Correlation between serum vitamin D level and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of dizziness in the general population. BPPV is known to be closely related to the serum vitamin D level. This study aimed to examine the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and BPPV recurrence. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 50 patients diagnosed with posterior and lateral canal BPPV. The diagnosis of BPPV was based on the finding of vertigo and nystagmus induced by certain head positions (The Dix-Hallpike maneuver and head roll tests). The patients were classified into BPPV recurr

Craniocentric body-sway responses to 500 Hz bone-conducted tones in man.

Whole-body responses evoked by bone-conducted sound, a stimulus known to activate vestibular afferents, were recorded in standing subjects deprived of vision. With the head facing forward, unilateral mastoid vibration (500 Hz, 2 s, 136 dB force level) produced an oblique body sway with a consistent lateral component away from the stimulated ear and an average forward component. The side of stimulation had a powerful influence on the direction but not the magnitude of sway. Individuals' mean response directions were significantly clustered between subjects, as well as within subjects for 12 of

Management of rectovestibular fistula in infants and children: Our experience and insights regarding primary versus staged anorectoplasty.

Vestibular fistula is the most common anorectal malformation in females. Traditionally managed with a staged posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) following colostomy, concerns remain regarding colostomy-related morbidity. Intra-operative, early, and late postoperative complications, and functional outcomes (voluntary bowel movements, soiling, and constipation) were compared between secondary PSARP (after colostomy) and primary PSARP (without) using appropriate statistical tests. Functional outcomes were comparable, with >90% achieving voluntary bowel movements. Thus, we conclude that prim

Bilateral loss of vestibular function: clinical findings in 53 patients.

The clinical presentations and aetiologies of a series of 53 cases of bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) seen by the authors over a decade were evaluated by retrospective review of the medical records. Thirty-nine per cent of patients had associated neurological disease; 13% had a progressive cerebellar syndrome with disabling gait ataxia, abnormal eye movements and cerebellar atrophy on neuro-imaging. BVF was usually unsuspected. Nine per cent had cranial or peripheral neuropathies and in this group there was no abnormality of brain stem/cerebellar oculomotor function, but hearing loss was co

The effect of cochlear implants on vestibular-evoked myogenic potential responses and postural stability.

OBJECTIVE: Current spread by electrical stimulation via inserted cochlear implant (CI) electrodes and the consequential increase in sound input can affect the equilibrium of patients. The aim of the present study was to clarify the effect of CIs on the equilibrium of patients through cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) testing and static stabilometry performed with the CIs turned on (CI-on) and off (CI-off). METHODS: This prospective study included nine adult patients who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation surgery at our institution. cVEMP testing and stabilometry we

A prospective study of pelvic floor physical therapy: pain and psychosexual outcomes in provoked vestibulodynia.

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that increased tension in the pelvic floor muscles of women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD, the most common form of chronic vulvar pain) may play an important role in maintaining and exacerbating their pain. However, no prospective studies of pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) for PVD have been carried out. AIM: This study prospectively examined the effectiveness of a PFPT intervention in treating the pain and sexual and psychological components of PVD, and determined predictors of greater treatment success. METHODS: Thirteen women with PVD completed eigh

The semicircular canal function is preserved with little impact on falls in patients with mild Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Postural instability is a cardinal symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), which suggests the vestibular system may be affected in PD. This study aimed to determine whether vestibular dysfunction is associated with the risk of falls in PD. METHODS: We prospectively recruited patients with de-novo PD at a tertiary medical center between December 2019 and March 2023. During initial assessment, each patient was queried about falls within the preceding year. All patients underwent evaluation of video head-impulse tests (video-HITs), motion analysis, mini-mental state examination (MMSE)

The brain's duck test in phantom percepts: Multisensory congruence in neuropathic pain and tinnitus.

Chronic neuropathic pain and chronic tinnitus have been likened to phantom percepts, in which a complete or partial sensory deafferentation results in a filling in of the missing information derived from memory. 150 participants, 50 with tinnitus, 50 with chronic pain and 50 healthy controls underwent a resting state EEG. Source localized current density is recorded from all the sensory cortices (olfactory, gustatory, somatosensory, auditory, vestibular, visual) as well as the parahippocampal area. Functional connectivity by means of lagged phase synchronization is also computed between these
