Anabaena azotica FACHB-118 and Anabaena sp. CH1, heterocystous cyanobacteria isolated from Chinese and Taiwanese rice fields, expressed vanadium-containing nitrogenase when under molybdenum deficiency. Exposing nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) to dissolved sulfide species improves its performance as a remediation agent. However, the impacts of sulfur dose and sulfidation time on morphology, sulfur content, reactivity, and selectivity of the resulting sulfidized NZVI (SNZVI) have not been systematically evaluated. A process for 3-fold scaffold diversification is achieved via ruthenium-catalyzed oxidative alkynylation of commercially available oxetanols, azetidinols and bicyclopentanols to form α,β-acetylenic ketones (ynones), which are subsequently converted to oxetane-, azetidine- and bicyclopentane-bearing pyrazoles, isoxazoles and pyrimidines. A one-pot oxidative alkynylation-condensation protocol that directly converts azetidinols to azetidine-substituted pyrazoles or pyrimidines is demonstrated.

A case of crush injury to the lower extremities of an ironworker involved in the demolition of a bridge is presented. Extrication of the entrapped limbs was complicated by weakening of the bridge support due to acetylene torch cutting. After 3 hours the decision was made to complete the traumatic disarticulation of the right knee on site. Essential elements in the successful completion of such field intervention are presented and the unusual features of the case are emphasized.

Cytochrome P450-dependent enzymes from wheat catalyze the oxidation of endogenous compounds (lauric and oleic acids) and of several herbicides (diclofop, chlortoluron, bentazon). A synthetic approach to the C17-benzene ansamycins via metal catalyzed C-C coupling is described. Key bond formations include direct iridium catalyzed carbonyl crotylation from the alcohol oxidation level followed by chelation-controlled Sakurai-Seyferth dienylation to form the stereotriad, which is attached to the arene via Suzuki cross-coupling. The diene-containing carboxylic acid is prepared using rhodium catalyzed acetylene-aldehyde reductive C-C coupling mediated by gaseous hydrogen. Finally, ring-closing metathesis delivers the cytotrienin core.

The one-pot synthesis of diphenylacetylene by the reaction of methyl benzoate with 1-(benzylsulfonyl)-3,5-di(trifluoromethyl)benzene was developed. The combination of LiN(SiMe3)2 and KN(SiMe3)2 is key to promoting the reaction. Simply combining methyl benzoate, 1-(benzylsulfonyl)-3,5-di(trifluoromethyl)benzene, LiN(SiMe3)2, and KN(SiMe3)2 can produce a variety of diaryl acetylenes (28 examples, 18-70% yields).
