Divergent Biochemical Strategies and Organ-Specific Metabolic Adjustments in Spinach Mediated by Exogenous Amino Acids Under Salt Stress.

Understanding the physiological and biochemical responses of spinach to salt stress through amino acid supplementation is crucial for improving crop resilience under increasing soil salinity conditions. Salt stress represents one of the most severe abiotic constraints limiting vegetable crop productivity worldwide, yet comprehensive studies examining organ-specific metabolic reprogramming across entire plant systems remain limited. However, knowledge about how different amino acids mediate these responses through distinct metabolic pathways is limited. We investigated mineral nutrition, antiox

EnviroSpect-guided ConvMixer-ViT framework for environment-robust potato leaf disease detection.

Potato is one of the world's most important staple crops, yet its productivity is persistently compromised by foliar diseases particularly early blight (Alternaria solani) and late blight (Phytophthora infestans) which together account for substantial annual yield losses. Conventional visual diagnosis by agronomists is laborintensive, subjective, and ill-suited to large-scale deployment, while prevailing deep learning solutions tend to degrade under real-world variability in illumination, background, and leaf orientation, and typically require large, annotated datasets that are rarely availabl

Integrated Nematode Management Strategies: Optimization of Combined Nematicidal and Multi-Functional Inputs.

Considerable losses are inflicted by plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) due to their obligate parasitism; serious damage occurs in many susceptible crops, and the parasites have a broad distribution worldwide. As most PPNs have a subterranean nature, the complexity of soils in the plant rhizosphere and the structures and functions of the soil food webs necessitate a grasp of the relevant biotic/abiotic factors in order to ensure their effective control. Such factors frequently lead to the inconsistent performance and untapped activity of applied bionematicides, hindering efforts to develop relia

Transgenerational effects of inter-ploidy cross direction on reproduction and F2 seed development of Arabidopsis thaliana F1 hybrid triploids.

Reproduction in triploid plants is important for understanding polyploid population dynamics. We show that genetically identical reciprocal F1 hybrid triploids can display transgenerational epigenetic effects on viable F2 seed development. The success or failure of reproductive outcomes from intra-species crosses between plants of different ploidy levels is an important factor in flowering plant evolution and crop breeding. However, the effects of inter-ploidy cross directions on F1 hybrid offspring fitness are poorly understood. In Arabidopsis thaliana, hybridization between diploid and tetra

Envirotyping-driven strategies to enhance soybean adaptation across Southern Africa.

UNLABELLED: Soybean has become a strategic crop in global agricultural systems due to its central role as a source of vegetable protein and oil, while rising demand and increasing environmental variability continue to challenge cultivar development and deployment. In this context, Southern Africa has emerged as a promising region for soybean expansion, although progress remains constrained by strong genotype-by-environment interaction (G [Formula: see text] E) interactions and the limited availability of adapted cultivars. Thus, this study aimed to (i) delineate Macro Environments (MACROs) thr

Metatranscriptomic insights into the effect of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum inoculation on fermentation metabolism, bacterial community function and antibiotic resistome of corn silage.

Lactic acid bacteria inoculants are widely applied in silage production; however, it remains unclear how Lactiplantibacillus plantarum inoculation shapes temporal changes in microbial function during ensiling, and whether it accelerates normal successional process or is associated with changes in antibiotic resistome dynamics. In this study, we applied an integrated metatranscriptomic approach combining microbial community profiling, differential expression analysis, carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZy) profiling, and resistome characterization to analyze whole-crop corn silage inoculated with L.

Zinc oxide and ferric oxide nanoparticles combination increase plant growth, yield, and quality of soybean under semiarid region.

Zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) malnutrition are global health challenges that need immediate attention. Hence, to address these issues, a two-pronged approach involving the development and application of novel Zn and Fe products for crop fertilization may be a potential solution. Therefore, zinc oxide (ZnO) (∼13.2 nm) and ferric oxide (Fe2O3) (∼15 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and characterized. Seven nutrients treatments viz, control, ZnO- NPs (25 mg kg-1), Fe2O3-NPs (25 mg kg-1), ZnO + Fe2O3-NPs (25 mg kg-1each), ZnSO4 (55.8 mg kg-1), FeSO4 (60.4 mg kg-1) and ZnSO4+ FeSO4 (55.8 and 60.4

Low Dose Colonization of Broiler Chickens With ESBL-/AmpC- Producing Escherichia coli in a Seeder-Bird Model Independent of Antimicrobial Selection Pressure.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- (ESBL-) and AmpC beta-lactamase- (AmpC-) producing Enterobacteriaceae pose a risk for both human and animal health. For livestock, highest prevalences have been reported in broiler chickens, which are therefore considered as a reservoir of multidrug-resistant bacteria. The possibility of transfer to humans either by a close contact to colonized broiler flocks or through contaminated retail meat results in the necessity to develop intervention measures for the entire broiler production chain. In this regard, a basic understanding of the colonization process is

First Report of Late Blight Caused by Phytophthora infestans Clonal Lineage US-24 on Potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Wisconsin.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) crops are grown on over 25,090 ha in Wisconsin annually. Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) deBary, is a potentially devastating disease that affects tomato and potato crops in Wisconsin every few years when inoculum is introduced and weather conditions favor disease. Incidence and severity of late blight are highly variable in these few years due to differences in pathogen clonal lineages, their timing and means of introduction, and weather conditions. Prevention of this disease through prophylactic fungicide application can cost producers million

The cellobiose sensor CebR is the gatekeeper of Streptomyces scabies pathogenicity.

