The Relationship between Dietary Pattern and Bone Mass in School-Age Children.

Early bone accrual significantly influences adult bone health and osteoporosis incidence. We aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns (DPs), bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in school-age children in China. Children aged six-nine years (n = 465) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. DPs were identified by principal component factor analysis. Total body (TB) and total body less head (TBLH) BMC and BMD were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Five DPs were identified. After adjustment for covariates, multiple linear regression an

The association of bone mineral density Z-score with the early postoperative remission and characteristics of bone mineral loss in patients with Cushing's disease: a retrospective study.

AIM: To investigate the association of bone mineral density (BMD) Z-scores with early-postoperative remission rate and clinical parameters in patients with Cushing's disease (CD). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the records of patients diagnosed with CD. After the exclusion of 230 patients, 87 CD patients were finally enrolled. BMD was determined by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine 1-4 (L1-4) and left femur. Early-postoperative remission was defined as a morning cortisol concentration on the first day after surgery of less than 5 μg/dL. The diagnosis of BMD "be

Changes in bone mineral density in Down syndrome individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Data evaluating changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in Down syndrome (DS) individuals remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to better understand associations between BMD and DS. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up until 1st January 2021 was conducted. We used the keywords "bone mineral density" and "Down Syndrome." Fifteen studies were included. Overall, our results showed a significant decrease in BMD of total body (TB BMD) [MD =  - 0.18; 95% CI (- 0.23 and - 0.12), P < 0.00001, I2 = 89%

Assessment of Osteoporosis and Fracture Risk in Mastocytosis within a North American Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Systemic mastocytosis (SM), a clonal expansion of mast cells affecting multiple organs including the skeletal system, puts patients at risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Various aspects of skeletal disease in SM have been reported among European cohorts. OBJECTIVE: To determine fracture prevalence and risk predictors in SM in a North American (NA) cohort and compare findings with studies of other populations. METHODS: Fifty patients, aged 25-74 years, were grouped based on fracture type and history. Data collected included laboratory findings and radiographic markers such as se

Advanced ankylosing spondylitis: a multisite, multimodality densitometric analysis for investigation of bone loss in the axial and appendicular skeleton.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a bias in bone mineral density measurements among major densitometric techniques across multiple skeletal sites. METHODS: In 25 advanced ankylosing spondylitis patients, bone mineral density measurements were acquired in the lumbar spine, the hip, and the forearm. RESULTS: In total, 60% of patients had a bone mineral density Z-score of -2 or less at one or more skeletal sites. Dedicated loss of cortical bone was identified at the distal forearm (60% of patients). Differences in bone mineral density measurements across all densit

Bone health in adolescence.

Adolescence is a fundamental period for the formation of the skeleton, because is the stage in which bones grow more in both size and strength, laying a solid foundation for the future health of the skeleton. Any condition interfering with optimal peak bone mass accrual can increase fracture risk later in life. Up to 80% of peak bone mass is genetically determined while the remaining 20% is modulated by environmental factors that, if deleterious, may result in low bone mineral density (BMD) and an increased risk of fracture. The preferred test to assess bone health is dual-energy x-ray absorpt

DXA and pQCT derived parameters in Indian children with beta thalassemia major - A case controlled study.

Children with beta thalassemia major (BTM) are known to have reduced bone mass which increases incidence of non-traumatic fractures. Few studies have assessed prevalence of fractures and bone health in underprivileged children with BTM. Our objectives were to 1) determine prevalence of fractures in underprivileged Indian children with BTM, 2) assess size corrected bone density and bone geometry using Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computerized tomography (pQCT) in these children and healthy controls 3) determine predictors of fractures in children with BTM 4) compa

Evaluation of Clinical and Radiographic Parameters as Dental Indicators for Postmenopausal Osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: In the early stages, osteoporosis is relatively a silent disease characterised by low bone density with microarchitectural deterioration of the bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between age, body mass index, oral signs, and osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included postmenopausal women who were divided into two groups of subjects. The osteoporotic group comprised 30 patients with osteoporosis who were diagnosed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the non-osteopo

Bone mineral density is decreased in fibromyalgia syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Previous studies have shown that fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is associated with low level of physical activity and exercise, which may lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis. However, studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in fibromyalgia have shown conflicting results. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to better characterize the association between FMS and BMD. A comprehensive search of the databases MEDLINE and EMBASE was performed from inception through May 2016. The inclusion criterion was the observational studies' assessment of the association between fibromyalgi

Current Controversies in the Management of Myeloma Bone Disease.

Recent significant advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma have resulted in an improvement in median overall survival from 4.6 years, for patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2005, to 6.1 years, for those diagnosed between 2006 and 2010 (Kumar et al., 2014). However, myeloma bone lesions persist in the absence of active disease and continue to be frequent and significant causes of patient morbidity and contribute to mortality. While bisphosphonate therapy in combination with anti-myeloma therapy remains the cornerstone of skeletal disease management in myeloma, open questions regarding th

Effects of gastric bypass surgery on glucose absorption and metabolism during a mixed meal in glucose-tolerant individuals.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes, but also changes the glucose profile in response to a meal in glucose-tolerant individuals. We hypothesised that the driving force for the changed postprandial glucose profiles after RYGB is rapid entry of glucose into the systemic circulation due to modified gastrointestinal anatomy, causing hypersecretion of insulin and other hormones influencing glucose disappearance and endogenous glucose production. METHODS: We determined glucose absorption and metabolism and the rate of

Osteopenia and osteoporosis in epidermolysis bullosa.

Patients with the more severe forms of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) are at risk of developing osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures. The cause is likely to be multifactorial and includes reduced mobility, a generally proinflammatory state, poor nutrition and hormonal factors. Monitoring this group with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans and plain radiographs is necessary to detect these changes. Data are lacking about the optimal approach to managing poor bone health in EB, although it seems that encouraging mobility, supplementation of calcium and vitamin D where necessary, with the

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for histologic bone sections.

In fundamental osteoporosis research precise and accurate assessment of the mineral quantity in histological bone sections is of particular importance when studying the local effects of implants releasing bone modulating agents. A potentially useful technique to estimate the bone mineral density (BMD) is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A highly collimated (0.13 mm) Hologic 2000 with a line spacing and point resolution of 0.13 mm was used. The mineral content was measured in regions of 3.1 mm(2). A ceramic hydroxyapatite (CHA) phantom was developed as a reference standard. The phantom w

[Changes in bone mass with age. Transversal study on a female population using photon densitometry].

In order to evaluate the age-related changes of the bone mineral content (BMC), 281 clinically healthy women (20-80 year old) underwent single photon abosorptiometry (SPA) on the distal third of the radius (where there is a prevalence of cortical bone); 161 subjects of this group were examined also by dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) of the lumbar tract of the spine (L2-L4) (trabecular bone). The relationship of trabecular BMC with age is described by a cubic polynomial regression (r = 0.46; p less than 0.0001) that shows an increase in BMC until 31 years of age followed by a decrease with a m

New methods for identifying "at risk" patients for osteoporosis.

Bone loss was determined in 178 women in the early postmenopausal period by photon absorptiometry measurement of forearm bone mineral content (BMC) every three months for two years. With a sequential cut-off technique, the results of a single determination of body fat mass, urinary calcium and hydroxyproline, and serum alkaline phosphatase, carried out at the first examination, correctly identified 79% of "fast bone losers" (bone loss greater than 3% annually) and 78% of "slow bone losers". The simple biochemical screening procedure was hereafter tested in a new group of 70 early postmenopausa
