To describe the epidemiologic and clinical features associated with invasive amebiasis in Bangladesh, 85 hospitalized diarrheal patients with hematophagous trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica in their stools were compared to a control group of 84 hospitalized diarrheal patients without amebiasis. Postmortem examinations were carried out in 22 deaths due to amebiasis. Chonemorphine, a steroidal alkaloid isolated from Chonemorpha fragrans Moon (Apocyanaceae) was identified as an antimoebic principle during the course of a screening programme for novel antiparasitic agents from plant sources. At a dosage of 100 mg/kg x 4 chonemorphine led to a 100% cure of experimental hepatic infection in golden hamsters and cleared 90% of the intestinal infection in weanling Wistar rats at 200 mg/kg (x4) dosages. The discovery of chonemorphine as an antiamoebic agent is an addition to the few known plant amoebicides such as emetine and conessine.

In two cases there was simultaneous or sequential occurrence of amebiasis, shigellosis, and giardiasis in male homosexuals. Enteric pathogens may, under the proper conditions, be venereally transmitted. In particular, the sexual practices of male homosexuals, most significantly, oral-anal contact, appear to provide the necesseary link for transmission. Evidence suggests that this is a growing problem.

Nineteen patients presented to teaching hospitals in Brisbane with symptomatic amoebiasis from 1965 to 1973. The majority of patients gave a history of overseas travel or residence.
