ADHD and ADHD-related neural networks in benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS or rolandic epilepsy) present with a very high level of comorbidity. We aimed to review the existing literature focusing on two aspects: the possible role of epileptic activity in the damage of ADHD-related neural networks and the clinical approach to patients presenting with both conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed using Sapienza Library System and PubMed. The following search terms have been considered: attention networks, ADHD, attention systems,

Diplomats' Mystery Illness and Pulsed Radiofrequency/Microwave Radiation.

Importance: A mystery illness striking U.S. and Canadian diplomats to Cuba (and now China) "has confounded the FBI, the State Department and US intelligence agencies" (Lederman, Weissenstein, & Lee, 2017). Sonic explanations for the so-called health attacks have long dominated media reports, propelled by peculiar sounds heard and auditory symptoms experienced. Sonic mediation was justly rejected by experts. We assessed whether pulsed radiofrequency/microwave radiation (RF/MW) exposure can accommodate reported facts in diplomats, including unusual ones. Observations: (1) Noises: Many diplomats

A neuropsychological assessment of frontal cognitive functions in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is associated with a characteristic behavioural phenotype whose main features are, alongside compulsive hyperphagia, deficits in social behaviour: social withdrawal, temper tantrums, perseverative speech and behaviour, mental rigidity, stereotyped behaviour, impulsiveness, etc. Similar symptoms may also be found in autistic spectrum disorders and lesional pathologies of the frontal lobe. In both cases, such symptoms have been related to dysfunctions in frontal cognitive processes such as attention, working memory and executive functions. This study uses

[Decisional algorithm in extended neoplasms of the hypopharynx and the cervical esophagus].

Hypopharynx reconstruction must deal with restoration of not a simple tubed conduit but a complex arrangement of constrictive and propulsive forces with fine sensory circuits. The chosen surgical approach should guarantee both complete removal of tumor and re-establishement of the two primary functions of the district: first swallowing and then phonation. We retrospectively reviewed data of 67 patients who had undergone oncologic reconstruction of hypopharynx with either pedicled or free flaps at the ENT Department of IRCCS Policlinico S Matteo, University of Pavia, between November 1994 and J

The neurological basis of developmental dyslexia: an overview and working hypothesis.

Five to ten per cent of school-age children fail to learn to read in spite of normal intelligence, adequate environment and educational opportunities. Thus defined, developmental dyslexia (hereafter referred to as dyslexia) is usually considered of constitutional origin, but its actual mechanisms are still mysterious and currently remain the subject of intense research endeavour in various neuroscientific areas and along several theoretical frameworks. This article reviews evidence accumulated to date that favours a dysfunction of neural systems known to participate in the normal acquisition a

Cognitive processing speed improvement after cochlear implantation.

BACKGROUND: Untreated hearing loss has an effect on cognition. It is hypothesized that the additional processing required to compensate for the sensory loss affects the cognitive resources available for other tasks and that this could be mitigated by a hearing device. METHODS: The impact on cognition of cochlear implants (CIs) was tested in 100 subjects, ≥60 years old, with bilateral moderately-severe to profound post linguistic deafness using hearing aids. Data was compared pre and 12 and 18 months after cochlear implantation for the speech spatial qualities questionnaire, Mini Mental State

Awake brain surgery for language mapping in pediatric patients: a single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, benefit, and safety of awake brain surgery (ABS) and intraoperative language mapping in children and adolescents with structural epilepsies. Whereas ABS is an established method to monitor language function in adults intraoperatively, reports of ABS in children are scarce. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of pediatric patients ≤ 18 years of age who underwent ABS and cortical language mapping for supratentorial tumors and nontumoral epileptogenic lesions between 2008 and 2019 was conducted. The authors evaluated the global

A new 'advanced' test of theory of mind: evidence from children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS) (N = 21) to infer physical versus mental states on a new 'advanced' test of theory-of-mind - Stories from Everyday Life. The participants in the AS group were of normal intelligence and were compared with an age-matched control group (N = 20) of normally developing children and adolescents. METHOD: The test materials comprised 26 short stories or 13 pairs of different types of stories. This contextually complex theory-of-mind battery aimed to record the participants' abil

A review of cognitive outcome after hemidecortication in humans.

