Seroprevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum Antibodies Following Tick Bites: A Serosurvey in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Romania.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an emerging tick-borne disease. Although Anaplasma phagocytophilum has been identified in vectors and animal reservoirs in Romania, evidence of human exposure has not yet been reported. This study aimed to generate initial evidence of human infection by evaluating A. phagocytophilum antibodies in individuals with recent tick exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional serosurvey between 2023 and 2024 at a tertiary care hospital in Bucharest, enrolling 80 participants 4 to 12 weeks following a tick bite. Serum IgG antibodies against A. phagocytophilum were detect…

Development of a Recombinase-Mediated Cassette Exchange System for Gene Knockout and Expression of Non-Native Gene Sequences in Rickettsia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Incidence of vector-borne diseases, including rickettsioses and anaplasmosis, has been increasing in many parts of the world. The obligate intracellular nature of rickettsial pathogens has hindered the development of robust genetic tools for the study of gene function and the identification of therapeutic targets. Transposon mutagenesis has contributed to recent progress in the identification of virulence factors in this important group of pathogens. METHODS: Combining the efficiency of the himar1 transposon method with a recombinase-mediated system, we aimed to develop…

Genetically modified live vaccine offers protective immunity against wild-type Anaplasma marginale tick-transmission challenge.

Anaplasma marginale is a tick-borne pathogen of cattle that causes bovine anaplasmosis in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. Killed vaccines derived from infected erythrocytes have been used for control of this disease with limited success. Recently, we described a targeted deletion mutation in the phage head-to-tail connector protein gene of A. marginale which caused bacterial attenuation in vivo and provided protection as a modified live vaccine (MLAV). Following intravenous injection of susceptible steers, the MLAV induced protective immunity against disease progression.…

The prevalence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys and Babesia spp. in dogs in Nueva Ecija, Philippines based on multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) assay.

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys and Babesia spp. in dogs. It describes the practice of veterinarians in detecting tick-borne diseases in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Seventy blood samples were collected and were subjected to multiplex PCR for the detection of E. canis, Babesia spp. and A. platys. The prevalence of babesiosis is the highest in Cabanatuan City (2/10), while a 10% prevalence (1/10) was observed in Science City of Muñoz, Talavera and Sta. Rosa. E. canis were only detected in Cabanatuan City. However, no anaplasmosis was detect…

First serological and molecular evidence on the endemicity of Anaplasma ovis and A. marginale in Hungary.

Recurring and spontaneously curing spring haemoglobinuria was recently reported in a small sheep flock in a selenium deficient area of north … otein (msp) 4 gene in sheep and cattle, respectively. Haemoglobinuria, an unusual clinical sign for anaplasmosis might have been a consequence of transient intravascular haemolysis facilitated by selenium deficiency in recently infected sheep, as indicated by the reduction of mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Membrane damage was also demonstra …

Suspected Neuro-invasive Powassan Virus Infection in a Pediatric Patient.

Powassan virus lineage II (POWV), also known as deer tick virus, is an emerging tick-borne pathogen transmitted by Ixodes scapularis, the natural vector for the organisms that causes Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. POWV is the only tick-borne flavivirus in North America known to cause disease in humans. We present a suspected pediatric case of POWV infection in northern Wisconsin.

A rare case of delayed anaplasma phagocytophilum-induced pancytopenia: A diagnostic conundrum.

INTRODUCTION: Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a potentially fatal tick-borne disease caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. It is most commonly found in the Northeastern and Midwestern parts of the United States especially during spring and summer months. The clinical picture of anaplasmosis is varied ranging from common symptoms such as fever, headache and myalgia to rarer presentations such as pancytopenia. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 62 year old male who presented with watery diarrhea, fever, and pancytopenia. Although there is a br…

Case report: anaplasma-related myocardial damage in a dog.

We present the case of a female dog that was evaluated following an episode of heart failure and was subsequently diagnosed with anaplasmosis. Cardiac assessment revealed evidence of myocardial injury, systolic dysfunction, and conduction system abnormalities. This case highlights the importance of considering Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection as a potential cause of myocarditis, especially in instances of unexplained heart failure and elevated troponin levels in the absence of other underlying conditions.

General review of tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats world-wide.

A general review of the tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats is given, with the emphasis on those thought to be of greatest economic importance. These include babesiosis, theileriosis, cowdriosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Nairobi sheep diseases and tick paralysis. A commented list of tick-borne diseases and their vectors is presented. It is stressed that large gaps remain in our knowledge of the real importance in the field of many of these diseases, especially in local stock.

Gray Wolf Exposure to Emerging Vector-Borne Diseases in Wisconsin with Comparison to Domestic Dogs and Humans.

World-wide concern over emerging vector-borne diseases has increased in recent years for both animal and human health. In the United Sates, concern about vector-borne diseases in canines has focused on Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and heartworm which infect domestic and wild canids. Of these diseases, Lyme and anaplasmosis are also frequently diagnosed in humans. Gray wolves (Canis lupus) recolonized Wisconsin in the 1970s, and we evaluated their temporal and geographic patterns of exposure to these four vector-borne diseases in Wisconsin as the population expanded between 1985 an…
