[Prognostic factors for neonatal mortality at the Souro Sanou University Hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso: a cross-sectional study].

INTRODUCTION: to help reduce neonatal mortality in Burkina Faso, we identified the prognostic factors for neonatal mortality at the Sourô Sanou University Hospital. METHODS: we conducted a cross-sectional and analytical study in the neonatal department from July 25, 2019 to June 25, 2020. Patients' medical records, consultation and hospital records were reviewed. Prognostic factors for neonatal mortality were identified using a Cox model. RESULTS: data from 1128 newborn babies were analysed. Neonatal mortality was 29.8%. Most of these deaths (89%) occurred in the early neonatal period. The m

Impact of a neuro-intensive care service for newborns.

BACKGROUND: Advances in treating the injured neonatal brain have given rise to neuro-intensive care services for newborns. This study assessed the impact of one such service in a cohort of newborns treated with therapeutic hypothermia. METHODS: Our newborn neuro-intensive care service was started in November 2012. From January 2008 to October 2016, a cohort of 158 newborns was treated with therapeutic hypothermia, 29 before and 129 after the inception of the service. This study compared the outcomes of newborns treated by the service with those of newborns treated before. Multivariate regress

Sex differences in somatic and sensory motor development after neonatal anoxia in Wistar rats.

Currently, one of the important causes of brain injury in new-borns is the neonatal anoxia which impacts the perinatology services worldwide. Animal models of anoxia have been used to assess its effects at cellular and behavioural levels in all ages, but few studies focus on sex differences. This study aimed to investigate some physical parameters of development, sensorimotor alterations, early neurological reflexes as well as the density of cells in motor and sensorimotor cerebral cortex of adolescent rats submitted to neonatal anoxia. The results presented significant differences in most of

Physiologically based cord clamping stabilises cardiac output and reduces cerebrovascular injury in asphyxiated near-term lambs.

BACKGROUND: Physiologically based cord clamping (PBCC) has advantages over immediate cord clamping (ICC) during preterm delivery, but its efficacy in asphyxiated infants is not known. We investigated the physiology of PBCC following perinatal asphyxia in near-term lambs. METHODS: Near-term sheep fetuses (139±2 (SD) days' gestation) were instrumented to measure umbilical, carotid, pulmonary and femoral arterial flows and pressures. Systemic and cerebral oxygenation was recorded using pulse oximetry and near-infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Fetal asphyxia was induced until mean blood pressu

Secretoneurin Serum Levels in Healthy Term Neonates and Neonates with Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy is a major cause of neurologic impairment and mortality in neonates. Early knowledge of brain injury is important to guide therapeutic decisions and reliably inform the parents. Increased secretoneurin levels have been detected in adult patients suffering from brain injury and it has also been shown to be a promising early serum biomarker of unfavourable neurological outcome. However, no data are available in neonates. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to obtain reference values for secretoneurin in healthy term neonates and then to assess the p

Thioredoxin 1 and glutaredoxin 2 contribute to maintain the phenotype and integrity of neurons following perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Thioredoxin (Trx) family proteins are crucial mediators of cell functions via regulation of the thiol redox state of various key proteins and the levels of the intracellular second messenger hydrogen peroxide. Their expression, localization and functions are altered in various pathologies. Here, we have analyzed the impact of Trx family proteins in neuronal development and recovery, following hypoxia/ischemia and reperfusion. METHODS: We have analyzed the regulation and potential functions of Trx family proteins during hypoxia/ischemia and reoxygenation of the developing brain in

Xenon ventilation during therapeutic hypothermia in neonatal encephalopathy: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Therapeutic hypothermia has become standard of care in newborns with moderate and severe neonatal encephalopathy; however, additional interventions are needed. In experimental models, breathing xenon gas during cooling offers long-term additive neuroprotection. This is the first xenon feasibility study in cooled infants. Xenon is expensive, requiring a closed-circuit delivery system. METHODS: Cooled newborns with neonatal encephalopathy were eligible for this single-arm, dose-escalation study if clinically stable, under 18 hours of age and requiring less than 35% ox

Moderate and severe perinatal asphyxia induces differential effects on cocaine sensitization in adult rats.

Perinatal asphyxia (PA) increases the likelihood of suffering from dopamine-related disorders, such as ADHD and schizophrenia. Since dopaminergic transmission plays a major role in cocaine sensitization, the purpose of this study was to determine whether PA could be associated with altered behavioral sensitization to cocaine. To this end, adult rats born vaginally (CTL), by caesarean section (C+), or by C+ with 15 min (PA15, moderate PA) or 19 min (PA19, severe PA) of global anoxia were repeatedly administered with cocaine (i.p., 15 mg/kg) and then challenged with cocaine (i.p., 15 mg/kg) afte

Nucleated red blood cell counts: an early predictor of brain injury and 2-year outcome in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in the era of cooling-based treatment.

BACKGROUND: Raised nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) counts in neonates may indicate in utero hypoxia and brain damage. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to examine the use of NRBC counts as a predictor of brain injury and neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated under current cooling-based strategy. METHODS: Forty-three neonates with asphyxia between 2004 and 2010 were retrospectively investigated. Twenty neonates with moderate/severe HIE underwent hypothermia (HT), and 23 with mild HIE were treated in normothermia (NT). Neonates were divided into gr

Erythrocytosis and severe asphyxia: two different causes of neonatal myocardial infarction.

Neonatal acute myocardial infarction is a rare event that carries a high mortality rate. We describe the cases of two newborns who survived acute myocardial infarction and discuss the management. The first neonate was born with severe asphyxia and left ventricular myocardial infarction with ventricular tachycardia. In this patient, systemic flow was maintained by right-to-left shunting through the patent ductus arteriosus. The second neonate presented with a haematocrit of 80% and an inferolateral myocardial infarction. Intensive treatment of low cardiac output syndrome led to survival of both

Melatonin augments hypothermic neuroprotection in a perinatal asphyxia model.

Despite treatment with therapeutic hypothermia, almost 50% of infants with neonatal encephalopathy still have adverse outcomes. Additional treatments are required to maximize neuroprotection. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone involved in physiological processes that also has neuroprotective actions against hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury in animal models. The objective of this study was to assess neuroprotective effects of combining melatonin with therapeutic hypothermia after transient hypoxia-ischaemia in a piglet model of perinatal asphyxia using clinically relevant magnetic resonan
