Normal and abnormal intestinal absorption by humans.

Adults eating a Western diet digest and absorb ingested food containing approximately 100 g fat, 350 g carbohydrate, and 75 g protein daily. Normal fat absorption requires adequate gastric, pancreatic, liver-biliary, mucosal, and lymphatic function. Carbohydrate and protein absorption is much less dependent on liver-biliary and lymphatic function. The intestine has a large reserve capacity for digestion and absorption of nutrients which is due to both excess function and to adaptive changes which increase function in one segment of the digestive-absorptive system when it is decreased or lost i…

Iron absorption in patients with dermatitis herpertiformis.

Iron absorption has been studied in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). Four patients out of 20 had iron deficiency, defined as absence of or only traces of haemosiderin in bone marrow smears. These four had adequate absorption of ferrous iron. The iron deficiency in at least 3 of them was ascribed to increased iron loss. The results indicate that, although having a mild to moderate malabsorption syndrome, DH patients can be expected to exhibit adequate absorption of orally administered iron. Explanations of a negative iron balance other than defective absorption should therefore be s…

Intestinal absorption of L-tryptophan in scleroderma.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the intestinal absorption of L-tryptophan and to assess the absorptive function of the intestine in scleroderma. The oral L-tryptophan loading test was performed in 31 cases of systemic scleroderma (progressive systemic sclerosis, PSS) and 3 cases of localized scleroderma. Serum levels of tryptophan and urinary excretion of indole-acetic acid (IAA) and indican (IS) were determined in order to assess intestinal absorption of tryptophan. In 10 cases the D-xylose test and in 4 cases Schilling's test was also performed. Furthermore, in vitro binding o…

Calcium absorption as a function of calcium intake.

The relationships between the amount of calcium absorbed and the quantity ingested was evaluated in 180 adult humans. Absorption was measured from the concentration ratio of concurrently administered oral and intravenous calcium isotopes. Intake ranged from 0.163 to 7.48 Gm. Ca per day. In 14 subjects, intakes were artificially elevated for purposes of this study. All others were studied at their usual intake levels. Absorption (Ca Abs) was found to follow a curvillnear relationship with intake (Ca-D), and was characterized by the following equation: Ca Abs equals 0.1541 - Ca-D plus 0.3127[exp…

Carbohydrate digestion and absorption studies in the horse.

The ability of the horse to digest and absorb soluble carbohydrates was assessed using a series of oral disaccharide tolerance tests followed in the same animals by tolerance tests with the constituent monosaccharides. In horses older than three years, lactose did not produce an increase in the plasma glucose levels but induced the passing of soft faeces, indicating that adult horses are lactose intolerant. Horses of all ages could absorb the glucose: galactose mixture without any change in the faeces. The tolerance is due to a failure to hydrolyse lactose and does not involve the monosacchari

Blood lead and haemoglobin in lead absorption.

In an analysis of blood lead and haemoglobin estimations from 655 lead workers, there was no indication of any change in the haemoglobin until the blood lead exceeded 110 μg./100 ml.; the slight fall at higher levels of blood lead was not significant at the 5% level of confidence. Sixty-seven men who had blood leads greater than 90 μg./100 ml. were examined clinically. One had a low haemoglobin but none had symptoms or signs that were likely to be due to lead absorption. A further 18 men had haemoglobins of 89% (13 g./100 ml.) or less. None was thought to be low due to lead absorption. The abs…
