Intelligent ensemble T-S fuzzy neural networks with RCDPSO_DM optimization for effective handling of complex clinical pathway variances.

Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) can be used to handle complex, fuzzy, uncertain clinical pathway (CP) variances. However, there are many drawbacks, such as slow training rate, propensity to become trapped in a local minimum and poor ability to perform a global search. In order to improve overall performance of variance handling by T-S FNNs, a new CP variance handling method is proposed in this study. It is based on random cooperative decomposing particle swarm optimization with double mutation mechanism (RCDPSO_DM) for T-S FNNs. Moreover, the proposed integrated learning algor

Present habitat suitability for Anopheles atroparvus (Diptera, Culicidae) and its coincidence with former malaria areas in mainland Portugal.

Malaria was a major health problem in the first half of the 20th Century in mainland Portugal. Nowadays, although the disease is no longer endemic, there is still the risk of future endemic infections due to the continuous occurrence of imported cases and the possibility of transmission in the country by Anopheles atroparvus Van Thiel, 1927. Since vector abundance constitute one of the foremost factors in malaria transmission, we have created several habitat suitability models to describe this vector species' current distribution. Three different correlative models; namely (i) a multilayer per

Characterizing temporal development of biofilm porosity using artificial neural networks.

We used artificial neural networks (ANN) to compute parameters characterising biofilm structure from biofilm images and to interpolate a limited number of experimental data characterising the effects of nutrient concentration and flow velocity on the areal porosity of biofilms. ANN were trained using a set of experimental data characterising structural parameters of biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC #700829), Pseudomonas fluorescens (ATCC #700830) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC #700831) for various flow velocities and glucose concentrations. We used 80% of the data to train ANN and 10%

Novel network architecture and learning algorithm for the classification of mass abnormalities in digitized mammograms.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this paper is to present a novel learning algorithm for the classification of mass abnormalities in digitized mammograms. METHODS AND MATERIAL: The proposed approach consists of new network architecture and a new learning algorithm. The original idea is based on the introduction of an additional neuron in the hidden layer for each output class. The additional neurons for benign and malignant classes help in improving memorization ability without destroying the generalization ability of the network. The training is conducted by combining minimal distance-based

Autonomy in robots and other agents.

The word "autonomous" has become widely used in artificial intelligence, robotics, and, more recently, artificial life and is typically used to qualify types of systems, agents, or robots: we see terms like "autonomous systems," "autonomous agents," and "autonomous robots." Its use in these fields is, however, both weak, with no distinctions being made that are not better and more precisely made with other existing terms, and varied, with no single underlying concept being involved. This ill-disciplined usage contrasts strongly with the use of the same term in other fields such as biology, phi

Dual-route and connectionist models: a step towards a combined model.

Current models of word recognition are mainly constructed within the frameworks of either dual-route or connectionist theories. The most important test of a word recognition model is how it succeeds in accounting for various reading behaviors. In the present paper dual-route and connectionist word recognition models are briefly described and evaluated. As a further development of these models, a combined framework is proposed. An amalgamation of the two main types of models might give a more satisfactory account of various phenomena within word recognition.

Detection of malignancy associated changes in cervical cell nuclei using feed-forward neural networks.

Normal cells in the presence of a precancerous lesion undergo subtle changes of their DNA distribution when observed by visible microscopy. These changes have been termed Malignancy Associated Changes (MACs). Using statistical models such as neural networks and discriminant functions it is possible to design classifiers that can separate these objects from truly normal cells. The correct classification rate using feed-forward neural networks is compared to linear discriminant analysis when applied to detecting MACs. Classifiers were designed using 53 nuclear features calculated from images for

Self-organizing multi-resolution grid for motion planning and control.

A fully self-organizing neural network approach to low-dimensional control problems is described. We consider the problem of learning to control an object and solving the path planning problem at the same time. Control is based on the path planning model that follows the gradient of the stationary solution of a diffusion process working in the state space. Previous works are extended by introducing a self-organizing multigrid-like discretizing structure to represent the external world. Diffusion is simulated within a recurrent neural network built on this multigrid system. The novelty of the a

Feasibility of Machine Learned Intracardiac Electrograms to Predict Postinfarction Ventricular Scar Topography.

BACKGROUND: Accurate delineation of scar patterns is valuable for guiding catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia. We hypothesized that scar and its pattern of distribution can be determined from intracardiac electrograms using computational signal processing and that further improvements in classification can be achieved with a convolutional neural network. METHODS: A total of 5 sheep underwent anteroseptal infarction (plus 1 healthy control) with electroanatomic mapping (129±12 days post-infarct). A whole-heart histological model of the postinfarction scar was created and coregistered

ShaderNN: A Lightweight and Efficient Inference Engine for Real-time Applications on Mobile GPUs.

Inference using deep neural networks on mobile devices has been an active area of research in recent years. The design of a deep learning inference framework targeted for mobile devices needs to consider various factors, such as the limited computational capacity of the devices, low power budget, varied memory access methods, and I/O bus bandwidth governed by the underlying processor's architecture. Furthermore, integrating an inference framework with time-sensitive applications - such as games and video-based software to perform tasks like ray tracing denoising and video processing - introduc

Self-supervised exceptional prototypical network for few-shot grading of gastric intestinal metaplasia.

