PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate graft survival, postoperative complications, and visual outcome after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) for keratoconus (KC) in eyes with or without a history of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on all cases of PKP performed at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2001, for KC.

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is recurrent chronic allergic conjunctivitis occurring in the prepubertal age-group with secondary involvement of the cornea and is self-limiting in character. The disease is prevalent worldwide but it shows predominance in the areas with dry and warm climate including the South Asia. VKC represents about 3% of the serious ophthalmic disease in some parts of the world where the prevalence is rate is high.Type I hypersensitivity reaction which is IgE-dependent and type IV hypersensitivity reaction have been implicated for the pathogenesis VKC.

In this prospective pilot study we saw 42 consecutive giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) patients (80 eyes), all of whom were found to have some meibomian gland dysfunction blepharitis. Severity of GPC at presentation correlated with severity of meibomian gland dysfunction blepharitis (Kendall's tau b averaged 0.246 across the adjusted statistical analyses).
