Relevance of brown adipose tissue in infancy and adolescence.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) was thought to disappear after infancy. Recent findings of BAT in patients undergoing positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) have renewed the interest in deciphering the relevance of this tissue in humans. Available data suggest that BAT is more prevalent in children than in adults and that its activation during adolescence is associated with significantly lower gains in weight and adiposity. Data also show that pediatric patients with metabolically active BAT on PET/CT examinations have significantly greater muscle volume than patients without ide

Adipose tissue, hormones, and treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious disease with increasing incidence worldwide, with fatal consequences if untreated. Traditional therapies require direct or indirect insulin replacement, which involves numerous limitations and complications. While insulin is the major regulator of blood glucose, recent reports demonstrate the ability of several extra-pancreatic hormones to decrease blood glucose and improve metabolic homeostasis. Such hormones mainly include adipokines originating from adipose tissue (AT), while specific factors from the gut and liver also contribute to glucose homeostasis. C

[Adipose tissue inflammation. Part 1. Morphological and functional manifestations].

The review describes a new pathomorphological phenomenon: adipose tissue inflammation (ATI) that develops in obesity and is characterized by cell infiltration, fibrosis, microcirculatory changes, a shift in adipokine secretion and adipose tissue metabolism, as well as blood accumulation of nonspecific inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, leukocytes, the level of which reflects the degree of the process. The changes in adipokine secretion and shifts in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, which are typical of ATI, favor the development of atherosclerosis, essential hyperten

Adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity, diabetes, and vascular diseases.

The classical perception of adipose tissue as a storage place of fatty acids has been replaced over the last years by the notion that adipose tissue has a central role in lipid and glucose metabolism and produces a large number of hormones and cytokines, e.g. tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, adiponectin, leptin, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1. The increased prevalence of excessive visceral obesity and obesity-related cardiovascular risk factors is closely associated with the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This clustering of vascular

Mesenteric adipose tissue alterations resulting from experimental reactivated colitis.

BACKGROUND: Adipose tissue secretes a large number of hormones that act either locally or at distant sites, modulating immune responses, inflammation, and many endocrine and metabolic functions. Abnormalities of fat in the mesentery have been long recognized in surgical specimens as characteristic features of Crohn's disease; however, the importance of this in chronic inflammatory disease is unknown. Additionally, adipocytes in depots that enclose lymph nodes or other dense masses of lymphoid tissue have many site-specific physiological properties. METHODS: In this study, the alterations of m

The role of endothelial cells in inflamed adipose tissue.

In recent years, the general concept has emerged that chronic low-grade inflammation can be the condition linking excessive development of adipose tissue (AT) and obesity-associated pathologies such as type II diabetes and atherosclerosis. Moreover, the evidence that the growth of the fat mass was associated with an accumulation of adipose tissue macrophages (ATM) has raised the hypothesis that the development of an inflammatory process within the growing fat mass is a primary event involved in the genesis of systemic metabolic and vascular alterations. As ATM originate from the bone marrow/bl

Adipose tissue-derived factors: impact on health and disease.

The endocrine functions of the adipose organ are widely studied at this stage. The adipose organ, and in particular adipocytes, communicate with almost all other organs. Although some adipose tissue pads assume the functions as distinct "miniorgans," adipocytes can also be present in smaller numbers interspersed with other cell types. Although fat pads have the potential to have a significant systemic impact, adipocytes may also affect neighboring tissues through paracrine interactions. These local or systemic effects are mediated through lipid and protein factors. The protein factors are comm

Genetic disorders of adipose tissue development, differentiation, and death.

Lack of adipose tissue, either complete or partial, is the hallmark of disorders known as lipodystrophies. Patients with lipodystrophies suffer from metabolic complications similar to those associated with obesity, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, and hepatic steatosis. The loss of body fat in inherited lipodystrophies can be caused by defects in the development and/or differentiation of adipose tissue as a consequence of mutations in a number of genes, including PPARG (encoding a nuclear hormone receptor), AGPAT2 (encoding an enzyme involved in the biosynth

Is adipose tissue a place for Mycobacterium tuberculosis persistence?

