Alopecia areata is a condition that affects hair follicles and leads to hair loss ranging from small well-defined patches to complete loss of all body hair. Despite its high incidence, the pathobiology is not fully understood, and no single concept could be universally accepted. Alopecia areata is mostly considered to be an autoimmune disease, in which the collapse of hair follicle immune privilege plays a key role. Higher incidence rate in the female population and increased overall risk of other autoimmune disorders militate in favor of autoimmune hypothesis. Antibodies against multiple comp…

Phototherapy is a useful therapeutic method for various skin diseases due to its modulatory effect on the cutaneous immune system. Alopecia areata is a dermatosis characterized by partial or complete hair loss. Collapse of the immune privilege of the hair follicle, which induces noncicatricial alopecia, is an important factor in its etiology. Several forms of phototherapy are used in dermatology.

Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss, characterized by a progressive hair follicular miniaturization, caused by androgen hormones on a genetically susceptible hair follicle, in androgenic-dependent areas. Characteristic phenotype of androgenetic alopecia is also observed in many other hair disorders. These disorders are androgenetic-like diseases that cause many differential diagnosis or therapeutic error problems. The objective of this review was to systematically analyse the greatest number of conditions that mimic the AGA pattern and explain their disease pathogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood alopecia is a relative rare event in general paediatric dermatology practice. Hair loss in children may have multiple causes, and there are different types of alopecia according to age groups. The aim of the study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of alopecia in children from two Chilean paediatric hospitals.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Descriptive analysis of clinical records of patients from the Dermatology Department of Roberto del Rio and Luis Calvo Mackenna Hospitals between January 2007 and June 2010. Patients with clinical diagnosis of alopecia w…

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is the term used to describe hairless areas of the scalp. They can follow a specific pattern, be diffuse or circumscript. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) follows a pattern: in men thinning of temples and vertex up to total baldness; in women thinning of the midline or parietal area.
CAUSES: Lack of iron or cytostatic drugs cause diffuse alopecia, while in autoimmune diseases such as alopecia areata or lichen planus bizarre shapes of hairless areas are observed.
TREATMENT: For therapy, the following medications are used: topical minoxidil solution for AGA of men and women; sy…

Alopecia areata is a complex genetic, immune-mediated disease that targets anagen hair follicles. The disease affects children and adults and is characterized by round or oval patches of hair loss, loss of all scalp hair (alopecia totalis), body hair (alopecia universalis), or ophiasis pattern hair loss. Patients may also present with patchy loss in multiple hair-bearing areas. Commonly associated diseases include asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, thyroid disease, and automimmune diseases, such as thyroiditis and vitiligo. Nail abnormalities may precede, follow, or occur concurrent…

Hair loss is a very common complaint. Patients may describe increased shedding and diffuse or localized alopecia. The differential diagnosis of hair loss includes a number of disorders causing cicatricial or noncicatricial alopecias. This paper describes the clinical approaches and diagnostic tests that are useful in the evaluation of patients presenting with alopecia. It also reviews treatments for noncicatricial alopecias, including androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium, as well as cicatricial alopecias, including lichen planopilaris, its clinical variant frontal fibr…

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is a very common complaint and dermatologists should be able to make the correct diagnosis of different types of alopecia and choose the best therapeutic strategy according to patients' and doctors' expectations.
OBJECTIVE: To review treatment of the most common forms of hair loss.
METHODS: Literature review and expert opinion.
CONCLUSION: There is good evidence based information for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. There are very few randomized good quality studies and no information about long-term results for most of the available treatments for alopecia area…

Alopecia areata (AA) is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease resulting in partial or total nonscarring hair loss. The scalp is the predominant site of involvement, with the most common clinical pattern involving multiple areas of patchy alopecia. Childhood AA can be emotionally devastating in its worst forms. This article is a brief overview of childhood AA focusing specifically on therapeutic options.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is a disorder in which there is loss of hair causing patches of baldness but with no scarring of the affected area. It can affect the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or cause loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis). It is a relatively common condition affecting 0.15% of the population. Although in many cases it can be a self-limiting condition, nevertheless hair loss can often have a severe social and emotional impact.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions used in the management of alopecia areata, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to estimate the association between alopecia areata (AA) and autoimmunity. To such scope, the authors have estimated the presence of autoantibodies in patients with alopecia areata joints to the authors' observation in the last two years.
METHODS: In 63 patients affected with different forms of AA (45 cases with multiple patches, 10 with single patch, 5 with alopecia totalis and 3 with alopecia universalis), has been estimated a autoantibodies panel. In 28 subjects (44%) it has been evidenced the presence of autoantibodies; in particular, 23 subjects were…
