Facile Synthesis of α-Silyl Alcohols via Addition of Trimethylsilyllithium to Carbonyl Compounds.

α-Silyl alcohols serve as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite their broad utility, efficient methods for their preparation remain limited. Although the nucleophilic addition of silyllithium reagents acting as silyl anion equivalents to carbonyl compounds offers a straightforward route to α-silyl alcohols, detailed investigations on the preparation of highly basic and inherently unstable trialkylsilyllithium reagents, as well as the scope of compatible carbonyl substrates, remain scarce. In this study, we report an efficient and environmentally benign method for the generati…

Synthesis of Diarylheptanoids Using Acetone and Alcohols via a Catalytic Borrowing Alkylation Strategy.

A Ru-catalyzed sequential borrowing hydrogen strategy for the synthesis of diarylheptanoid frameworks is reported. The cross-coupling of alcohols with acetone provides alkylated ketones in high yields, followed by selective α-alkylation with diverse alcohols to afford unsymmetrical diarylheptanoid precursors. This approach features a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance and is demonstrated through the concise synthesis of several natural diarylheptanoids, including Acerogenin C, Acerogenin G, Engelhardione, Muricarpone, Yakuchinone, and Pterocarine derivatives.

Synthesis of functionalized lactones: catalytic cross-coupling of 1,2-diols and allylic alcohols.

Simple industrial feedstock chemicals such as allylic alcohols and 1,2-diols are cross-coupled to deliver δ-hydroxybutyrolactones. The reaction occurs through O-H bond activation via amine-amide metal-ligand cooperation involving allylic aldehydes, radical intermediates, and Ru(III) species, as established by EPR studies. This tandem process proceeds with the liberation of molecular hydrogen as the only green byproduct.

Oxidation of Alcohols to Carboxylates with N2O Catalyzed by Ruthenium(II)-CNC Complexes.

Air-stable ruthenium-(II) complexes based on a picoline-derived CNC pincer ligand, [RuH-(CNC)-(CO)L]X (L = PPh3, X = Br; L = CO, X = BF4), were found to catalyze under basic conditions the oxidation with N2O of a series of alcohols to carboxylates. Both [RuH-(CNC)-(CO)L]X complexes react readily with strong bases (tBuOK or KHMDS), giving rise to a Ru-(II) complex containing a deprotonated CNC* ligand (when L = PPh3) or a Ru(0)-CNC derivative (for L = CO). Furthermore, the mechanism of the catalytic reaction has been elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic…

Engineering of the Thiamine Diphosphate-Dependent JanthE for the Synthesis of Tertiary Alcohols.

The development of (bio)catalytic methods to chiral tertiary alcohols is in demand, yet the enantioselective synthesis of tertiary alcohols with sterically hindered moieties is problematic. JanthE is a novel thiamine diphosphate-dependent enzyme that catalyzes aldehyde-ketone cross-coupling reactions with a wide range of donor and acceptor substrates. However, product formation is low and precludes large-scale production. We investigated the conversion of 2-oxobutanoate and the bulky ketone phenoxy-2-propanone to the product 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenoxypentan-3-one as a model reaction for the …

Electrochemical Halogenation and Etherification of Alcohols Enabled by a Halide-Coupled Phosphine Oxidation.

Phosphine-mediated nucleophilic substitution reactions of alcohol substrates, such as the Appel and Mitsunobu reactions, have found widespread applications in chemical synthesis. However, their reliance on stoichiometric chemical oxidants (e.g., carbon tetrachloride and azodicarboxylate reagents) often results in limited functional group tolerance, environmentally hazardous wastes, and unsatisfactory reaction economy. Herein, we describe a user-friendly electrochemical Appel reaction employing readily available tetrabutylammonium halide salts ( n Bu4N+X-, X = Cl, Br, and I) as the halogen sour

Regioselective Transfer Hydrogenation of Substituted Oxiranes with Alcohols Using MgO as the Catalyst.

An excellent regioselectivity of vapor-phase catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of substituted oxiranes (methyl-, n-butyl-, and phenyloxirane) with alkanols (EtOH, 2-PrOH or 2-PeOH) as hydrogen donors in the presence of magnesium oxide as a catalyst was attained. In the vapor phase, all of these oxiranes as well as 1,2-epoxycyclohexane were hydrogenated. Moreover, it was found that primary alcohols were always the main products of CTH of methyl-, n-butyl-, and phenyloxirane with very good regioselectivity towards the alcohols: 93, 73, and 100%, respectively. It was shown that vapor-phase C…

Gold nanoparticle-decorated amorphous carbon for oxidative cyclization of anthranilamide and aryl alcohols.

