An Account of Roman Surgical Treatments for Ozena: Historical Review.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze a first-century Roman account of surgery for ozena-a tetrad of nasal crusting, ulceration, bony involvement, and foul odor-with a focus on historical context, etymology, and surgical management. DATA SOURCES: This historical review draws from the authors' translation of De Medicina. Primary sources detailing Roman surgical instruments from the House of the Surgeon in Pompeii, as well as secondary sources of surgical techniques, were utilized. REVIEW METHODS: An in-depth review of Celsus' descriptions of surgical techniques for ozena was conducted using independent trans

Qualitative analysis of written accounts of functional/dissociative seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective experiences of functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) are important for diagnosis and treatment formulation. This study aims to improve the symptomatological understanding of these seizures by analysing written narratives provided by authors with personal FDS experience. METHODS: Descriptions of FDS were extracted from contributions to the book "In Our Words: Personal Accounts of Living with Non-Epileptic Seizures". Immediately preictal, ictal or postictal seizure symptoms were identified and subjected to summative content analysis. Themes and subthemes were derived indu

A meta-analytical account of the functional lateralization of the reading network.

The observation that the neural correlates of reading are left-lateralized is ubiquitous in the cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychological literature. Still, reading is served by a constellation of neural units, and the extent to which these units are consistently left-lateralized is unclear. In this regard, the functional lateralization of the fusiform gyrus is of particular interest, by virtue of its hypothesized role as a "visual word form area". A quantitative Activation Likelihood Estimation meta-analysis was conducted on activation foci from 35 experiments investigating silent reading

Can neurocognitive performance account for dimensional paranoid ideation?

OBJECTIVE: Paranoid ideation underlies numerous psychological disorders and has debilitating effects on daily life. Deficits in neurocognition are highlighted as a contributing factor to paranoid-related disorders, but the impact on the symptom-level experience of paranoid ideation is unclear. This study aimed to employ a dimensional approach to understand the association between neurocognition and the severity and presence of paranoid ideation. METHODS: 400 participants, representative of the general population of the USA, completed an online questionnaire consisting of the Brief Symptom Inv

Does a General "G Factor" Best Account for Hypnotizability?

The lead article in this issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (IJCEH), entitled, "Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale in a Clinical Population", reports on a factor analysis of hypnotizability scores in a clinical population of postmenopausal women. The results found evidence for a general hypnotizability latent variable. This finding suggests a general "G factor" may best account for hypnotizability. More research is needed, however, if confirmed in future research would lead to a new understanding of hypnotizability as having a

A unified neural account of contextual and individual differences in altruism.

Altruism is critical for cooperation and productivity in human societies but is known to vary strongly across contexts and individuals. The origin of these differences is largely unknown, but may in principle reflect variations in different neurocognitive processes that temporally unfold during altruistic decision making (ranging from initial perceptual processing via value computations to final integrative choice mechanisms). Here, we elucidate the neural origins of individual and contextual differences in altruism by examining altruistic choices in different inequality contexts with computat

A brief account on ocular graft versus host disease.

The incidence of ocular graft versus host disease (oGVHD) is rising due to the increasing numbers of bone marrow transplantations for various hematologic malignancies and non-malignant indications. The ophthalmic aspect of graft versus host disease (GVHD) still requires much understanding. We carried out a PubMed search of all articles using the terms "oGVHD," "dry eye + hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)," "acute GVHD," and "Chronic GVHD." The review mainly focuses on the existing lacunae in terms of diagnostic criteria. Diagnosis of ocular involvement in GVHD follows the criteria

Can working memory account for EMDR efficacy in PTSD?

BACKGROUND: Although eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of PTSD for years, it remains controversial due to the lack of understanding of its mechanisms of action. We examined whether the working memory (WM) hypothesis -the competition for limited WM resources induced by the dual task attenuates the vividness and emotionality of the traumatic memory - would provide an explanation for the beneficial effect induced by bilateral stimulation. METHODS: We followed the Prisma guidelines and identified 11 articles categorized in two typ

Along the fringes of Agency: neurodevelopmental account of the obsessive mind.

