Heart rate variability: Can it serve as a marker of mental health resilience?: Special Section on "Translational and Neuroscience Studies in Affective Disorders" Section Editor, Maria Nobile MD, PhD.

BACKGROUND: Stress resilience influences mental well-being and vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Usually, measurement of resilience is based on subjective reports, susceptible to biases. It justifies the need for objective biological/physiological biomarkers of resilience. One promising candidate as biomarker of mental health resilience (MHR) is heart rate variability (HRV). The evidence for its use was reviewed in this study. METHODS: We focused on the relationship between HRV (as measured through decomposition of RR intervals from electrocardiogram) and responses to laboratory stresso

Behind the Scenes of Developmental Language Disorder: Time to Call Neuropsychology Back on Stage.

Although the Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), also known as Specific Language Impairment in children has been the focus of unceasing scientific attention for decades, the nature and mechanisms of this disorder remain unclear. Most importantly, we still cannot reliably identify children requiring urgent intervention among other 'late talkers' at an early age and understand the high prevalence of comorbidity with psychiatric phenomena such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. One of the main reasons for this is the traditional 'diagnosis-by-exclusion,' resulting in heterogeneity of the DLD populat

Psychological functioning in Parkinson's disease post-deep brain stimulation: Self-regulation and executive functioning.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder involving the basal ganglia, resulting in motor and extra-motor deficits. These extra-motor deficits may be reflective of a self-regulatory deficit impacting patients' ability to regulate cognitive processes, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. There is a need to further examine the prevalence and range of self-regulation (SR) and executive functioning (EF) impairments in PD. This study sought to do so in a sample of patients with PD (N = 31) who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for motor symptom treatment. Patients complete

Large-scale brain network abnormalities in Huntington's disease revealed by structural covariance.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that can be diagnosed with certainty decades before symptom onset. Studies using structural MRI have identified grey matter (GM) loss predominantly in the striatum, but also involving various cortical areas. So far, voxel-based morphometric studies have examined each brain region in isolation and are thus unable to assess the changes in the interrelation of brain regions. Here, we examined the structural covariance in GM volumes in pre-specified motor, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and social-affective networks in 9…

Executive functions in anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The pathophysiologic mechanisms that account for the development and persistence of anorexia nervosa (AN) remain unclear. With respect to the neuropsychological functioning, the executive functions have been reported to be altered, especially cognitive flexibility and decision-making processes. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to review the current state of the neuropsychological studies focused on anorexia nervosa, especially those highlighting the executive functions. METHODS: This was done by means of a searching process covering three relevant electronic databases, as …

Internet-delivered acceptance and values-based exposure treatment for fibromyalgia: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a promising treatment option for fibromyalgia (FM). Studies have shown that many cognitive behavioral protocols can be transferred to the Internet with sustained efficacy. However, no study has investigated the effect on an Internet-delivered ACT-based protocol for FM. This study evaluated the efficacy, acceptability, and the health economic effects of an Internet-delivered acceptance and values-based exposure treatment for FM. METHODS: This open pilot trial included 41 self-referred women with a FM diagnosis. The 10-week Internet-deliver

Coupling of fingertip somatosensory information to head and body sway.

Light touch contact of a fingertip with a stationary surface can provide orientation information that enhances control of upright stance. Slight changes in contact force at the fingertip provide sensory cues about the direction of body sway, allowing attenuation of sway. In the present study, we asked to which extent somatosensory cues are part of the postural control system, that is, which sensory signal supports this coupling? We investigated postural control not only when the contact surface was stationary, but also when it was moving rhythmically (from 0.1 to 0.5 Hz). In doing so, we broug

Promoting Well-being in Pharmacy Faculty or Staff with Caregiver Roles.

There is limited literature addressing work-life challenges caregivers face while working in pharmacy academia. Identifying these challenges and solutions can help increase their well-being and retention. Caregiving responsibilities vary from short-term support required during an acute illness or following an accident, to long-term care for an individual that can extend over months to years, such as aging parents, partners, family members, or children with chronic illnesses, conditions, or diseases. Pharmacy faculty and staff serving as caregivers face challenges such as the cognitive load ass

Crossmodal correspondences influence adaptation during rule-based category learning of objects.

The formation of object categories can be influenced by multisensory information and prior knowledge. To accommodate changes in category structures or new perceptual experiences, category rules should be flexible to changes in sensory information and task goals. However, multisensory category adaptation may be influenced by crossmodal correspondences between object features, reflecting, for example, the learned statistics of the environment. Across three independent experiments, participants first learned a category structure defined by corresponding or noncorresponding audio-visual cues (Expe

Cortical and brainstem mechanisms of pain: linking defensive responses, descending modulation, and affective-sensory integration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain is a multidimensional experience emerging from the coordinated activity of distributed neural circuits that integrate sensory, emotional, and cognitive information. The purpose of this review is to highlight and synthesise current understanding of the circuit mechanisms underlying ascending nociception and descending modulation of pain, with particular emphasis on brainstem areas and their involvement in shaping pain perception. We discuss how dysregulation of these control systems may contribute to persistent pain states. RECENT FINDINGS: It is consistently demonstrat

Ablation of Iron Regulatory Protein 2 produces a neurological disorder characterized by motor, somatosensory, and executive dysfunction in mice.