Herein, gold nanoparticle-decorated amorphous carbon (Au/AC) was prepared by reducing chloroauric acid and layering it on amorphous carbon. The characteristics of Au/AC were examined using FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDS, and XPS. To assess its catalytic activity, Au/AC was tested in a reaction involving anthranilamide and benzyl alcohol at 110 °C for 24 hours. This reaction yielded various 2-phenylquinazolin-4(3H)-one derivatives in moderate to good yields (44-80%). Furthermore, control experiments were conducted to demonstrate the oxidation and cyclization functions of Au/AC. Noteworthy aspects of

Visible light-mediated synthesis of quinazolinones and benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxides utilizing aliphatic alcohols.

The activation and utilization of challenging aliphatic alcohols like methanol and ethanol is a very appealing approach to synthesize valuable organic molecules. Utilization of methanol and ethanol as a coupling partner has emerged as a valuable alternative to synthesize industrially relevant N-heterocycles because they can be easily procured from renewable sources unlike other activated coupling partners which are expensive and also unstable. Herein, a mild and metal-free photocatalytic protocol to synthesize quinazolinones and more challenging benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxides, which is unpreced…

Morphology Variation of Ternary PdCuSn Nanocrystalline Assemblies and Their Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Alcohols.

Metal alloys not only increase the composition and spatial distribution of elements but also provide the opportunity to adjust their physicochemical properties. Recently, multimetallic alloy nanocatalysts have attracted great attention in energy applications and the chemical industry. This work presents the production of three ternary PdCuSn nanocrystalline assemblies with similar compositions via a one-step hydrothermal method. The shape variation of assembly units from nanosheets and nanowires to nanoparticles were realized by adjusting the percentage of Sn in metal precursors. Experimental

Redox-enabled cooperative catalysis by activating secondary alcohols using low-valent Zn complexes.

Inspired by nature's redox management in bioinorganic systems, we developed various Zn-complexes to catalyze a radical-mediated borrowing hydrogen process for producing β-disubstituted ketones. A diverse range of secondary alcohols, including fatty alcohols, terpenoids and steroid analogs, were successfully utilized for the chemoselective functionalization of ketones. Several organometallic and control studies suggest that coordinatively unsaturated radical species operate as active catalysts to promote alcohol activation and initiate the HAT process.

Oxidative coupling of N-nitrosoanilines with substituted allyl alcohols under rhodium (III) catalysis.

Rhodium(III) catalysis has been used for C-H activation of N-nitrosoanilines with substituted allyl alcohols. This method provides an efficient synthesis of the functional N-nitroso ortho β-aryl aldehydes and ketones with low catalyst loading, high functional group tolerance, and superior reactivity of allyl alcohols toward N-nitrosoanilines. We demonstrated that reaction also proceeds through the one-pot synthesis of N-nitrosoaniline, followed by subsequent, C-H activation. The protocol was also feasible with acyrlaldehyde and methyl vinyl ketone which furnished the same oxidative N-nitroso c…

Organophotoredox-Catalyzed Intermolecular Formal Grob Fragmentation of Cyclic Alcohols with Activated Allylic Acetates.

We have developed an efficient method that employs organophotoredox-catalyzed relay Grob fragmentation to facilitate the smooth ring-opening allylation of cyclic alcohols in an environmentally friendly manner. This protocol directly incorporates a wide spectrum of cyclic alcohols and activated allylic acetates into the cross-coupling reaction, eliminating the need for metal catalysts. The process yields a variety of distally unsaturated ketones with good to excellent outcomes and stereoselectivity, while acetic acid is the sole byproduct.

Hydrogen-bond-acceptor ligands enable distal C(sp3)-H arylation of free alcohols.

The functionalization of C-H bonds in organic molecules is one of the most direct approaches for chemical synthesis. Recent advances in catalysis have allowed native chemical groups such as carboxylic acids, ketones and amines to control and direct C(sp3)-H activation1-4. However, alcohols, among the most common functionalities in organic chemistry5, have remained intractable because of their low affinity for late transition-metal catalysts6,7. Here we describe ligands that enable alcohol-directed arylation of δ-C(sp3)-H bonds. We use charge balance and a secondary-coordination-sphere hydrogen…