The experiential core of the obsessive mind rests on subtle, primary mental phenomena (such as obsessions and so called "sensory phenomena") which precede and trigger behavioral compulsions. Converging evidence supports a possible pathophysiological role for altered corollary discharge (phenotypically expressed in sensorimotor symptoms and contributing to a reduced Sense of Agency [SoA]), in the neurodevelopment of obsessions and "sensory phenomena." In phenomenological terms, "sensory phenomena" may represent the subjective experiential resonance of an individual history of persistent inaccur

Are Multiple Chemosensory Systems Accountable for COVID-19 Outcome?

Chemosensory systems (olfaction, taste, trigeminus nerve, solitary chemoreceptor cells, neuroendocrine pulmonary cells, and carotid body, etc.) detect molecules outside or inside our body and may share common molecular markers. In addition to the impairment of taste and olfaction, the detection of the internal chemical environment may also be incapacitated by COVID-19. If this is the case, different consequences can be expected. (1) In some patients, hypoxia does not trigger distressing dyspnea ("silent" hypoxia): Long-term follow-up may determine whether silent hypoxia is related to malfuncti

Adiponectin accounts for gender differences in hepatocellular carcinoma incidence.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer type and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death. This cancer appears with higher incidence in men and during obesity; however, the specific mechanisms underlying this correlation are unknown. Adipose tissue, a key organ in metabolic syndrome, shows evident gender disparities in the production of adipokines. Levels of the important adipokine adiponectin decrease in men during puberty, as well as in the obese state. Here, we show that this decrease in adiponectin levels is responsible for the increased liver cancer risk in

Biographical suspension and liminality of Self in accounts of severe sciatica.

Sciatica is a common form of low back pain (LBP) that has been identified as distinct both in terms of the persistence and severity of symptoms. Little research has explored individual experiences of sciatica, and none focuses on individuals with the most severe, long-lasting symptoms who may experience the most profound impact. This paper addresses this gap through proposing a theoretical framework for understanding such experiences, that of biographical suspension as a form of liminality of Self. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals with severe sciatic symptoms b

Reevaluating the Sensory Account of Visual Working Memory Storage.

Recent human fMRI pattern-decoding studies have highlighted the involvement of sensory areas in visual working memory (VWM) tasks and argue for a sensory account of VWM storage. In this review, evidence is examined from human behavior, fMRI decoding, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies, as well as from monkey neurophysiology studies. Contrary to the prevalent view, the available evidence provides little support for the sensory account of VWM storage. Instead, when the ability to resist distraction and the existence of top-down feedback are taken into account, VWM-related activi

An account of evolutionary specialization: the AbcR small RNAs in the Rhizobiales.

The AbcR small RNAs (sRNAs) are a fascinating example of two highly conserved sRNAs that differ tremendously at the functional level among organisms. From their transcriptional activation to their regulatory capabilities, the AbcR sRNAs exhibit varying characteristics in three well-studied bacteria belonging to the Rhizobiales order: the plant symbiont Sinorhizobium meliloti, the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and the animal pathogen Brucella abortus. This review outlines the similarities and differences of the AbcR sRNAs between each of these organisms, and discusses reasons as to

Representational Account of Memory: Insights from Aging and Synesthesia.

The representational account of memory envisages perception and memory to be on a continuum rather than in discretely divided brain systems [Bussey, T. J., & Saksida, L. M. Memory, perception, and the ventral visual-perirhinal-hippocampal stream: Thinking outside of the boxes. Hippocampus, 17, 898-908, 2007]. We tested this account using a novel between-group design with young grapheme-color synesthetes, older adults, and young controls. We investigated how the disparate sensory-perceptual abilities between these groups translated into associative memory performance for visual stimuli that do

An uncertain risk: the World Health Organization's account of H1N1.

Scientific uncertainty is fundamental to the management of contemporary global risks. In 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the start of the H1N1 Influenza Pandemic. This declaration signified the risk posed by the spread of the H1N1 virus, and in turn precipitated a range of actions by global public health actors. This article analyzes the WHO's public representation of risk and examines the centrality of scientific uncertainty in the case of H1N1. It argues that the WHO's risk narrative reflected the context of scientific uncertainty in which it was working. The WHO argued th

John Hunter's (1728-1793) account of venereal diseases.

John Hunter's work included description of the nature of digestion, child development, role of the lymphatic system and proof that the maternal and foetal blood supplies are separate. His contribution to the understanding of venereal diseases is reviewed. Hunter's argument of the unitary nature of venereal diseases is examined and the progress he made in diagnosis and management is discussed.
