Obesity, regardless of age, is associated with various metabolic disorders. Amino acids, as essential food ingredients, play a critical role in regulating glucose and energy metabolism. Thus, their plasma concentrations may reflect the metabolic state of the individual. This narrative review aims to find out similarities in plasma amino acid profiles across the selected obese individuals (children, adolescents, and adults). An analysis of 21 original studies revealed similar amino acid alterations regardless of the age group- in particular, elevated levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs:

OBJECTIVES: Chronic kidney disease in children, often caused by congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), can lead to progressive renal scarring and dysfunction. Given the kidneys' role in amino acid homeostasis, plasma amino acid levels may be associated with renal scarring. This study investigates the relationship between plasma amino acid levels and renal scarring in children with CAKUT.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study consisted of children aged between 1 month and 18 years who were diagnosed with CAKUT between January 2019 and December 2023. The patients were divid

A study was conducted using the ileal digestibility technique with grower-finisher pigs to evaluate the effects of particle size reduction of soybean meal (SBM) on amino acid and energy digestibility. Soybean meal was processed through a hammer mill to achieve average particle sizes of 900, 600, 300, and 150 microm. The treatments included the use of two soybean meal sources and soy protein concentrate. One source of SBM was ground to four different particle sizes (i.e., 949, 600, 389, 185); a second source was a common SBM source used in other trials (i.e., 800 microm). The soy protein concen

In this research compositional changes of tinplate-canned tomato purées, with or without the addition of essential onion oil were investigated. The study was focused on the analyses of carbohydrates and carboxylic acids in two groups of canned samples (with or without nitrates) to determine whether their chemical composition was affected with storage time. The measurements were performed by high performance liquid chromatography, during six months of storage. The contents of glucose, fructose and two major organic acids, citric and malic, were found in the concentration range 1.77-1.97%, 1.86-

Protein substitutes developed for phenylketonuria (PKU) are a synthetic source of protein commonly based on L-amino acids. They are essential in the treatment of phenylketonuria (PKU) and other amino acid disorders, allowing the antagonistic amino acid to be removed but with the safe provision of all other amino acids necessary for maintaining normal physiological function. They were first formulated by a chemist and used experimentally on a 2-year-old girl with PKU and their nutritional formulations and design have improved over time. Since 2008, a bioactive macropeptide has been used as a ba

We investigated whether short-term underfeeding could induce adaptative mechanisms in portal-drained viscera (PDV) that would allow nutrients to be spared for vital functions in adult ewes. Six ewes (three of them fitted with catheters in the mesenteric artery and portal and mesenteric veins) were fed, in a double Latin square design (2 weeks per experimental period), a regrowth of natural grassland hay at 143 (high; H), 88 (medium; M) and 51 (low; L) % of their energy maintenance requirements. The digestibility of the diet was measured in all six ewes and the net portal fluxes of nutrients in

Green peas (Pisum sativum L.) are recognized as a sustainable source with protein content ranging from 23.1 to 30.9% on a dry basis. Data regarding the impact of household cooking methods on pea protein quality remain limited. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of four cooking methods - steaming (S4), boiling (B4), slow cooking (SC1), and pressure cooking (PC30) - compared with a control (without cooking treatment) on the nutritional profile, including protein content and in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD). SC1 was identified as the selected method, producing 6.52 ± 0.43% protein (

Industrial cooking of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) under well-established procedures is advantageous for current consumers, which demand healthy and convenient food. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of industrial water boiling, without the addition of salt, on the nutritional profile of common octopus. True retentions (TRs) were calculated for essential nutrients and toxic elements. After boiling, the moisture content decreased, resulting in a concentration of other constituents (protein, fat, fatty acids, majority of amino acids, phosphorus, zinc, and iodine). High TRs were obtaine

In recent years, a novel treatment method for cancer has emerged, which is based on the starvation of tumors of amino acids like arginine. The deprivation of arginine in serum is based on enzymatic degradation and can be realized by arginine deaminases like the l-amino acid oxidase found in the ink toxin of the sea hare Aplysia punctata. Previously isolated from the ink, the l-amino acid oxidase was described to oxidate the essential amino acids l-lysine and l-arginine to their corresponding deaminated alpha-keto acids. Here, we present the recombinant production and functionalization of the a

