Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Panic Disorder Severity Scale.

The Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) is a well-established measure of panic symptoms but few data exist on this instrument in non north-American samples. Our main goal was to assess the psychometric properties (internal consistency, test re-test reliability, inter-rater reliability, convergent and divergent validity) and the factor structure of the Spanish version. Ninety-four patients with a main diagnosis of panic disorder were assessed with the Spanish version of PDSS, the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3), the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the B…

Anxiety symptoms associated with non-medical use (panic symptoms) and abuse/dependence (agoraphobia) should alert clinicians to screen for these problems and consider alternate treatment or referral.

Plasma alprazolam concentrations. Relation to efficacy and side effects in the treatment of panic disorder.

A series of 237 patients with DSM-III-diagnosed panic disorder, or agoraphobia with panic attacks, received alprazolam as part of the placebo-controlled Cross-National Collaborative Panic Study. After a 1-week drug-free period, alprazolam dosage was titrated upward with the objective of reaching 6.0 mg/d in all patients. At week 3 of treatment, alprazolam plasma levels were significantly correlated with daily dosage (regression slope: 11.7 ng/mL per milligram per day) but with considerable individual variation. Among patients with spontaneous panic attacks, 70% of those with plasma alprazolam …

Who is stressed? A pilot study of salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase concentrations in agoraphobic patients and their novice therapists undergoing in vivo exposure.

In cognitive behavioural therapy of phobic anxiety, in vivo exposure is considered as an effective treatment strategy. Apparently, it involves the experience of stress and anxiety in patients. Given the therapist's role during exposure sessions, it is conceivable that the performance is also accompanied with the experience of stress in therapists, especially when unversed in conducting psychotherapy. Studies confirmed that cognitive behavioural therapists tend to avoid therapist-guided in vivo exposure. The objective of this study was the simultaneous investigation of therapist's and patient's

Examining the nature of fear of flying.

BACKGROUND: The nature of fear of flying (FOF) is not well understood. It is commonly assumed to be a fear learned from flight-specific experiences. However, existing literature suggests that FOF is a manifestation of fears of other stimuli (e.g., heights) embedded in the flying situation, but not specific to it. This study compared the level of prediction of FOF attained from flight-specific conditioning experiences (specifically, classical conditioning experiences in direct, observational, and verbal modes) with the level of prediction attained from flight-embedded fears. METHODS: There wer

Panic patients reveal idiographic associations between anxiety symptoms and catastrophes in a semantic priming task.

In the present study, a modified semantic priming paradigm was used to test whether panic patients more strongly associate catastrophes with anxiety symptoms than nonclinical subjects. Subjects named catastrophic target words (e.g. infarction) and target words neutral to anxiety themes (e.g. weekend) that followed auditive prime sentences immediately (i.e.0ms) or with a delay (i.e. 1500ms). Prime sentences described the perception of anxiety symptoms (e.g. You feel tense) or sensations neutral to anxiety (You feel relaxed). Consistent with an earlier study [Schniering C.A., & Rapee, R.M. (1997

Diathesis stress model for panic-related distress: a test in a Russian epidemiological sample.

To investigate a cognitive diathesis-stress model, the present study evaluated the main and interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity (AS) and exposure to aversive conditions (past month) in predicting theoretically relevant panic vulnerability variables in an epidemiologically defined sample from Russia (N = 390). Consistent with expectation, findings suggested that the combination of high levels of exposure to aversive conditions and high AS physical concerns predicted panic attacks (past week) and agoraphobic avoidance above and beyond the variance accounted for by negative affect. These f

Cross-cultural validity of the structured clinical interview for panic-agoraphobic spectrum.

BACKGROUND: We sought to develop a series of assessment measures of psychiatric spectrum conditions associated with major DSM-IV mood and anxiety disorders that might capture the true phenotypes underlying these disorders. The specific objective of this report was to describe the methods we employed to create instruments that could cross linguistic and national boundaries and to evaluate the comparability of results obtained when one of these instruments, the Structured Clinical Interview for Panic-Agoraphobic Spectrum (SCI-PAS), was administered in the United States and in Italy. The 35% CO2 hyperreactivity and clinical symptomatology in patients with panic disorder after 1 week of treatment with citalopram: an open study.

The effect of a short treatment (7 days) with citalopram on the reactivity to inhalations of 35% CO2 and 65% oxygen and on clinical symptomatology was investigated in 15 patients with panic disorder who had a positive response to 35% CO2 inhalation. An open study design was applied. On day 0, before starting drug treatment, and after 1 week of treatment, each patient underwent the 35% CO2 challenge, and clinical symptomatology was evaluated with psychometric scales. The results showed a significant reduction of CO2 reactivity and of scores on the anticipatory anxiety subscale of Panic Associat

Adults who feared school: is early separation anxiety specific to the pathogenesis of panic disorder?

Although juvenile separation anxiety disorder is maintained to be a predisposing factor to adult panic disorder in DSM-III-R, past research has failed to clarify (a) whether it is separation anxiety per se or school refusal that is the pathogenic risk factor and (b) whether affected youngsters are specifically at risk of developing panic disorder rather than symptoms of general anxiety or phobias in later life. The present study of 74 adults who responded to media publicity found that a measure of early separation anxiety but not a history of school refusal was associated with risk of adult pa

Patterns of abnormal processing of emotional information in panic disorder and major depression.

Studies showing interference with color naming threat-related words in patients with anxiety disorders suggest a bias towards processing threatening material in these patients. We assessed the specificity of this finding to anxiety disorders and to threatening stimuli by administering Stroop cards with a variety of types of emotional stimuli to 24 panic disorder patients with no history of major depression, 30 patients with major depression and no history of panic attacks and 25 controls with no history of an axis I disorder. Our findings suggest that the abnormal information processing seen i
