BACKGROUND: Ureteroarterial fistulas are rare. We describe a case of ureteral-arterial fistulas (UAF) repaired with an endovascular stent graft and examine late complications associated with the procedure.
CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman with a history of complicated locally invasive cervical cancer treated with chemoradiation presented initially with right leg rest pain and chronic intermittent gross hematuria. She was found to have an ureteroarterial fistula and underwent successful endovascular exclusion with a covered stent with resolution of her symptoms. She returned 1 year later with

Penetrating chest trauma is common but few need surgical treatment (10-20%). The mortality of gunshot wounds of the heart is 45%, among the wounded arriving at the hospital. The suspicion of wound heart with an inlet in the heart area (limited by costal awnings down, clavicles top, and mid-clavicular line outside) and pericardial effusion remains a surgical indication. Gunshot wounds of the heart with migration of the projectile in the pulmonary artery are rare. Migration of projectile into the pulmonary artery is described most often with lesions of peripheral veins without concomitant cardia

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, prognostic factors, and secondary management of stent migration in patients with malignant esophageal strictures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in a single tertiary referral university hospital to identify the incidence, management, and prognostic factors for stent migration in 332 consecutive patients with placement of a retrievable expandable metallic stent. Stent migration was classified into four patterns as locations of a migrated stent: pattern I, partially migrated in the proximal direction

We present the case of a 62-year old patient who had an elective surgery to implant a total abdominal plastic mesh due to massive herniation after prior lower body gun shots and deep wound infections. Twenty-four hours after the operation, the patient's condition deteriorated, ST-deviation occurred and the Troponin I test was positive. On admission, the patient needed moderate catecholamine therapy and echocardiography showed a pericardial effusion (>3 cm). Puncture of the effusion was impossible due to the plastic mesh and the patient was transferred to the operating room. A subxiphoidal peri

Iatrogenic perforation of the upper gastrointestinal tract is one of the most serious complications of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Treatment is challenging because stent placement or surgical repair of the perforation in this area is often impossible. We report on two cases of iatrogenic perforations of the very proximal oesophagus and distal hypopharynx which could be successfully closed by using an endoluminal vacuum sponge treatment for 5 days. Thus, the endoluminal vacuum therapy may be a useful alternative to surgery in such cases of diffi

Implant texture is an important factor influencing implant selection for breast augmentation. Natrelle Biocell implants are characterized by macrotextured shell surfaces containing irregularly arranged concavities with large open-pore diameters and depths. These properties facilitate adhesion of the implant to the surrounding tissue, thereby promoting implant immobilization. Relative to implants with other surfaces, macrotextured implants offer low rates of capsular contracture; low rates of malposition, rotation, and rippling; and high rates of patient satisfaction. However, macrotextured imp

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is now becoming a widely accepted procedure to investigate the mediastinum for the staging of non-small-cell lung cancer and diagnosing mediastinal lesions. During the intervention, some minor or major complications may occasionally occur. The present case report describes the first reported case of needle breakage during EBUS-TBNA.

Plating system modification has enabled the use of rigid fixation in younger patients having maxillofacial surgery. One of the common reported complications of the use of plates and screws in children is screw migration due to skeletal maturation. Ophthalmic complications due to maxillofacial surgery reported to date include oculomotor and abducens palsies, lacrimal damage and vision loss due to infection, retrobulbar hemorrhage, and compartment syndrome. We describe a complication unique to screw migration resulting in orbital fixation and near-globe rupture in a patient with Treacher Collins

OBJECTIVE: Submuscular plating has become a common operative treatment of length-unstable pediatric femur fractures. There has been no consensus regarding the need for plate removal after fracture union. The purpose of this report was to describe the potential constellation of findings that may occur with growth after plate retention.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: A retrospective study was done on all patients who underwent a submuscular plate application for a pediatric femur fracture at our institution between 2003 and 2010 by the senior author. We reviewed the clinical and r

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) transformed the therapy for aortic aneurysms and introduced an era of widespread use for endovascular procedures in a variety of vascular beds. Although dramatic improvements in acute outcomes drove the early enthusiasm for EVAR, a realization that the long-term integrity of the endoprostheses used for EVAR were sometimes inferior to the results obtained with open surgical reconstruction dampened enthusiasm for their use in low-risk and younger patients who mandated long-term follow-up. While early EVAR failure modes are often related to technical aspects of

Oesophageal, fully covered self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) allow palliation of dysphagia so as to support nutrition during neoadjuvant therapy. We present a 68-year old man with an oesophageal adenocarcinoma (T3N1M0) who had a fully covered oesophageal SEMS placed prior to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Repeat endoscopy 8 weeks later (for stent removal) showed that the stent had migrated and impacted upon the greater curvature of the stomach with a resultant ulcer. Surgery was delayed and, 10 weeks following the cessation of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, this patient underwent a right thor

AIM: "Buried bumper" is a complication of percutaneous gastrostomy related to the internal flange getting buried into the wall of the stomach. The aim of this study is to evaluate the management of this complication.
METHODS: The surgical and interventional radiology database in our hospital from August 1999 to May 2011 was analyzed. There were 2,007 patients who underwent percutaneous gastrostomy insertion. Notes for patients with buried bumper were reviewed. A telephonic interview with the parents of these children was performed with focused assessment of the care of the gastrostomy tube be

A 64-year-old male was found dead in his house with his face covered with blood and a 38-caliber revolver between his legs. He had been suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus and aftereffects of cerebral infarction. Autopsy revealed a normal round contact wound in the left lateral cervical region. A bullet from the firearm had entered through the left lateral cervical region and traveled to the outer right sternocleidomastoid muscle. This also triggered another wound from the fifth cervical vertebra to the muscle tissue near the right cartilage thyroid. At the end of this channel, there were

BACKGROUND: Surgical approaches to temporomandibular region have been the subject of numerous controversies in the literature. Pre-auricular approaches have been used with the observance of high success rate, and during surgery history, various modifications of this approach were conducted in order to reduce irreversible sequelae. Thus, given the relevance of the study, this article proposes to alert the professionals that carry out these surgical approaches in relation to the anatomical structures involved and to describe and emphasise the benefits of endaural approach.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the liquid embolic agent Onyx, an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, can be used to seal type 1 endoleaks during endovascular aortic repair (EVAR). Six patients with large aortic aneurysms and remaining type 1 endoleaks during or after EVAR were treated with Onyx embolization through a microcatheter placed in the proximal neck in five cases and in the distal neck in one case. Four of the patients were treated using the chimney technique. The type 1 endoleak was primarily sealed by Onyx in all six patients. There was no distal embolization. Two pa

OBJECTIVES: To compare bar displacement and complication rates in three retrospective series of patients operated on by the same surgical team.
METHOD: A retrospective medical chart analysis of the three patient series was performed. In the first series, the original, unmodified Nuss technique was performed. In the second, we used the ''third point fixation'' technique, and in the last series, the correction was performed with modifications to the stabilizer and stabilizer position.
RESULTS: There were no deaths in any of the series. Minor complications occurred in six (4.9%) patients: pneumo