Amino acids, especially essential amino acids are required for protein synthesis and as energy sources in all living cells. Since most amino acids are hydrophilic, special membrane proteins are necessary for their transmembrane transport particularly in transformed cells. We cloned a cDNA encoding L-type amino acid transporter, and named it LAT1. LAT1 is highly expressed in most tumor cells and in a few normal tissues such as the bone marrow, spleen, placenta and brain. As a homolog of LAT1, we also cloned LAT2 which is expressed in various normal tissues. In order to clarify the role of LAT1

Essential amino acids (AAs) play a key role in stimulating intestinal adaptation after massive small gut resection. The nutritional effect of dietary amino acids during intestinal regrowth has received considerable attention in recent years. This review explores the significance of dietary amino acids in the nutritional management of infants and children with intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome (SBS) as reported in the medical literature over the last three decades. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases. Breast milk emerged as the first-line enteral regimen recom

Yersinia is the genus of bacteria that is the causative agent in plague or the black death, and on several occasions this organism has killed a significant portion of the world's population. An essential virulence determinant of Yersinia was shown to be a protein tyrosine phosphatase. The recombinant 50-kilodalton Yersinia phosphatase had a specificity for removal of phosphate from Tyr-containing as opposed to Ser/Thr-containing phosphopeptides and proteins. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to show that the Yersinia phosphatase possesses an essential Cys residue required for catalysis. Amino

Obesity is a major nutritional disorder that produces many abnormal metabolic responses. The effect of injury-induced stresses acting synergistically with the state of excessive body fat is not well known. Plasma levels of circulating free amino acids reflect the net status of protein breakdown and utilization. Hypoaminoacidemia is a common finding in severe injury and its significance in obese subjects was investigated. We measured in 10 obese (body mass index [BMI] greater than 30) and 10 non-obese (BMI less than 30) traumatized (Injury Severity Score [ISS] 17 to 50) patients, the plasma lev

A 5-year-old boy with severe mental retardation and spastic quadriplegia accompanied by tonic seizures and hyperammonemia was diagnosed as having argininemia due to an arginase deficiency in his erythrocytes. His motor and mental abilities began to deteriorate at the age of 3 years. Thereafter, he lost his ability to stand alone, to sit and even to crawl by himself. After he was diagnosed as argininemia , a protein restricted diet was given as therapy, which was accompanied with a supplement of essential amino acids. However, his clinical condition had not improved very much. The erythrocytes

Faithful translation of the genetic code during protein synthesis is fundamental to the growth, development, and function of living organisms. Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARSs), which define the genetic code by correctly pairing amino acids with their cognate tRNAs, are responsible for 'quality control' in the flow of information from a gene to a protein. When differences in binding energies of amino acids to an AARS are inadequate, editing is used to achieve high selectivity. Editing occurs at the synthetic active site by hydrolysis of noncognate aminoacyl-adenylates (pretransfer editing) an

UNLABELLED: Aromatic amino acids-tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and histidine-are essential for bacterial growth and are among the most energetically expensive metabolites to synthesize. Despite this cost, it has been recently shown that bacteria possess exporters for these amino acids. Here, we identify aexB (formerly yvjA) as a gene encoding a novel aromatic amino acid exporter in Bacillus subtilis. Using a transposon-based screen, we found that aexB overexpression confers resistance to the toxic tryptophan analog 5-fluorotryptophan. Additional analog screens revealed that AexB also pr

Carbonaceous chondrites contain life's essential building blocks, including amino acids, and their delivery of organic compounds would have played a key role in life's emergence on Earth. Aqueous alteration of carbonaceous chondrites is a widespread process induced by the heat produced by radioactive decay of nuclides like 26Al. Simple ubiquitous molecules like formaldehyde and ammonia could produce various organic compounds, including amino acids and complex organic macromolecules. However, the effects of radiation on such organic chemistry are unknown. Hence, the effects of gamma rays from r