This review of the effects of hemidecortication in humans has been limited to studies of cognitive outcome published during the last 20 years. More directly than in the case of split-brain patients, the patients reviewed here attest to the remarkable ability of a single hemisphere, whether left or right, to support at least at modest levels a wide range of cognitive functions--from visual perception, through memory and intellectual processes, to language and even speech. In some cases, as has been indicated, the surgical removal of a diseased hemisphere has resulted in improvement of cognitive

Psychiatric illness among the mentally retarded. A swedish population study.

Object--The aim of this investigation was in the first place to study the relation between mental retardation and other mental disturbances. The second aim was to study the frequency of severe and mild mental retardation in an adult Swedish population and to throw some light on the socio-medical situation of the adult mentally retarded. Methods--A primary sample, stratified with respect to population density, was extracted from the population in the age group 20-60 years, resident in Kopparberg County, Sweden, on 1 July 1977. The mildly and severely mentally retarded in this sample were identi

Cortical networks for vision and language in dyslexic and normal children of variable socio-economic status.

In dyslexia, anomalous activations have been described in both left temporo-parietal language cortices and in left ventral visual occipito-temporal cortex. However, the reproducibility, task-dependency, and presence of these brain anomalies in childhood rather than adulthood remain debated. We probed the large-scale organization of ventral visual and spoken language areas in dyslexic children using minimal target-detection tasks that were performed equally well by all groups. In 23 normal and 23 dyslexic 10-year-old children from two different socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds, we compar

Oral rehabilitation after mandibular reconstruction using an osteocutaneous fibula free flap with endosseous implants. Factors affecting the functional outcome in patients with oral cancer.

BACKGROUND: The development of endosseous implants and free vascularized bone grafting has permitted increased possibilities of oromandibular reconstruction in patients with oral cancer. In this study, a concept combining surgical and prosthodontic treatments for mandibular fibula free flap reconstruction after tumor surgery was made based on a classification of bone defects. A follow-up study was performed to evaluate the treatment concept for oral rehabilitation in order to identify possible factors which may influence the functional result. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A follow-up examination inc

Receptive and expressive language characteristics of school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Research investigating language skills in school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate is sparse. Past studies focus on younger populations, lack key comparisons to demographically matched control cohorts or explore language as a component of broader academic skills. Trends of existing studies suggest that affected children may perform at a lower level compared with typically developing peers. AIMS: To examine the receptive and expressive language skills of middle-school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (CLP) and cleft palate only (CP). Addi

Restoration of normal motor control in Parkinson's disease during REM sleep.

Although normal subjects do not move during REM sleep, patients with Parkinson's disease may experience REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). The characteristics of the abnormal REM sleep movements in RBD have, however, not been studied. We interviewed one hundred consecutive non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease and their bed partners using a structured questionnaire assessing the presence of RBD. They rated the quality of movements, voice and facial expression during RBD as being better, equal or worse than in awake ON levodopa condition. Night-time sleep and movements were video-moni

Reconstruction of total maxillectomy defects with preservation of the orbital contents.

Reconstruction after total maxillectomy with preservation of the orbital contents is technically more challenging than when the maxillectomy is combined with orbital exenteration. Reconstruction of such defects should (1) provide support to the orbital contents, (2) obliterate any communication between the orbit and nasopharynx, (3) reconstruct the palatal surface, and (4) achieve facial symmetry and a good aesthetic result. We report our experience in performing reconstructive surgery on 14 patients who had a total maxillectomy and preservation of the orbital contents using nonvascularized bo

Free profunda femoris artery perforator flap as a first-line choice of reconstruction for partial glossectomy defects.

BACKGROUND: Free profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap has recently been brought back for head and neck reconstruction. During the course of 1 year, we performed this procedure for reconstruction of partial glossectomy defects with excellent results. METHODS: From January through December 2015, 21 patients underwent partial glossectomy reconstruction with PAP flaps. Demographics, surgical technique, anatomic variations, success rates, complications, and characteristics are described. Swallowing and speech results after reconstruction are evaluated. RESULTS: No donor-site complications were o
