovine babesiosis, a lethal disease causing high mortality in susceptible Bos taurus populations and severely affecting the beef cat

Detection and identification of blood-borne infections in dogs in Nigeria using light microscopy and the polymerase chain reaction.

Many sick dogs brought to the University of Ibadan Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UIVTH) are infested with ticks and are anemic. Up until recently, light microscopy (LM) has been the only available means used for detection of blood-borne infections. In other parts of the world, PCR-based assays been used as a gold standard for accurate diagnosis of blood-borne infections. In this study, we used LM and broad-spectrum rRNA gene PCR-based assays on 116 blood samples from dogs brought to the UIVTH for detection of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia and the 16S rRNA genes of Ehrlichia and hemotropic mycop

PARASITOLOGY AND SEROLOGY OF FREE-RANGING COYOTES (CANIS LATRANS) IN NORTH CAROLINA, USA.

Coyotes (Canis latrans) have expanded recently into the eastern US and can serve as a source of pathogens to domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), livestock, and humans. We examined free-ranging coyotes from central North Carolina, US, for selected parasites and prevalence of antibodies against viral and bacterial agents. We detected ticks on most (81%) coyotes, with Amblyomma americanum detected on 83% of those with ticks. Fifteen (47%) coyotes were positive for heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis), with a greater detection rate in adults (75%) than juveniles (22%). Serology revealed antibodies

Immunoproteomic identification of antigenic salivary biomarkers detected by Ixodes ricinus-exposed rabbit sera.

Ixodes ricinus, the primary vector of tick-borne disease in Europe, is currently expanding its distribution area and its activity in many countries. Antibody responses to tick salivary antigens have been proposed as an alternative marker of exposure to tick bites. However, the identification of the I. ricinus corresponding antigens remains elusive. Using rabbits artificially exposed to I. ricinus and 2 other European tick species (Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor reticulatus) as controls, a cross-comparison of IgG profiles was performed against protein salivary gland extracts (pSGE) fr
