Quantitative Determination of Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Position Based on Computed Tomographic Imaging.

BACKGROUND: The zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) is frequently involved in craniofacial fractures. We propose an objective approach for defining the ZMC position on skeletal and soft tissue by using Amira to process 3-dimensional (3D) facial computed tomography (CT) images. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aim to propose 1 anthropometric system, facilitated based on CT images, which can be used in quantitative analysis of ZMC position and examine the symmetry of skeletal and soft tissue of the ZMC with high reliability and validity. METHODS: Twenty Taiwanese trauma patients with pure m

Ridge preservation with and without primary wound closure: a case series.

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and histologic efficacy of the combination of alloplastic biphasic calcium phosphate composed of 30% hydroxyapatite and 70% Β-tricalcium phosphate (Osteon II) and a cross-linked collagen membrane used to reconstruct an extraction socket with new bone formation. Twelve patients, from two private dental practices, requiring extraction of maxillary and mandibular nonmolar teeth (n = 30) received both Osteon II (0.5- to 1.0-mm particle size) and the collagen membrane. The primary healing intention group (group A, n = 12) received primary flap

Computational fluid dynamics for the assessment of upper airway response to oral appliance treatment in obstructive sleep apnea.

Mandibular advancement splints (MAS), which protrude the lower jaw during sleep, are recognized as an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) through their action of enlarging the airway space and preventing upper airway collapse. However a clinical challenge remains in preselecting patients who will respond to this form of therapy. We aimed to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in conjunction with patient upper airway scans to understand the upper airway response to treatment. Seven OSA patients were selected based on their varied treatment response (assessed by the apnea-hy

Is Central Asia the eastern outpost of the Neandertal range? A reassessment of the Teshik-Tash child.

Since its discovery in southeastern Uzbekistan in 1938, the Teshik-Tash child has been considered a Neandertal. Its affinity is important to studies of Late Pleistocene hominin growth and development as well as interpretations of the Central Asian Middle Paleolithic and the geographic distribution of Neandertals. A close examination of the original Russian monograph reveals the incompleteness of key morphologies associated with the cranial base and face and problems with the reconstruction of the Teshik-Tash cranium, making its Neandertal attribution less certain than previously assumed. This

Maxillary tuberosity block bone graft: innovative technique and case report.

Hard tissue defects resulting from trauma, infection, or tooth loss often lead to an unfavorable anatomy of maxillary and mandibular alveolar processes that become not suitable for implant therapy without bone grafting. The goal of pre-implant bone augmentation of the deficient alveolar ridge is reconstruction of the proper alveolar anatomy through the techniques of socket preservation, horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation, sinus bone grafting, and others. A variety of bone grafts and bone grafting materials have been used in the last 30 years for augmentation of deficient alveolar ridge

A retrospective analysis of gunshot injuries to the maxillo-facial region.

This study analysed the prevalence, demography, soft- and hard-tissue injury patterns, management and complications of gunshot injuries to the maxillo-facial region in 301 patients treated at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. The number of patients presenting with maxillo-facial injuries caused by gunshot increased over the 15-year study period. The majority were caused by civilian type low-velocity hand-guns and were purposefully and intentionally inflicted by others. Males in their third decade of life and of low socioeconomic status were most often the victims. The wounding effects of thes

Results of reconstruction of the facial nerve.

The results of surgical treatment for facial paralysis are still difficult to compare as there is no universal scoring method. The purpose of this communication is to review the results of reconstruction of the extratemporal facial nerve with nerve grafts using our own evaluation system. Fifty-nine patients were operated on during the period 1981-1991. They had lacerations or other trauma to the face which resulted in loss of continuity of the facial nerve or branches. Three groups were considered: (a) 12 patients had injuries involving the trunk and extending up to the main branches of the fa

Periodontal repair in dogs: effect of root surface treatment with stannous fluoride or citric acid on root resorption.

