Autonomic Dysfunction Impairs Baroreflex Function in an Alzheimer's Disease Animal Model.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients frequently present with orthostatic hypotension. This inability to reflexively increase blood pressure on standing is a serious health concern and increases the risk of stroke and cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE: Since there are no clear mechanisms for orthostatic hypotension in human AD, the present study assessed the autonomic changes that could explain this comorbidity in an AD animal model. METHODS: We used the established streptozotocin-induced rat model of AD (STZ-AD), which mimics many hallmark symptoms of sporadic AD in humans. Baroref

Transcutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation in the Management of Overactive Bladder: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition that has physical, social, psychosocial, and financial impacts. Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) is a modality that stimulates the nerve root fibers of L5-S3, the same spinal segments of the parasympathetic nervous system as the bladder. This scoping review aims to identify current literature available on the feasibility and outcomes of TTNS as a first-line treatment option for OAB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review of six electronic data bases was performed to identify full-text articles from 2015 that explored the impact…

Short-term effects of a maqui-based nutraceutical on heart rate variability, psycho-physical resilience and on a few metabolic biomarkers: a randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the immediate/short-term outcomes of a maqui berry-based nutraceutical (MBN) supplementation on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), resilience level, metabolism and body composition. METHODS: A randomized controlled single-blind study was performed on healthy subjects. Throughout 30 days, one group took 1,000 mg/day of an MBN (Maqui 500®), the control group had no supplementation. On day 0 (T0) and 30 (T3) all subjects performed blood tests, bioimpedance spectroscopy and questionnaires for resilience, perceived stress and short-form 12 (SF12). At T0, 75' after T0 (T1), o

Longitudinally Tracking Maternal Autonomic Modulation During Normal Pregnancy With Comprehensive Heart Rate Variability Analyses.

Changes in the maternal autonomic nervous system are essential in facilitating the physiological changes that pregnancy necessitates. Insufficient autonomic adaptation is linked to complications such as hypertensive diseases of pregnancy. Consequently, tracking autonomic modulation during progressing pregnancy could allow for the early detection of emerging deteriorations in maternal health. Autonomic modulation can be longitudinally and unobtrusively monitored by assessing heart rate variability (HRV). Yet, changes in maternal HRV (mHRV) throughout pregnancy remain poorly understood. In previ

Evaluation of Ear in Otologically Asymptomatic Patients of Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Frey syndrome is a common complication that appears few months after parotid surgery with flushing and sweating of the parotid-temporal area during mastication. It presumably originates from an aberrant nervous regeneration in which the parasympathetic fibers of the parotid gland would combine themselves with the sympathetic fibers of the sweat glands and with the cutaneous vessels. AIM: In the present study we analyze the effectiveness of a collagenous membrane derived from animal pericardium (APM) to prevent Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied

Autonomic Nervous System Function in Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

Background: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has been suggested to contribute to the high prevalence of cardiovascular complications in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), yet has not been thoroughly investigated. The current review aimed to synthesize the evidence of basal ANS function in individuals with a current diagnosis of AN and those with a previous diagnosis who had achieved weight restoration, as compared to controls. Methods: A systematic review of nine databases was conducted and studies that were published in a peer-review journal, in English, that included at least

Murine remote ischemic preconditioning upregulates preferentially hepatic glucose transporter-4 via its plasma membrane translocation, leading to accumulating glycogen in the liver.

AIMS: We previously showed that hindlimb ischemia-reperfusion (IR) enhanced glucose uptake in the liver through the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Although we suggested that the key glucose transporter (GLUT) in this hepatic glucose uptake was GLUT4 by western blotting, the molecular weight of GLUT4 was nearly the same as that of GLUT2, which is predominantly expressed in the liver. We primarily conducted a histological evaluation to determine whether IR specifically accelerates the overexpression of GLUT4, rather than GLUT2, in the hepatocytes in vitro and in vivo. MAIN ME…

Non-linear analysis of the heart rate variability in characterization of manic and euthymic phases of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: - Bipolar Disorder (BD) has been associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, with a consequent increase in mortality. Recent work highlights the non-linear analysis of ANS function. Our objective was to compare ANS modulation using recurrence plots (RP) and symbolic analysis (SA) in manic and euthymic phases of BD to controls. METHODS: - Eighteen male patients (33.1 ± 12.0 years) were assessed during mania and at discharge in the euthymic phase compared and to a healthy group matched by age (33.9 ± 10.8 years). Electrocardiographic series (1000 RR intervals, at r

The central autonomic network at rest: Uncovering functional MRI correlates of time-varying autonomic outflow.

