We report on a seventy-year-old woman who developed a non-union of the distal radius with infection of the ulnocarpal joint after having sustained a fracture. The fistula, the distal ulna and the ulnocarpal joint were resected. Two months later we removed the non-union and carried out open reduction and internal fixation of the radius with a palmar plate. Good functional and cosmetic results were achieved.

The prevalence of immunity against diphtheria among Okayama local government staff members involved in diphtheria infection control was measured. Diphtheria booster vaccination was administered to staff members with low antitoxin levels (<0.1 IU/ml) in order to reinforce of immunity. Ninety-one (36.7%) of 248 staff members, 20-69 years of age, had fully protective antitoxin levels (> or =0.1 IU/ml), and the remaining 157 (63.3%) showed levels of <0.1 IU/ml. With the rise in pH of gastric juice that results from vagotomy, there is a high incidence of intraluminal gastric Candida albicans overgrowth in the immediate postoperative period.
