The antigen of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) was detected in the lungs of the following free-living small rodents trapped in different localities in Eastern Slovakia: Clethrionomys glareolus (2 positive samples of 7), Apodemus flavicollis (1 sample of 24) and Apodemus agrarius (7 positive samples of 66). Using direct immunofluorescence and in vitro complement fixation we have found antibodies with affinity to the cytoplasm of basal cells (B cyt Ab) in five out of sixteen well documented cases of herpes gestationis (HG). In one case B cyt Ab were found in the serum from a pregnancy whereas "HG factor" was found in a serum from a previous pregnancy. B cyt Ab were also detected in cord blood. These findings may be relevant to the fact that as suggested by histological ultrastructural studies, the basal cell may be the initial target in HG.

A 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl suffered from unilateral disciform keratitis and iritis associated with varicella. While they were treated with topical corticosteroid, idoxuridine, and atropine drops, dendritic lesions typical of herpes zoster appeared four months after the onset of eruptive skin lesions. Using the direct immunofluorescent method, we showed varicella-zoster virus antigen in the epithelial cells scraped from the dendritic lesion.

Seventy patients with mumps orchitis were investigated. Serological tests for antitesticular antibodies, using four different techniques showed positive results in 25 patients. Antivirus antibodies were detected and they reached higher values during the remission period of acute cases. Delayed hypersensitivity was studied by means of skin tests using homologous antigenic material. Several patients gave definite positive reactions. Antibodies to Epstein-Barr (EB) virus capsid antigen and EB virus complement fixing antibodies were estimated in sera from 23 children and 27 young adults with infectious mononucleosis, and in 79 control patients. Complement fixing antibodies, but not those to virus capsid antigen, were much lower in patients tested during acute infectious mononucleosis than in controls. Complement-fixing antibodies against an antigen prepared from the EB3 line of cultured Burkitt tumour cells were studied in various groups of patients and control individuals. Higher antibody titres were observed in patients with Burkitt's tumour than in African patients with other diagnoses.
