Mitigating household air pollution exposure through kitchen renovation.

Globally, over three billion people rely on traditional solid fuels for cooking and heating, leading to significant household air pollution and critical public health concerns. While transitioning to clean energy carriers faces challenges of accessibility and affordability-especially among low-income, rural populations-alternative strategies like kitchen layout modifications and the use of ventilation fans may effectively reduce exposure to pollutants. Here, we analyze factors influencing the adoption of separated kitchens and mechanical ventilation and evaluate changes in human exposure to PM…

Protecting Child Health From Air Pollution in India.

Recent research has underscored the diverse ways in which air pollution detrimentally affects child health in India. Notably, India shoulders one of the highest burdens of mortality of children under five years of age globally due to exposure to air pollution. Distinct mitigation strategies are vital to reduce air pollution exposure and its resultant health burdens among children in India when compared to strategies applicable in the global West. This necessity arises due to the substantial influence of residential combustion of solid fuels, and considerable disparities prevalent among India's…

Newborn glomerular function and gestational particulate air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Nephron number variability may hold significance in the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis. We explore the i … uted lag models to assess the association between cord blood cystatin C and gestational particulate air pollution exposure. FINDINGS: Average ± SD levels of cord blood cystatin C levels amounted to 2.16 ± 0.35 mg/L. Adjusting for covariates, every 0.5 μg/m³ and 5 μg/m³ increment in gestational exposure to black carbon (BC) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) c …

Integrated Sustainable Management of Petrochemical Industrial Air Pollution.

The emission inventory, emission factor, and spatial concentration distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from a petrochemical industry (aromatics plant) were intensively evaluated in this study to elucidate the potential sources of BTX emission and their contribution to ambient concentrations. Five emission groups were quantified through direct measurement and emission models. These data were then used as input for the AERMOD dispersion model for the source apportionment analysis. The source to ambient contribution analysis revealed that a wastewater treatment facility and organic

Ambient air pollution and rate of spontaneous abortion.

Spontaneous abortion (SAB), defined as a pregnancy loss before 20 weeks of gestation, affects up to 30% of conceptions, yet few modifiable risk factors have been identified. We estimated the effect of ambient air pollution exposure on SAB incidence in Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO), a preconception cohort study of North American couples who were trying to conceive. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline, every 8 weeks during preconception follow-up, and in early and late pregnancy. We analyzed data on 4643 United States (U.S.) participants and 851 Canadian participants who enrolled…

Ambient air pollution and endocrinologic disorders in childhood.

Ambient air pollution has been proposed as an important environmental risk factor that increases global mortality and morbidity. Over the past decade, several human and animal studies have reported an association between exposure to air pollution and altered metabolic and endocrine systems in children. However, the results for these studies were mixed and inconclusive and did not demonstrate causality because different outcomes were observed due to different study designs, exposure periods, and methodologies for exposure measurements. Current proposed mechanisms include altered immune response…

Air pollution and multiple sclerosis: a comprehensive review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), leading to progressive functional impairments, and many intrinsic and acquired factors are believed to be associated with its development and relapse. In terms of environmental factors, air pollution has gained much attention during recent decades, as chronic exposure to ambient air pollution seems to increase the level of some pro-inflammatory markers in the human brain, which can lead to neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown. These events …

Particulate Air Pollution and Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review.

Air pollution is associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, which predispose to several chronic diseases in human. Emerging evidence suggests that the severity and progression of osteoporosis are directly associated with inflammation induced by air pollutants like particulate matter (PM). This systematic review examined the relationship between PM and bone health or fractures. A comprehensive literature search was conducted from January until February 2021 using the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library databases. Human cross-sectional, cohort and case-con…

Street protests and air pollution in Hong Kong.

June 2019 saw large-scale street protests in Hong Kong that impeded traffic flow along streets in areas around to the Legislative Council building. These had the potential to reduce overall air pollutant emissions from traffic and lower their concentrations. Two roadside monitoring stations relatively close to the Legislative Council reveal that measured concentrations of nitrogen dioxide declined during the protests compared with measurements from other sites by at least 50% on many occasions. There were only subtle changes in particulate loads and no evidence of any reduction in carbon monox

Air Pollution and Cardiac Arrhythmias: A Comprehensive Review.

Air pollution is the mixture of some chemical and environmental agents including dust, fumes, gases, particulate matters, and biological materials which can be harmful for the environment and the human body. The increasing trend of the air pollution, especially in developing countries, may exert its detrimental effects on human health. The potentially harmful effects of air pollution on the human health have been recognized and many epidemiological studies have clearly suggested the strong association between air pollution exposure and increased morbidities and mortalities. Air pollutants are …

Air pollution: A public health approach for Portugal.

At the global level, several epidemiological studies have conclusively pointed out the associations between short-term exposure to air pollution and acute health effects, and long-term exposure with adverse health effects such as premature mortality from severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This study intended to characterize exposures and their adverse health effects. Three independent sets of vectors were analyzed on a nationwide level and annual basis: air pollutant emissions, ambient air concentrations and health indicators of the period 2009 to 2015. The emissions analysis, for…

Global burden of diseases attributable to air pollution.

Air pollution has remained a major issue of concern over the years with serious toxicological effects on human health. This paper evaluates the comparison of estimates and describes the global burden of diseases related to air pollution in the regions of WHO from 1990 to 2015. The study uses existing data from IHME on global burden of diseases (Mortality and Disability Adjusted Life Years) related to air pollution such as Trachea, Bronchus and Lung cancer, COPD, Ischemic heart disease and Stroke. This study shows that air pollution is one of the major environmental risk factors for the global …

Ambient Air Pollution and Risk of Gestational Hypertension.

Air pollution has been linked to hypertension in the general population, but data on gestational hypertension (GH) are limited. We investigated criteria air pollutants and air toxics during the period before conception and in early gestation in relation to GH risk in the Consortium on Safe Labor/Air Quality and Reproductive Health Study (United States, 2002-2008). Modified Community Multi-scale Air Quality models estimated air pollution exposures for 6,074 singleton pregnancies in which GH was present and 199,980 normotensive pregnancies. Generalized estimating equations estimated relative ris…

Effect of environmental air pollution on cardiovascular diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Management of renal colic and suspected urolithiasis in pregnancy remains a controversial topic. Competing concerns of operative fluoroscopy and prolonged duration of ureteral stent or nephrostomy tube fuel arguments for expectant management versus early surgical intervention. To address these concerns, we have offered ultrasound guided ureteroscopy for definitive management of suspected urolithiasis during pregnancy. We herein review our experience with this approach. METHODS: We performed a multi-center retrospective review of all pregnant patients undergoing ureteroscopy for
