Untreated vasomotor symptoms of the menopause can have a major impact on women at work. Recent recommendations advocate modification of the working environment, including adequate air-conditioning, to help relieve these symptoms. However, this may cause discomfort for work colleagues. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman with cold urticaria. Cold urticaria is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. Our patient's symptoms were exacerbated when her postmenopausal work colleagues turned the air-conditioner temperature down to relieve their vasomotor symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate parotid and submandibular/sublingual (SM/SL) unstimulated salivary secretion rate in a group of healthy individuals in winter and summer, and to observe the effect of room-adjusted temperature (air-conditioning) on salivary flow-rate in those seasons.
DESIGN: Unstimulated salivary secretion rates of the right parotid and the SM/SL glands were measured in 50 healthy Israeli volunteers. Each volunteer was evaluated four times during the study: twice in winter (February-March) and twice in summer (July-August).

This article examines heat-related illnesses and deaths that occurred in Wisconsin during the summer of 1995, which was among the warmest seasons on record. Death certificates that listed heat exposure as a contributing or underlying cause of 154 deaths and ambulance run reports for 454 heat-related emergency calls were analyzed. The physical strain of miners in hot salt mines based on analyses of heart-rates, deep body temperatures, and sweat-rates during real work was studied. Based on these results changes in the working conditions have been realized (air-conditioning of cabins or ambient air, technological changes, workpause-regimes). Cooling-wastes are not sufficient to reduce the thermal strain in hot-dry climate in normal work of salt-mines, independent of the principle of cooling. During fire-fighters work the physical work is the more dominating stressor in relation to the thermal strain.
