[Perioral dermatitis].

Intensive investigations between 1969-1974 on 245 patients with perioral dermatitis are reported. Results are discussed with special regard to clinical behaviour, histology, differential diagnosis and etiology of the disease. Eczematous sources, bacterial and mycotic infections can be ruled out as etiological factors. Therapeutical considerations are discussed.

Scalp Microbiome Dynamics Can Contribute to the Clinical Effect of a Novel Antiseborrheic Dermatitis Shampoo Containing Patented Antifungal Actives: A Randomized Controlled Study.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp seborrheic dermatitis (SD) can cause physical discomfort and social embarrassment in affected individuals. Mild-to-moderate scalp SD can be managed using topical products with antifungal, antiinflammatory, and keratolytic properties. METHODS: A two-phase, randomized, controlled study was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a newly formulated anti-SD shampoo containing two patented antifungal actives and to investigate the associated changes in the scalp microbiota. The intervention involved a 2-week intensive phase for the 42 subjects included in the study, cons

Malassezia and Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common debilitating neurodegenerative disease caused by a loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra within the central nervous system (CNS). The process leading to this neuronal loss is poorly understood. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common benign inflammatory condition of the skin which mainly affects lipid-rich regions of the head and trunk. SD is caused by over proliferation of the lipophilic fungus Malassezia. PD and SD are strongly associated. The increased PD risk following an SD diagnosis (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.36, 2.1; p < 0.001) reported by Tanner

Skin disorders in Parkinson's disease: potential biomarkers and risk factors.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by a symptom triad comprising resting tremor, rigidity, and akinesia. In addition, non-motor symptoms of PD are well recognized and often precede the overt motor manifestations. Cutaneous manifestations as markers of PD have long been discussed, and cumulative evidence shows an increased prevalence of certain dermatological disorders in PD. Seborrheic dermatitis is considered to occur as a premotor feature of PD referable to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. Also, an increased risk of mel

Focus on the Top Ten Diagnoses Could Reduce Pediatric Dermatology Referrals.

There is a sense that many patients seen at referral centers could be managed at a primary health care level. The objective of the current study was to examine the range of diagnoses among consultations at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, to help develop a strategy for targeted education of primary health care personnel. This was a retrospective review of data for children seen at a pediatric dermatology clinic from 2005 to 2010, recorded according to International Classification of Diseases coding and compared with published data from similar clinical settings. Th

[Immunohistochemical study for the localization of apolipoprotein AI, B100, and E in normal and psoriatic skin].

Recently many new knowledge about the LDL receptors and LDL-receptor mediated endocytosis of cholesterol have been reported (Goldstein et al. 1979). This phenomenon is also observed in keratinocyte. The use of low density lipoprotein-gold (LDL-gold) technique in electron microscopy demonstrated a reciprocal correlation between cell differentiation and LDL-receptor expression in normal and psoriatic skin which is characterized by keratotic disorder and epidermal hyperproliferation. (Mommaas-Kienhuis et al. 1987). In order to study the interaction between normal skin and lipid, and the affect of

Allergic contact dermatitis to propyl gallate and pentylene glycol in an emollient cream.

A 62-year-old man, with a 20-year history of seborrhoeic dermatitis, presented with a worsening of his dermatitis. He had previously been demonstrated to be allergic to various topical corticosteroids, so he had been using an emollient cream (Sebclair), containing piroctone olamine and various anti-inflammatory substances, for 6 months, with good effect. Patch testing to the cream and its ingredients revealed positive reactions to both propyl gallate and pentylene glycol. A positive reaction to propylene glycol was also detected, whereas patch testing to butylene glycol was negative. Complete

A cross-sectional study on the prevalence and determinants of various neonatal dermatoses.

BACKGROUND: During the neonatal life cycle, various dermatological conditions are common. In comparison to the skin of adults, neonates' skins are more susceptible to infections in the first week of their lives. These infections often lead to many dermatological skin complications and create worrisome among parents. Hence, it is crucial to diagnose and manage such affected neonates at the earliest. This study aimed to highlight and estimate the occurrence of numerous dermatoses and assess various skin changes that occurred physiologically and pathologically in neonates. METHODOLOGY: In this c

The role of the microbiome in scalp hair follicle biology and disease.

The skin surface microbiome and its role in skin diseases have received increasing attention over the past years. Beyond, there is evidence for a continuous exchange with the cutaneous immune system in healthy skin, where hair follicles (HFs) provide unique anatomical niches. Especially, scalp HFs form large tubular invaginations, which extend deeply into the skin and harbour a variety of microorganisms. The distinct immunology of HFs with enhanced immune cell trafficking in superficial compartments in juxtaposition to immune-privileged sites crucial for hair follicle cycling and regeneration

Increased IL-17-expressing γδ T cells in seborrhoeic dermatitis-like lesions of the Mpzl3 knockout mice.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin disorder, but its molecular pathogenesis remains elusive. Previously, we have established the Mpzl3 knockout (-/-) mice as a model for SD. In this study, we focused on early phases of skin inflammation and determined the cytokine profiles and identified immune cell types in the lesional skin in the Mpzl3 -/- mice. Using flow cytometry, we detected a significant increase of CD45+ leucocytes, CD3+ T lymphocytes and especially γδ T cells but not αβ T cells in the lesional skin compared to control. We also detected high levels of IL-17 and

Three-dimensional multiphoton/optical coherence tomography for diagnostic applications in dermatology.

A preliminary clinical trial using state-of-the-art multiphoton tomography (MPT) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for three-dimensional (3D) multimodal in vivo imaging of normal skin, nevi, scars and pathologic skin lesions has been conducted. MPT enabled visualization of sub-cellular details with axial and transverse resolutions of <2 μm and <0.5 μm, respectively, from a volume of 0.35 × 0.35 × 0.2 mm(3) at a frame rate of 0.14 Hz (512 × 512 pixels). State-of-the-art OCT, operating at a center wavelength of 1300 nm, was capable of acquiring 3D images depicting the layered architecture o

Is Demodex folliculorum an aetiological factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis?

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin disease for which no single cause has been found, although many factors have been implicated. The mite Demodex folliculorum (DF) is most commonly seen in the pilosebaceous unit in humans. SD is located in areas that are rich in sebaceous glands, which are also preferred by DF. AIMS: To compare the number of DF parasites in patients with clinical SD and in healthy controls, and to investigate any possible relationship between the number of DF mites and the presence of SD. METHODS: The study comprised 38 patients with SD and

Histoplasmosis clinically imitating cutaneous malignancy.

Disseminated histoplasmosis can have a varied presentation when it affects the skin. Presentation mimicking a cutaneous neoplasm is an uncommon manifestation. We present the case of an 86-year-old man presenting with a cutaneous lesion clinically suspicious for malignancy that was ultimately determined to be his first clinical manifestation of disseminated histoplasmosis after biopsy for histopathologic analysis. Microscopically, the lesion was a nodule with an eroded epidermis overlying a dense dermal inflammatory process. The infiltrate was characterized by numerous epithelioid histiocytes a
