Migrant Background Youth and Hazardous Drinking: Drinking to Fit Into Australian Society?

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we proposed that migrant youth might have acculturation reasons to drink alcohol and explored the role of acculturative gap conflict and perceived drinking culture in predicting hazardous drinking. We examined proximal acculturation reasons for drinking in terms of drinking to fit into Australian culture and drinking to cope with parental/community expectations. METHODS: We conducted an online survey with 470 participants (age range 18-25 years). Data from those who reported having tried alcohol (n = 383; 65% female, 71% born in Australia) were analysed. We groupe…

Maternal blood pressure and birth weight associations in U.S.-born and foreign-born Latinas.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that acculturating to the United States is detrimental for immigrants' health. Consistent with this pattern, higher levels of U.S. acculturation among Latina-American women have been associated with giving birth to lower birth weight babies. The mechanisms that shape this shift in pregnancy health are not clear, but researchers have begun to consider the role of physiological systems that are sensitive to social experience. The present study examined the association of cultural orientation with blood pressure (BP) trajectories over the course of pregnancy. METHOD…

Barriers to condom use and needle cleaning among impoverished minority female injection drug users and partners of injection drug users.

This study was undertaken to describe sexual behaviors and drug use and other factors that inhibit condom use and needle cleaning among impoverished women who are injection drug users (IDUs) or sexual partners of IDUs. This study also investigated whether risky sexual behavior or barriers to risk reduction differ with ethnicity and level of acculturation. Survey instruments to assess drug and sexual activity were administered to 378 African American and Latina women recruited primarily from homeless shelters and drug recovery programs. The most commonly cited barriers to condom use were belief…

Modelling the impact of migration on FGM/C prevalence and risk in immigrant and diaspora populations.

Previous estimates of the number of women and girls impacted by female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) in the United States (US) failed to account for the impact of migration and acculturation. Similar studies in Europe applied a standard factor to estimate the impact across the entire immigrant population. Several of the resultant European estimates offered two scenarios: no impact, in which prevalence remained unaffected by migration and acculturation, and partial impact, in which risk was assumed to drop by 50% for native-born children. Each of these previous studies was based on ada…

The relationship between social and cultural factors and mental health outcomes among middle-aged and older Latino and Hispanic immigrants.

The present study investigated the prevalence of exposure to traumatic events, and the relationship between trauma, acculturative stress, and protective social and cultural factors on mental health outcomes among aging Latino and Hispanic immigrants. In this cross-sectional study, 80 middle-aged and older (M = 54 years, SD = 7) Latino or Hispanic immigrants (51% male) living in the United States completed a series of questionnaires in Spanish. We performed multiple regression analyses to examine risk and protective factors for mental health outcomes. The results indicated that 86% of our parti

Stress burden, drug dependence and the nativity paradox among U.S. Hispanics.

It seems well established that exposure to social stress, including acculturation stress, increases risk for psychiatric and substance problems, and that the disadvantaged experience higher levels of such exposure. Such evidence points to the expectation that immigrant minority groups must be at elevated risk relative to their native-born counterparts. That the opposite appears to be true for various immigrant groups within the U.S. constitutes what has been referred to as the nativity health paradox. This paper examines the association between nativity and drug dependence among the distinctiv…

Between heritage and belonging: Cultural identity reconstruction among Malaysian Chinese across generations.

Understanding how minority communities sustain cultural identity across generations remains a central concern in social psychology and cultural studies. This study addresses this issue by examining the Malaysian Chinese community through the lens of social and psychological processes. Guided by Social Identity Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory, the research investigates whether membership esteem, private collective self-esteem, public collective self-esteem, and identity importance are associated with cultural identity, and whether identity confusion and acculturation difficulty mediate t…

Correlates of illicit drug use in Karen villages in Northern Thailand.

A study was conducted in 31 Karen tribal villages in Northern Thailand in 1999-2000 to address the question of why some villages have a relatively high prevalence of illicit drug use compared with others? Data were gathered from village leaders, residents, and through observations by field workers and the researchers, and included demographic, economic, and infrastructure development, and social and acculturation measures. Overall, few village-level variables were related significantly to drug use in the villages; those that were included: 1) better access to elementary education reported by "…

Increasing Assimilation Associated With Slower Reductions in Alcohol Use Among Latina Young Adults Soon After Immigration.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how rates of change in acculturation processes correlated with changes in alcohol use frequency and quantity among young adult Latina women after they immigrated to the United States. METHOD: Using univariate and parallel process latent growth modeling, we examined 3-year trajectories of alcohol frequency and quantity and two types of acculturation processes among 530 foreign-born, young adult Latina women (ages 18-23) during their initial years in the United States. The acculturation processes were enculturation (the retention or adoption of Latinx cultural beliefs…

The roles of ethnicity and culture in the development of eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction: a meta-analytic review.

This meta-analysis involved 35 studies examining eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction in white and non-white populations and the role of acculturation in the development of eating-related psychopathology. While the role of acculturation in predisposing non-whites to eating disorders remains to be determined, mean effect sizes indicate that whites report more eating disturbance than non-whites. Differences are greatest when studies compare black and white college samples on measures of subclinical eating pathology, like dietary restraint, ideal body shape, and body dissatisfaction. They …
