Is Overnight Fasting before Surgery Too Much or Not Enough? How Basic Aging Research Can Guide Preoperative Nutritional Recommendations to Improve Surgical Outcomes: A Mini-Review.

Dietary restriction (DR) is best known for extending lifespan in experimental model organisms, but also increases resistance to a variety of clinically relevant stressors, including those associated with surgery. Extended periods of DR, lasting months to years, are required for optimal longevity benefits in rodents, but short-term dietary preconditioning (less than 1 week) remarkably protects from acute injury. Here, we discuss recent advances in our understanding of the mechanistic basis of short-term DR and fasting in the context of surgical stress resistance, including upstream amino acid s

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 mitral expression and -1607 1G/2G gene promoter polymorphism in mitral chordae tendinae rupture.

Understanding the pathogenesis of mitral chordae tendinae rupture (MCTR) is essential for identification of risk factors. Mitral matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) triggers the signal cascade that instigates cardiac fibrosis, which may be a predisposing factor in MCTR. We investigated associations among MMP1 expression, MMP1 -1607 1G/2G polymorphism and mitral chordae tendinae rupture (MCTR). This study enrolled 185 patients (group A) receiving mitral valve replacement. Group A included 65 patients with MCTR and 120 controls without MCTR. MMP1 was assessed on a semiquantitative scale (0-3) by immu

Zinc is the modulator of the calcium-dependent activation of post-translationally acting thiol-enzymes in autoimmune diseases.

UNLABELLED: Post-translational modifications of proteins can generate antigenic conformations that may cause autoimmune diseases in persons with specific HLA-haplotypes. Monocytes and macrophages, attracted to an inflamed site, can release post-translationally acting enzymes, such as transglutaminases and peptidylarginine deiminases. In vivo, the activation of these enzymes is crucial for the further course of event. Our hypothesis is that zinc modulates the activation of these calcium-dependent thiol-enzymes. Persons with celiac disease carry antibodies against deamidated dietary gluten and a

Lasing emission spectroscopy for bioanalytics and biomedicine.

Lasing spectroscopy (LS) is emerging as a powerful extension of conventional fluorescence methods for highly sensitive bioanalytical detection. By exploiting stimulated emission and optical feedback mechanisms, LS generates narrow spectral linewidths, threshold-dependent emission, and highly directional radiation, enabling enhanced signal-to-noise ratios and improved sensitivity compared with traditional fluorescence spectroscopy. In bioanalytical systems, subtle molecular events such as biomolecular binding, conformational transitions, or local refractive-index changes can significantly modif

Carbon dots in cancer therapy: a novel approach to targeted drug delivery and reduced toxicity in gallbladder cancer.

Biliary tract cancers (BTCs), including cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma, are highly aggressive malignancies associated with poor prognosis, late diagnosis, and limited therapeutic options. Conventional chemotherapy offers only modest survival benefits because of inadequate tumor selectivity, rapid systemic clearance, dose-limiting toxicity, and the emergence of chemoresistance. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as promising nanotheranostic agents owing to their ultrasmall size, tunable photoluminescence, excellent aqueous dispersibility, biocompatibility, and versatile surfa