Iron is an important cofactor for many proteins and is used to create Fe-S clusters and heme prosthetic groups that enzymes use to catalyze enzymatic reactions. Proteins involved in the import, export, and sequestration of iron are regulated by Iron Regulatory Proteins (IRPs). Recently, a patient with bi-allelic loss of function mutations in IREB2 leading to the absence of IRP2 protein was discovered. The patient failed to achieve developmental milestones and was diagnosed with dystonic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, microcytic hypochromic anemia, and frontal lobe atrophy. Several more IREB2 defici

Multi-timescale neural dynamics for multisensory integration.

Carrying out any everyday task, be it driving in traffic, conversing with friends or playing basketball, requires rapid selection, integration and segregation of stimuli from different sensory modalities. At present, even the most advanced artificial intelligence-based systems are unable to replicate the multisensory processes that the human brain routinely performs, but how neural circuits in the brain carry out these processes is still not well understood. In this Perspective, we discuss recent findings that shed fresh light on the oscillatory neural mechanisms that mediate multisensory inte

Reconciling the object and spatial processing views of the perirhinal cortex through task-relevant unitization.

The perirhinal cortex is situated on the border between sensory association cortex and the hippocampal formation. It serves an important function as a transition area between the sensory neocortex and the medial temporal lobe. While the perirhinal cortex has traditionally been associated with object coding and the "what" pathway of the temporal lobe, current evidence suggests a broader function of the perirhinal cortex in solving feature ambiguity and processing complex stimuli. Besides fulfilling functions in object coding, recent neurophysiological findings in freely moving rodents indicate

Thinking about thinking about pain: a qualitative investigation of rumination in chronic pain.

UNLABELLED: SUMMARY AIMS: A thinking process central to the etiology of emotional disorders, rumination is commonly observed in chronic pain. However, very little is understood about the characteristics of pain-related rumination and the mechanisms through which rumination impacts on pain perception and disability. This study began investigating this cognitive phenomenon by qualitatively examining chronic pain patients' experience of rumination. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 chronic pain patients. Themes were extracted from interview transcripts using thematic ana

Egocentric and allocentric spatial memory in idiopathic cervical dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether impaired spatial memory contributes to cognitive deficits in idiopathic cervical dystonia (ICD). METHODS: The authors tested 16 untreated patients with ICD and 16 healthy controls with four variants of a classic spatial memory task, in which subjects were requested to recall the locations of 16 toy objects either immediately after their presentation or after an unfilled delay of 10 minutes. By varying the spatial relationship between subject and toy object array, we tested encoding and memory of spatial relationships between subject and toy objects (egocentri

Changes in executive control across the life span: examination of task-switching performance.

A study was conducted to examine changes in executive control processes over the life span. More specifically, changes in processes responsible for preparation and interference control that underlie the ability to flexibly alternate between two different tasks were examined. Individuals (N = 152) ranging in age from 7 to 82 years participated in the study. A U-shaped function was obtained for switch costs (i.e., the time required to switch between tasks compared with a repeated-task baseline), with larger costs found for young children and older adults. Switch costs were reduced with practice,

Attentional control over language lateralization in dyslexic children: deficit or delay?

Two previous verbal dichotic studies by Kershner and Morton (Neuropsychologia 28, 181-198, 1990) using the forced-attention methodology (Bryden, Strategies of Information Processing, Academic Press, London, 1978) demonstrated that the order in which the ears were monitored (LE first or RE first) determined whether learning disabled children compared to age-matched nondisabled children were more weakly or strongly lateralized. The same technique was used with the addition of controls for lateral head and eye movements, specific diagnostic criteria to include only phonological dyslexics, IQ and

Network-oriented neurorehabilitation after stroke: a paradigmatic approach.

Stroke recovery increasingly demands a reconceptualization of the brain as a dynamic network system. This opinion paper advocates for a network-oriented neurorehabilitation paradigm, grounded in the understanding that functional recovery relies on the reorganization of distributed, interconnected neural systems across the central nervous system. While traditional rehabilitation approaches often target isolated impairments, a broader challenge is in the insufficient specification and documentation of therapeutic processes and their underlying mechanisms, which are often incompletely described a

Electroencephalography-based signatures of cognitive resilience in individuals with stable mild cognitive impairment despite carrying a high-risk for progression to dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a transitional state between normal aging and dementia, with 30%-50% of cases progressing to dementia. However, some individuals remain stable over time, even when presenting biomarker profiles that indicate high risk. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying this resilience is essential for developing targeted preventive strategies. METHODS: Within the Italian INTERCEPTOR project, we investigated electroencephalography (EEG) markers of resilience in MCI individuals who exhibited reduced hippocampal volume and abnormal fluorodeoxy
