Rudimentary eyes of squamate fossorial reptiles (amphisbaenia and serpentes).

The rudimentary characteristic of the eyes of fossorial animals raises some questions regarding its evolution and functionality. Would these eyes result from atrophy or from stagnated development? How would its visual function work? Anatomical investigations of these organs are the fundamental preamble to answer those questions, which are still little explored by the literature. In this article we have studied anatomical aspects of the eyes of three species of fossorial reptiles, within the suborder Amphisbaena (Amphisbaena alba, Amphisbaena mertensi, Leposternon infraorbitale), as well as a s

Genesis of multipeaked waves of the esophagus: repetitive contractions or motion artifact?

Multipeaked waves (MPW) in the distal esophagus occur frequently in patients with esophageal spastic motor disorders and diabetes mellitus and are thought to represent repetitive esophageal contractions. We aimed to investigate whether the relative motion between a stationary pressure sensor and contracted peristaltic esophageal segment that moves with respiration leads to the formation of MPW. We mathematically modeled the effect of relative movement between a moving pressure segment and a fixed pressure sensor on the pressure waveform morphology. We conducted retrospective analysis of 100 sw

Why does the yellow-eyed Ensatina have yellow eyes? Batesian mimicry of Pacific newts (genus Taricha) by the salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii xanthoptica.

Color patterns commonly vary geographically within species, but it is rare that such variation corresponds with divergent antipredator strategies. The polymorphic salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii, however, may represent such a case. In this species, most subspecies are cryptically colored, whereas E. e. xanthoptica, the Yellow eyed ensatina, is hypothesized to be an aposematic mimic of highly toxic Pacific newts (genus Taricha). To test the mimicry hypothesis, we conducted feeding trials using Western Scrub-Jays, Aphelocoma californica. In every feeding trial, we found that jays, following pr

Marginal adaptation of the Concept inlay system.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the fit of the Concept inlay system in three clinically relevant cavity preparations (an occlusal, MO and MOD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The processed inlays were adjusted as needed and seated on master dies. The greatest marginal discrepancy occurring along each margin was recorded and evaluated. RESULTS: The majority of the margins exhibited gaps in the range of 20-45 microns (statistically insignificant) with the exception of the distal margin of the MO which averaged approximately 80 microns and the buccal and lingual margins of the MOD which were approximately 70 micr

Motion sickness: acquisition and retention of adaptation effects compared in three motion environments.

A sharp distinction should be made between symptoms of motion-sickness per se and phenomena inferred from the symptomatology, which include rates of acquisition and decay of adaptation effects. Foreknowledge of these "derived phenomena" are valuable if it can be shown that they hold true for virtually any motion environment. Recently, we have developed a sudden-stop vestibulovisual interaction test for measuring susceptibility to motion sickness (1). The test procedure involves four successive assessments that provide not only an index of susceptibility to motion sickness but also the rates of

Hormonal signaling in glioblastoma: emerging roles in stemness and tumor plasticity.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is characterized by pronounced cell-state plasticity and functional heterogeneity, which drive therapeutic resistance, tumor recurrence, and disease evolution. Although these processes have traditionally been viewed through a predominantly genomic perspective, emerging evidence identifies endocrine signaling as a critical regulator of glioblastoma cell states. In this review, we propose that hormones function not as independent signaling pathways or merely as promoters of tumor growth, but as systemic regulators that integrate physiological and microenvironmental signals to

Theranostics in Radiation Medicine: Integrating Radiopharmaceutical Therapy and External-Beam Radiotherapy.

Theranostics has transformed nuclear medicine from an imaging-focused discipline into a data-rich radiation medicine platform in which target expression, pharmacokinetics, tumor dose, and response can be measured in the same patient. This critical narrative review evaluates patient-specific integration of radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) with external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT), with emphasis on quantitative imaging, absorbed-dose estimation, spatial registration, biological interpretation, adaptation thresholds, and reporting. We performed a targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE, ClinicalTrials.go

Density Modulations in Active Colloidal Systems through Orthogonal Propulsion Control and Sensory Delays.

Recent advancements in active colloidal systems aim to mimic key characteristics of biological microswimmers, particularly their adaptive motility in response to environmental changes. While many approaches rely on externally imposing a variable propulsive force, achieving true autonomous and self-regulating adaptation to the environment remains limited. In this study, we take a step in this direction and develop Janus microswimmers driven by electrohydrodynamic flows that autonomously adjust their propulsion dynamics in response to varying illumination and exposure to chemical agents. Our Jan

Adaptation in the Avian Middle Ear-The Columellar Annular Ligament in Aquatic and Diving Birds.

The effective detection of environmental vibrations such as sound waves depends on the transmission of tympanic membrane motion through the middle ear to the inner ear hair cells. In birds, the bony element of the middle ear is the columella; its distal end joins the cartilaginous extracolumella and tympanic membrane, while its basal expansion (the footplate) interfaces with inner ear fluid at the oval window, where it is held in place by the stapedial (columellar) annular ligament. Variation in footplate and oval window geometry can alter the annular ligament's size and shape, thereby influen

Immunity can impose a reproduction-survival tradeoff on human malaria parasites.