Automatic grading of Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia (GIM) is valuable in assisting the diagnosis of early gastric cancer. Recently, prototypical networks are served as a effective method for medical image processing in few-shot scenarios. However, existing prototypical networks suffer from the following two limitations when applied to GIM grading: 1) Variable camera angles of gastric endoscopes result in diverse sampling granularities of GIM lesions, leading to a multitude of multiscale features. Fully supervised encoders struggle to learn robust multiscale features due to limited labeled endos

A gated task-attentive multi-task network for unified retinal image analysis.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the major causes of preventable blindness in the world, and accurate large-scale screening tools are needed urgently. Most of the deep learning methods which have been developed for retinal image analysis are treating tasks like optic disc segmentation and DR grading separately. This separation is making it difficult for the model to use the shared anatomical and contextual cues which are linking the two tasks. So we are proposing GTAM-Net, a Gated Task-Attentive Multi-Task Network for retinal image analysis. GTAM-Net is performing optic disc segmentation an

DMPFDet: An end-to-end deformable mutual-promotion learning network for multispectral visible-infrared fusion detection.

Multimodal image fusion and object detection significantly enhance detection accuracy and robustness in complex environments, which is crucial for autonomous driving. Despite the progress in multimodal fusion methods, most of them focus on generating visually appealing images while neglecting their effectiveness for downstream tasks. Meanwhile, existing multimodal detection methods often fail to fully exploit modality-specific features and cross-modal complementary information. Although some recent studies have attempted to integrate fusion and detection, they typically rely on multi-stage tra

Intelligent identification of rice leaf diseases via improved faster-RCNN with multi-feature scale fusion.

Many Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies have been applied to detect rice diseases. These approaches are either unable to identify the diseases or have a slow recognition speed. Therefore, an improved Faster-RCNN (Faster-RCNN-Pro) model is proposed to overcome these issues. First, SENet attention modules are embedded in the backbone of Faster-RCNN to enhance confidence of objects that are difficult to recognize by enhancing key image information and suppressing background information. Second, structure of the feature extraction network and RPN are improved by using multi-

Bilateral Information-Guided Diagnosis of Breast Masses in Mammography Using Vision Transformer.

Early-stage breast cancer is often asymptomatic, highlighting the critical role of computer-aided diagnostic(CAD) systems in mammography screening. While radiologists often refer to bilateral symmetry to identify abnormalities, most existing CAD methods analyze unilateral views or require image registration, which limits their ability to model structural heterogeneity and often introduces distortion. To address this, we propose a registration-free, structure-aware diagnostic framework that integrates bilateral mammography with soft spatial prompting via Vision Transformers (ViT). By directly c

Joint Dynamic Brain Network Estimation and Graph Representation Learning for the Recognition of Neurological Disorders.

Recently, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown significant improvements in the recognition of neurological disorders by incorporating brain networks/graphs. However, most existing approaches have three main limitations. First, these methodologies rely on precomputed brain networks as input, typically derived from statistical metrics (e.g., Pearson correlation), which are inherently not learnable. Second, methods often assume that the magnitude of the brain interactions remains constant across the whole scan duration. Third, representations produced by models often lack interpretability and

DCSM-Unet: Dual-path heterogeneous encoder with content-aware guidance and differential feature learning.

High-precision medical image segmentation is a prerequisite for accurate computer-aided diagnosis, yet it faces a persistent challenge in balancing fine-grained local detail extraction with global context modeling. Conventional CNN-based methods excel at analyzing local textures-critical for delineating boundaries in pathology-but suffer from limited receptive fields. Conversely, pure Transformer or state-space models (SSMs) capture the long-range dependencies needed for anatomical understanding at the cost of computational efficiency or high-frequency detail fidelity. Existing hybrid approach

Deep Cross-Branch Multi-Modal Fusion Network for early Alzheimer's diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder where early diagnosis is pivotal for effective intervention, yet it is hindered by subtle pathological feature differences among AD subtypes and severe class imbalance in medical imaging datasets. Existing structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) multimodal fusion methods for AD diagnosis mostly adopt simple concatenation or summation without fine-grained cross-modal alignment and interaction. To address these issues, we propose a Deep Cross-Branch Multi-Modal Fusion Network (DCMFN

Wide-field OCT volumetric segmentation using semi-supervised CNN and transformer integration.

Wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging can enable monitoring of peripheral changes in the retina, beyond the conventional fields of view used in current clinical OCT imaging systems. However, wide-field scans can present significant challenges for retinal layer segmentation. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown strong performance in medical imaging segmentation but typically require large-scale, high-quality, pixel-level annotated datasets to be effectively developed. To address this challenge, we propose an advanced semi-supervised learning framework that combin

Transformer-Based Feature Extraction and Optimized Deep Neural Network for Gastric Cancer Detection.

Gastric cancer is among the most common diseases worldwide and can lead to fatal outcomes. Early diagnosis significantly increases the success of treatment, and accurate and rapid analysis of histopathological images is of enormous importance. However, since manual evaluation of these images is time-consuming and open to observational errors, the need for automatic diagnosis systems supported by artificial intelligence is increasing. In this study, a multi-stage artificial intelligence-based model that performs cancer detection on gastric histopathological images is proposed. In the first stag
