We performed atrial EP studies (atrial substrate evaluation) on 10 patients. These patients had evidence of paroxysmal, sustained, recurrent atrial arrhythmias (7 men and 3 women with a mean age of 64 +/- 15 years). All patients combined a brady-tachy syndrome; 7 patients had a sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and 3 patients a typical vagally induced atrial arrhythmia. Standard autopsy specimens from 49 infants and children, most with congenital heart disease, were prepared by controlled pressure coronary artery perfusion fixation of the heart. Autopsy measurements of tricuspid (TV) and pulmonary valve (PV) circumferences (Circ), right ventricular (RV) outflow circumference, (Circ), RV inflow and outflow tract lengths, and RV volume (Vol) were correlated with corresponding in vivo end-diastolic (D) and end-systolic (S) measurements from biplane cineangiograms (angio) in the same patients. Four hundred fifty-two patients with chronic bifascicular block and initially intact atrioventricular (AV) conduction were detected, studied, and prospectively followed between January 1970 and March 1978. There were 360 males and 92 females, ages 18--93 years (mean +/- SD, 62 +/- 15 years). Follow-up ranged from 29-2804 days (mean 1066 +/- 97 days). To evaluate the refractory periods of the atrioventricular (A-V) conducting system in patients with a short P-R interval and normal QRS complex, 57 patients with a P-R interval of 110 to 280 msec were studied with His bundle recording and premature atrial stimulation at similar cycle lengths of 660 to 720 msec. Forty years ago, we started our quest for 'The Holy Grail' of understanding ventricular rate control and rhythm in atrial fibrillation (AF). AV conduction abnormalities are observed in 15-30% of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy but are usually not severe enough to require permanent pacemaker implant. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and etiology of sudden cardiac arrest and death (SCA/D) in US high school athletes.

AIMS: Cryothermal energy balloon ablation (CBA), using cryogenic ablative energy, has proven very effective in producing pulmonary vein (PV) isolation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). UNLABELLED: The goal of the report was to evaluate changes of atrioventricular conduction in patients with sick sinus syndrome treated with permanent atrial pacing.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 150 patients (82 women and 68 men) with implanted permanent atrial AAI and AAIR pacemakers were followed for 5.9 +/- 3.6 years (maximum 15 yrs). After mean 5.9 years of follow up incidence of III degrees AVB was 0.7%, II degrees AVB--2.7%, and I degree AVB--2.74%; twenty six of 150 patients showed nonphysiological increase of the SQ interval at pacing rate 120 imp/min.
