Cutaneous signs of dioxin exposure.

Cutaneous stigmata of exposure to the halogenated compounds, including dioxin, may be the most sensitive index of exposure. The most common skin findings include chloracne, hyperpigmentation and hirsutism. Dioxin exposure may occur in a number of ways, in industrial, military and accidental settings. The cutaneous signs of dioxin exposure should prompt a careful evaluation for associated systemic disorders.

Erythropoietic protoporphyria. IV. Protection from sunlight.

Dihydroxyacetone and lawsone, in a vanishing cream base, applied to the skin was found to protect patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria against sunlight. The use of the same ingredients in a 50% isopropyl alcohol/water solution did not induce adequate light protection. The chemically induced ultraviolet light filter in the stratum corneum allowed these patients to change their lives from an "indoor" to an "outdoor" environment.

Current skin symptoms of Yusho patients exposed to high levels of 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorinated dibenzofuran and polychlorinated biphenyls in 1968.

Yusho was a mass food poisoning event due to the ingestion of rice oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and various dioxins and dioxin-like compounds. At its outbreak in 1968, Yusho patients suffered severe skin symptoms. Although the blood concentrations of PCBs and dioxins, especially highly toxic 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorinated dibenzofuran (2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF) remain high in these patients, extensive analysis has not been performed on their current skin symptoms. We categorized and evaluated the specific skin symptoms in Yusho in 2012 by grading their severity using an arbitrary

Update on photodermatoses.

Interactions with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and chromophores in the skin happen on a daily basis. Photodermatoses, which are abnormal responses to UV exposure, can be classified into subgroups based on pathogenesis. This review will discuss the clinical features, pathogenesis, photobiologic evaluation, prognosis and therapies of the most common photodermatoses.

Naproxen-induced pseudoporphyria: appearance of new skin lesions after discontinuation of treatment.

Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are routinely used in the therapy of chronic inflammatory joint diseases in childhood. Recently the NSAID naproxen was recognized to induce pseudoporphyria. This rare photodermatitis is characterized by skin fragility and vesiculation, resulting in shallow scarring. We report 4 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who developed naproxen-induced pseudoporphyria. All children had received naproxen for more than 5 months when pseudoporphyria occurred. A disorder of porphyrin metabolism was excluded by analysis of the urine, serum and erythrocyt
