Salmonella Outbreaks in Low- and Middle-Income Countries over the Last Decade: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Transmission Dynamics, Clinical Outcomes, and Antimicrobial Resistance.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella outbreaks persist as a public health burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet comprehensive synthesis of their epidemiology over the past decade remains limited. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for laboratory-confirmed Salmonella outbreaks in LMICs (1 January 2016-1 January 2026). Random-effects meta-analysis estimated pooled prevalence rates, with statistical heterogeneity quantified using I2 statistic. Given extreme heterogeneity across most outcomes (I2 > 90%), we present individ

Nighttime Cold Stress and Cardiovascular Emergency Hospitalizations: A Time-Series Analysis by Sex and Age in a Subtropical City.

BACKGROUND: Cold temperature can increase cardiovascular risks even in subtropical regions, where infrequent exposure and limited infrastructure may limit cold adaptation. Risks may intensify at night because of declining temperature and reduced thermoregulatory capacity during sleep, yet the impact of nighttime cold exposure remains underexplored. METHODS: A time-series ecological study using quasi-Poisson regression and distributed lag nonlinear models assessed associations between cold exposure and 417 044 emergency hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases, including acute myocardial i

Behavioral Determinants of Lifestyle Modifications Following Metabolic Bariatric Surgery in a Culturally Specific Population: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained healthy behaviors are critical for long-term success after metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS); however, patients from culturally distinct communities may face unique sociocultural and structural barriers to postoperative behavior change. We explored behavioral determinants of lifestyle modifications among women from the Arab society in Israel post-MBS. METHODS: Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women who underwent MBS at a public university-affiliated medical center. Interviews explored participants' experiences of postoperative lifestyle adjus

Label-free urinary protein detection through machine learning analysis of single droplet evaporation patterns.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global public health issue, with a steadily increasing incidence. Urinary protein detection serves as a crucial indicator for the diagnosis, monitoring and management of CKD. However, current methods for urinary protein measurement, such as urine dipstick tests, colorimetric assays, and 24-h total urine protein analysis, have certain limitations that restrict their routine application in CKD screening and follow-up. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a simple, convenient, and rapid diagnostic approach for kidney function assessment. RESU

Posterior Scleral Reinforcement to Prevent Progression of High Myopia.

BACKGROUND: Myopia has become a global public health problem. High myopia is linked to pathologic myopia (PM). As the severity of myopia increases, excessive axial elongation of the globe exerts a biomechanical stretch on the posterior pole, followed by a series of retinopathy which can lead to marked visual impairment. Posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) is the only way that may have the potential to prevent the progression of axial elongation. Some scholars expressed satisfaction with the efficacy and safety of PSR. In contrast, other surgeons had negative conclusions on the outcomes for t

Molecular characterization and phylogenetic relationship of wild type 1 poliovirus strains circulating across Pakistan and Afghanistan bordering areas during 2010-2012.

Pakistan and Afghanistan share a long uncontrolled border with extensive population movement on both sides. Wild poliovirus transmission has never been interrupted in this block due to war against terrorism, poor public health infrastructure, misconceptions about polio vaccines and inadequate immunization activities. All these issues complicate the eradication operations and reinforce the complexity of wiping out poliomyelitis from this region. This study illustrates the origins and routes of cross-border wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) transmission during 2010-2012 between Pakistan and Afghanis…

Mass transit infrastructure and urban health.

Mass transit is a critical infrastructure of urban environments worldwide. The public uses it extensively, with roughly 9 billion mass transit trips occurring annually in the United States alone according to the U.S. Department of Transportation data. Its benefits per traveler include lower emissions of air pollutants and energy usage and high speeds and safety records relative to many other common modes of transportation that contribute to human health and safety. However, mass transit is vulnerable to intrusions that compromise its use and the realization of the important benefits it brings.