UNLABELLED: A relatively small number of species in the large genus Streptomyces are pathogenic; the best characterized of these is Streptomyces scabies. The pathogenicity of S. scabies strains is dependent on the production of the nitrated diketopiperazine thaxtomin A, which is a potent plant cellulose synthesis inhibitor. Much is known about the genetic loci associated with plant virulence; however, the molecular mechanisms by which S. scabies triggers expression of thaxtomin biosynthetic genes, beyond the pathway-specific activator TxtR, are not well understood. In this study, we demonstrat

Cell-free supernatants from entomopathogenic bacteria as a potential alternative for managing Tetranychus urticae in tomato.

Tetranychus urticae is a cosmopolitan pest that causes significant yield losses in tomato crops. Entomopathogenic bacteria of the genera Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus produce diverse secondary metabolites with acaricidal properties. This study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal and deterrent effects of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) of Photorhabdus luminescens, Xenorhabdus szentirmaii and Xenorhabdus doucetiae against T. urticae in tomato. In Petri dishes, each CFS was sprayed onto leaflets infested with females or eggs. The deterrent activity was assessed through dual-choice bioassays. Furthermor

An OsSK12/13-OsERF60-OsHsfA2c module regulates heat stress tolerance in rice.

Heat stress severely impairs plant growth and limits crop productivity. GSK3-like family proteins regulate diverse cellular processes, including plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Nevertheless, their specific functions in heat stress responses remain poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrate that the expression of OsSK13 and the protein abundance of OsSK12/13 increase under heat stress in rice. Mutation in both OsSK12/13 compromises thermotolerance at both vegetative and reproductive stages, whereas overexpression of OsSK13 enhances seedling thermotolerance. We further identify t

Transposable element dynamics in Drosophila suzukii: characterization and implications for food consumption-related genes.

Drosophila suzukii, a species native to southeast Asia, is a major pest of berry and stone fruit crops. This species has invaded Europe and the Americas in just a few decades, becoming a global concern to agriculture. In contrast to other flies, D. suzukii infests ripening fruits, causing substantial economic losses worldwide. Nevertheless, genomic studies on this species remain insufficient, especially in transposable elements (TEs), which constitute nearly half of its genome and represent a substantially larger genomic fraction than in most other Drosophila species. Given their ability to re

An outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O26:H11 associated with dried fruit, UK 2023.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are zoonotic, foodborne pathogens that cause outbreaks of infectious gastrointestinal disease, including haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) which can be fatal. In November 2023, a foodborne outbreak of STEC serotype O26:H11 stx2a/eae, involving 40 cases (54% female and 76% aged 0-9 years old), including 19 children with HUS. Whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed the outbreak strain was multidrug resistant and likely originated from outside the United Kingdom. Epidemiological analysis showed greatest odds of exposure among cases for consumption o

Influence of Sunlight Exposure and Traditional Dehydration on Chemical and Nutritional Properties of Oxalis tuberosa (oca) Tubers.

Oca (Oxalis tuberosa), a potato like crops, is cultivated extensively in the high altitude regions of the Andes. Traditionally, consumers have used sunlight to enhance the sweetness of oca and have used methods to produce a dehydrated product known as 'khaya' for its preservation. This research seeks to assess the chemical and nutritional changes that four oca cultivars undergo after exposure to sunlight and traditional dehydration techniques. The results of the study indicate that exposure of freshly harvested oca to sunlight contributes to antioxidant capacity, increased concentration of pol

Jasmonic acid enhances aluminum tolerance of rice by regulating detoxification genes.

Aluminum (Al) stress in acidified soils represents a critical limitation for rice productivity and sustainable cropping. Jasmonic acid (JA) plays a crucial role in plant responses to Al stress, yet its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the role and mechanisms of JA in mitigating Al toxicity in rice. We found that Al stress upregulates the expression of the genes associated with JA biosynthesis in rice roots, leading to elevated endogenous JA levels, implying its involvement in Al stress responses. Exogenous JA application significantly redu

Spatiotemporal, environmental, and behavioral predictors of Varroa mite intensity in managed honey bee apiaries.

Honey bees contribute substantially to the world economy through pollination services and honey production. In the U.S. alone, honey bee pollination is estimated to contribute at least $11 billion annually, primarily through the pollination of specialty crops. However, beekeepers lose about half of their hives every season due to disease, insecticides, and other environmental factors. Here, we explore and validate a spatiotemporal statistical model of Varroa destructor mite burden (in mites/300 bees) in managed honey bee colonies, exploring the impact of both environmental factors and beekeepe