Many pathogenic organisms, including malaria parasites, produce specialized life stages for within-host multiplication (asexual) versus onward transmission (sexual reproduction). Restrained investment into transmission stage production-by allowing faster multiplication-is predicted to curtail the lifespan of infection via faster host recovery or mortality, a classic tradeoff between the rate and duration of transmission. In contrast, under a reproduction-survival tradeoff, restraining investment into reproduction should extend survival (for parasites, infection duration). To distinguish betwee

Development of convergent adaptations reveal highly conserved early ontogenetic skull shape in fishes with amphibious vision.

The development of skeletal elements in fish is strongly influenced by the functional demands and environmental constraints they face during different life stages but mostly occurs during their larval development. One example of late modifications within the skeletal system is the adaptation of the skull and eye morphology that allows for amphibious vision in the four-eyed fishes Anableps spp. Another species that is equally capable of simultaneous aquatic and aerial vision, Rhinomugil corsula, has been widely neglected in this field of research, although it presents great opportunities for co

Global impact of micronutrients in modern human evolution.

Micronutrients are essential components of the human diet, but dietary levels above or below their narrow, recommended range are harmful. Deficiencies increase the risk of stunted growth and metabolic, infectious, and respiratory disorders, and have likely been pervasive in human history, as local soils poor in micronutrients are widespread. Deficiencies are also common today, affecting approximately 2 billion people. Limited evidence exists for selenium, zinc, iodine, and iron deficiencies driving local adaptation in a few human populations, but the broader potential role of micronutrients in

Scoping review and interpretation of myofascial pain/fibromyalgia syndrome: An attempt to assemble a medical puzzle.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a common, overlooked, and underdiagnosed condition and has significant burden. MPS is often dismissed by clinicians while patients remain in pain for years. MPS can evolve into fibromyalgia, however, effective treatments for both are lacking due to absence of a clear mechanism. Many studies focus on central sensitization. Therefore, the purpose of this scoping review is to systematically search cross-disciplinary empirical studies of MPS, focusing on mechanical aspects, and suggest an organic mechanism explaining how it might evolve into fibromyalg

Adaptation to iron deficiency in human pathogenic fungi.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for virtually all eukaryotic organisms and plays a central role during microbial infections. Invasive fungal diseases are associated with strikingly high rates of mortality, but their impact on human health is usually underestimated. Upon a fungal infection, hosts restrict iron availability in order to limit the growth and virulence of the pathogen. Here, we use two model yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, to delve into the response to iron deficiency of human fungal pathogens, such as Candida glabrata, Candida albicans, Aspergill

Evolution, phylogenetic distribution and functional ecology of division of labour in trematodes.

Division of labour has evolved in many social animals where colonies consist of clones or close kin. It involves the performance of different tasks by morphologically distinct castes, leading to increased colony fitness. Recently, a form of division of labour has been discovered in trematodes: clonal rediae inside the snail intermediate host belong either to a large-bodied reproductive caste, or to a much smaller and morphologically distinct 'soldier' caste which defends the colony against co-infecting trematodes. We review recent research on this phenomenon, focusing on its phylogenetic distr

Nonautonomous dynamics of acute cell injury.

Medical conditions due to acute cell injury, such as stroke and heart attack, are of tremendous impact and have attracted huge amounts of research effort. The biomedical research that seeks cures for these conditions has been dominated by a qualitative, inductive mind-set. Although the inductive approach has not been effective in developing medical treatments, it has amassed enough information to allow construction of quantitative, deductive models of acute cell injury. In this work we develop a modeling approach by extending an autonomous nonlinear dynamic theory of acute cell injury that off

Effects of methylmercury on mosquito oviposition behavior: Maladaptive response to non-toxic exposure.

Animals can modulate their own exposure to environmental contaminants through behavioral plasticity such as diet and habitat choice. However, it remains unclear if behavior also has cascading effects on contaminant exposure across multiple generations. In insects, oviposition site selection is an important behavior females can use to modify offspring contaminant exposure risk. In this study, we use the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, to test how methylmercury (MeHg) affects oviposition site selection. We found that mosquito larval development rate and survival were negatively affected at

Changes in the fine root proteome of Fagus sylvatica L. trees associated with P-deficiency and amelioration of P-deficiency.

UNLABELLED: Phosphorus is often the least available macronutrient in soil. Lack in phosphorus has detrimental effect on growth and biomass production of European Fagus sylvatica L., a major trees species in temperate forests. In contrast to leaf tissues, few studies have examined changes in the root system and no study has ever investigated the proteomic changes affected in beech roots by a lack in available phosphate (P). Here, we studied roots of young Fagus sylvatica L. trees in their native soils from two forests sites with contrasting availability of P: one P rich and P poor soil. To unde

Multiple environmental controls on phytoplankton growth strategies determine adaptive responses of the N : P ratio.

The controls on the 'Redfield' N : P stoichiometry of marine phytoplankton and hence the N : P ratio of the deep ocean remain incompletely understood. Here, we use a model for phytoplankton ecophysiology and growth, based on functional traits and resource-allocation trade-offs, to show how environmental filtering, biotic interactions, and element cycling in a global ecosystem model determine phytoplankton biogeography, growth strategies and macromolecular composition. Emergent growth strategies capture major observed patterns in marine biomes. Using a new synthesis of experimental RNA and prot