This study evaluated healing, with emphasis on root resorption, following root surface treatment with 1% aqueous stannous fluoride (SnF2), saturated citric acid (CA), or saline control (C) in conjunction with periodontal flap surgery. Supraalveolar periodontal defects were surgically created and immediately treated in the mandibular premolars in 6 beagle dogs. The defect height approximated 5 to 6 mm from the reduced alveolar bone to the cemento-enamel junction. Root treatments were rotated between experimental teeth within jaw quadrants and duplicated in left and right quadrants in the dogs.

Periodontal repair in dogs: effect of wound stabilization on healing.

This study evaluated a biodegradable polylactic acid matrix as a wound stabilizing implant in reconstructive periodontal surgery. Supra-alveolar circumferential periodontal defects, 5 to 6 mm large, were surgically created around the mandibular premolars in 7 beagle dogs. The root surfaces in left and right jaw quadrants were treated with either heparin or saline. In this model, root surface treatment with heparin compromises periodontal repair and results in a long junctional epithelium and a reduced connective tissue repair to the root surface, whereas saline treatment results in almost comp

High-Fidelity Synthesis of Temporomandibular Joint Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Images via Latent Diffusion Models.

Background: The development of robust artificial intelligence (AI) models for diagnosing Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) is severely constrained by data scarcity and patient privacy regulations. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the gold standard for assessing osseous changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), inherently contains sensitive biometric facial features, making de-identification difficult without losing critical anatomical information. This study aims to develop and evaluate TMJCTGenerator, a specialized latent diffusion model (LDM) framework designed to synthesize high-f

Morphometric analysis of secondary palate development in human embryos.

Rapid shelf elevation and contact of the secondary palate and fusion reportedly occur due to a growth-related equilibrium change in the structures within the oro-nasal cavity. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate complex three-dimensional morphological changes and their effects on rapid movements, such as shelf elevation and contact, and fusion. Morphological changes during secondary palate formation were analyzed using high-resolution digitalized imaging data (phase-contrast X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance images) obtained from 22 human embryonic and fetal samples. Bone Regeneration Following Implant Failure Using the Khoury Technique: A Case Report.

Implant retreatment following implant failure represents a biologically and technically demanding scenario, particularly in the esthetic zone. Sites of previous implant failure are frequently characterized by residual inflammation, altered bone physiology, and reduced regenerative potential, which may negatively affect the prognosis of replacement implants. A staged, biologically driven approach is therefore recommended to restore hard and soft tissues prior to implant replacement. This clinical case report describes the management of a compromised anterior maxillary site following implant fai

Melnick-Needles Syndrome: Synthesizing Current Knowledge on Etiology, Clinical Presentation, Diagnostic Methods, and Potential Therapeutic Options.

Melnick-Needles syndrome (MNS) is a rare X-linked dominant skeletal dysplasia caused by pathogenic FLNA variants, primarily affecting females due to male lethality. Characterised by severe craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities, MNS exhibits marked phenotypic variability influenced by skewed X-inactivation, somatic mosaicism, and variant-specific functional consequences. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing and ACMG-based variant classification have refined diagnosis, particularly for pathogenic variants in exon 22, yet genotype-phenotype correlations remain incompletely defined. Outcomes and influencing factors of dental implants in fibula, iliac crest, and scapula free flaps: a retrospective case-control study.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction with vascularized bone grafts after ablative surgery and subsequent dental rehabilitation with implants is often challenging; however, it helps improve the patient's quality of life. This retrospective case-control study aimed to determine the implant survival/success rates in different vascularized bone grafts and potential risk factors. METHODS: Only patients who received implants in free vascularized bone grafts between 2012 and 2020 were included. The free flap donor sites were the fibula, iliac crest, and scapula. The prosthetic restoration had to be completed, an

Identification of Root Canal Morphology in Fused-rooted Mandibular Second Molars From X-ray Images Based on Deep Learning.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the intricate anatomical morphology of fused-rooted mandibular second molars (MSMs) is essential for root canal treatment. The present study utilized a deep learning approach to identify the three-dimensional root canal morphology of MSMs from two-dimensional X-ray images. METHODS: A total of 271 fused-rooted MSMs were included in the study. Micro-computed tomography reconstruction images and two-dimensional X-ray projection images were obtained. The ground truth of three-dimensional root canal morphology was determined through micro-computed tomography images, whi