Peripheral measures of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity at rest have been extensively employed as putative biomarkers of autonomic cardiac control. However, a comprehensive characterization of the brain-based central autonomic network (CAN) sustaining cardiovascular oscillations at rest is missing, limiting the interpretability of these ANS measures as biomarkers of cardiac control. We evaluated combined cardiac and fMRI data from 34 healthy subjects from the Human Connectome Project to detect brain areas functionally linked to cardiovagal modulation at rest. Specifically, we combined v

Autonomic Nervous System Response during Light Physical Activity in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa Measured by Wearable Devices.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with a wide range of disturbances of the autonomic nervous system. The aim of the present study was to monitor the heart rate (HR) and the heart rate variability (HRV) during light physical activity in a group of adolescent girls with AN and in age-matched controls using a wearable, minimally obtrusive device. For the study, we enrolled a sample of 23 adolescents with AN and 17 controls. After performing a 12-lead electrocardiogram and echocardiography, we used a wearable device to record a one-lead electrocardiogram for 5 min at baseline for 5 min during li

Cerebral modulation of the autonomic nervous system in term infants.

OBJECTIVE: Central topography of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function has yet to be fully deciphered. In adults it has been shown to lateralize sympathetic and parasympathetic influence predominantly to the right and left cerebral hemispheres, respectively. We examined functional topography of central ANS in newborn subjects utilizing spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), an established measure of ANS function. STUDY DESIGN: We studied newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy participating in a prospective study undergoing a therapeutic hypothermia protocol. We included su

Autonomic Regulation and Auditory Hallucinations in Individuals With Schizophrenia: An Experience Sampling Study.

Auditory Hallucinations (AH) cause substantial suffering and dysfunction, yet remain poorly understood and modeled. Previous reports have linked AH to increases in negative emotions, suggesting a role for the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in underlying this link. Employing an Experience Sampling Method (ESM) approach, 40 individuals with schizophrenia completed a 36-hour ambulatory assessment of AH and cardiac autonomic regulation. Participants carried mobile electronic devices that prompted them to report 10 times/d the severity of their momentary AH, along with a Holter monitor that continu

Severe Pain and Edema due to a Widespread Lymphangioma: Disappearance of Symptoms and Reduction of Lesion with Spinal Cord Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of epidural spinal cord stimulation on chronic neuropathic pain due to failed back surgery syndrome or nerve root lesions is well reported. There is even literature reporting the effects of spinal cord stimulation in controlling peripheral vascular lesions as in peripheral arteriopathies or diabetic neuropathies and in complex regional pain syndrome type II. This is probably due to an effect of epidural spinal cord stimulation, mainly on the parasympathetic nervous system. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14- year-old boy affected, since birth, by a quickly growing widespread lymp…

Autonomic testing of women with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, pain worse as the bladder fills and improved after emptying. These features might suggest abnormal autonomic bladder control mechanisms. We compared the structural integrity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in IC/BPS and control subjects. METHODS: IRB-approved study at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, OH to evaluate the structural integrity of the ANS in adult females. Testing included cardiovascular response to deep breathing, Valsalva maneuver, 30

The increase in sympathetic nerve density in the atrium facilitates atrial fibrillation in patients with rheumatic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (Af) is frequently observed in patients with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The hyperactivity of autonomic nervous system is known to contribute to the occurrence of Af in RHD patients. This study investigated the association between the autonomic density and the risk of Af in RHD patients. METHODS: Seventy-five patients were enrolled: (1) RHD patients with Af (N = 25, Group 1); (2) RHD patients without Af (N = 25, Group 2); (3) congenital heart disease patients without Af (N = 25, Group 3). Neurological complications in Fabry disease.

In Fabry disease, deficiency of α-galactosidase A results in the accumulation of glycosphingolipids in body fluids and tissues including corneas, blood vessels, kidneys and also structures of the central and peripheral nervous system. Many patients show cardiovascular and cerebrovascular dysfunction. Cerebrovascular dysfunction is particularly associated with a high risk of strokes and of mortality even at a young age. The prevalence and severity of cerebrovascular complications increase with patients'age. Clinical data as well as histologic and neurophysiologic studies showed predominantly sm