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent of tuberculosis (TB), has the ability to persist in its human host for exceptionally long periods of time. However, little is known about the location of the bacilli in latently infected individuals. Long-term mycobacterial persistence in the lungs has been reported, but this may not sufficiently account for strictly extra-pulmonary TB, which represents 10-15% of the reactivation cases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We applied in situ and conventional PCR to sections of adipose tissue samples of various anatomical origins from 19

Pinealectomy impairs adipose tissue adaptability to exercise in rats.

This study investigated the effects of pinealectomy and exercise training on rat adipose tissue metabolism. Pinealectomized (PINX) and sham-operated (CONTROL) adult male Wistar rats were subdivided into four subgroups, including PINX untrained, PINX trained, CONTROL untrained and CONTROL trained. At the end of the training period (8 wk), the rats were killed and peri-epididymal adipocytes were isolated for in vitro insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, conversion of D-[U-14C]-glucose, l-[U-14C]-lactate, [2-14C]-acetate and [1-14C]-palmitate into 14CO2, and insulin binding. [Hormones of adipose tissue (adipocytokines): ontogenetic and oncologic aspects].

Being an important component of body composition, adipose tissue accepts a lot of hormonal signals and, besides, is able to produce hormone-like peptides, named adipokines or adipocytokines, and participate in the metabolism of steroid hormones. Endocrine properties of adipose tissue are dependent of its volume, morphology (size and number of adipocytes), fat topography (visceral and subcutaneous fat), characteristics of distinct fat depot (including mammary fat), some features of genome, etc. Certain characteristics of the adipose organ are formed and then realized in pre- and postnatal life

Pinealectomy alters adipose tissue adaptability to fasting in rats.

This study investigated the effects of pinealectomy and fasting on rat adipose tissue metabolism, as well as on profiles of the hormones directly involved in its regulation (insulin, leptin, and corticosterone). Pinealectomized (PINX) and sham-operated (CONTROL) adult male Wistar rats were killed 6 weeks after surgery, in either fed or fasted (12 and 36 hours) states. Blood samples (for glucose and hormone determinations) and peri-epididymal adipocytes (for in vitro insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, oxidation, and incorporation into lipids) were collected. Pineal ablation decreased insulin-st

Adiponectin and resistin--new hormones of white adipose tissue.

OBJECTIVE: To review experience with open surgery for paediatric urolithiasis during a 10-year period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The hospital records of patients up to 13 years old and treated between 1990 and 2000 for stones were reviewed; there were 310 patients (98 girls and 212 boys, aged 9 months to 13 years, mean 6.8 years). RESULTS: The commonest symptoms were renal-ureteric colic (26.7%), gross haematuria (19%), urinary retention (16.7%), and abdominal and/or flank pain (13.2%). Because of poverty and the resultant inability to pay medical fees, 19 children presented very late with pyone

Hypothalamic histamine neurons activate lipolysis in rat adipose tissue.

The contribution of hypothalamic histamine neurons to the central regulation of peripheral lipid metabolism was investigated in rats using in vivo microdialysis system. A bolus infusion of L-histamine at doses of 10--10(3) nmol/rat into the third cerebral ventricle (i3vt) dose-dependently increased glycerol concentration in the perfusate from the epididymal adipose tissue. I3vt infusion of 10(2) nmol/rat thioperamide, an autoinhibitory H(3) receptor antagonist that activates histamine neurons to increase synthesis and release of neuronal histamine, convincingly mimicked histamine action in the

Long-term changes in adipose tissue in human disease.

Redistribution of white adipose tissue is a long-term symptom of several chronic diseases. Although the roles of adipocytes in acute illness have been thoroughly studied, how or why short-term responses of adipose tissue to disease sometimes produce long-term redistribution, and the causal relationship between the anatomical changes and the associated metabolic syndromes are poorly understood. The present paper reviews explanations for the redistribution of adipose tissue after infection with HIV, and in Crohn's disease; both conditions that share the peculiarity of selective expansion of cert
