Dog-Assisted Therapy vs Relaxation for Children and Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Study.

The rationale of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Dog-assisted Therapy (DAT) in children and adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We conducted a randomized controlled trial in a cohort of 71 children and adolescents with FASD. Participants were randomly assigned either to DAT group (n = 38) or Relaxation Group (control group) (n = 33). Results revealed that participants who were assigned to the DAT group experienced significantly reduced externalizing symptoms (CBCL Externalizing Inattention: t (69) = 2.81, p = .007; d = 0.7); CBCL Opposition: t (69) = 2.54, p = .

Co-administration of alcohol and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in male Sprague Dawley rats: A study on testicular morphology, oxidative and cytokines perturbations.

Alcohol consumption alongside combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has attracted research interest, especially because of increasing male infertility. This study investigated the combined effects of alcohol and cART on testicular morphology, biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Rats, weighing 330-370 g, were divided into four groups of six animals each; control, alcohol treated (A), cART, and alcohol plus cART treated (A+cART). Following 90 days treatment period, animals were euthanized, testis extracted, and routinely processed for histology and immunohistochemica

Spine-Adjusting Instrument (Impulse®) Attenuates Nociception and Modulates Oxidative Stress Markers in the Spinal Cord and Sciatic Nerve of a Rat Model of Neuropathic Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Oxidative stress plays an important role in neuropathic pain (NP). Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) can exert beneficial effects on pain outcomes in humans and in animal models. SMT can also modulate oxidative stress markers in both humans and animals. We aimed to determine the effect of Impulse®-assisted SMT (ISMT) on nociception and oxidative stress biomarkers in the spinal cords and sciatic nerves of rats with NP. METHODS: NP was induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. Animals were randomly assigned to naive, sham (rats with sciatic nerve exposure but

MRI-guided intracerebral convection-enhanced injection of gliotoxins to induce focal demyelination in swine.

Demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or transverse myelitis are devastating neurological conditions with no effective cure. Prevention of myelin loss or restoration of myelin are key for successful therapy. To investigate the disease and develop cures animal models with good clinical relevance are essential. The goal of the current study was to establish a model of focal demyelination in the brain of domestic pig using MRI-guided gliotoxin delivery. The rationale for developing a new myelin disease model in the domestic pig was based on the fact that the brain in pigs is ana

Artificial Uterus and Artificial Embryos: Unsolved Tasks.

Ex utero embryo culture is one of the important tasks that has not been completely solved. In the first part of the current review, we focus on potential roles ex utero mammalian embryo culture could play, such as in infertility treatment or ex utero embryo treatment. Particularly, we discuss ex utero genetic therapy of embryos for correction and prevention of congenital pathologies. We also discuss the benefits of ex utero embryo culture in comparison to the traditional surrogacy programs and review its potential influence on social aspects. In the second part, we discuss key methods for ex u

A qualitative study of equine-assisted therapy for Israeli military and police veterans with PTSD-impact on self-regulation, bonding and hope.

Equine-assisted therapy (EAT) is an increasingly popular form of treatment for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who, for one reason or another, find psychotherapy and other traditional treatment approaches unsuitable or unhelpful. However, the concomitant growth of research in the field is yet to engage with key factors relating to EAT; specifically, there are few studies considering the phenomenological perspective of patients, and the embodied knowledge deriving from the lived experience of PTSD patients who participated in EAT-based intervention programmes. Based

Image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound for conduction block of peripheral nerves.

The objective of our work has been to investigate the use of ultrasound image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to non-invasively produce conduction block in rabbit sciatic nerves in vivo, a technique that could become a treatment of spasticity and pain. The work reported here involved the investigation of the duration of such conduction blocks after HIFU treatment and whether they resulted in axon degeneration. The right sciatic nerves of 12 rabbits were treated, under guidance of ultrasound imaging, with repeated 5-s applications of 3.2 MHz HIFU with in situ intensity of 1930 W

Effect of Equine-assisted Biographical Work (EABW) in older adults with subclinical depression: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Preventive approaches for depression in adults aged 50 years and older have received little attention, despite increasing needs arising from demographic changes. In particular, subclinical depression is often underdiagnosed and associated with anxiety, a poorer quality of life, and greater need for assistance from the healthcare system. OBJECTIVE: This multicentre, randomised, controlled phase III trial investigated if Equine-Assisted Biographical Work (EABW) is effective to improve subclinical depression. METHODS: Qualified sites in Germany enrolled 52 participants ≥ 50 years (F

Experiences of Military Veterans in a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program.

Posttraumatic stress disorder commonly occurs among U.S. military veterans. Therapeutic horseback riding (THR) has emerged as an adjunct therapy. We explored 20 veterans' perceived benefits, drawbacks and views of a 6-week THR program. Participants had confirmed diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, or both. Veterans rode the same horse weekly, the same day, at the same time. Data were collected as part of a randomized clinical trial testing the effects of THR on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Veterans responded to an open-ended questionnaire. Content analysis wa

Parameters of the center of pressure displacement on the saddle during hippotherapy on different surfaces.

BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy uses horseback riding movements for therapeutic purposes. In addition to the horse's movement, the choice of equipment and types of floor are also useful in the intervention. The quantification of dynamic parameters that define the interaction of the surface of contact between horse and rider provides insight into how the type of floor surface variations act upon the subject's postural control. OBJECTIVE: To test whether different types of surfaces promote changes in the amplitude (ACOP) and velocity (VCOP) of the center of pressure (COP) displacement during the rider

Computer-controlled drug doses for IV drug self-administration.

This report describes a novel procedure for computer-controlled drug-dose determination for IV drug self-administration studies. By modifying the duration of each infusion of a single concentration of a drug solution, five or more unit doses (mg/kg/inj) can be dispensed from the same syringe. The advantages of this procedure include the following: (a) it is not necessary to prepare a new syringe for each dose change, (b) the sterility of the IV catheter line is broken less often and, (c) the confounding effect of flushing through the catheter line with the previous drug dose is avoided. This p

Will blood-informed design signal the fourth generation of cardiac assist devices?

Mechanical circulatory support devices have profoundly transformed the management of severe cardiothoracic disorders. While heart transplantation is the gold standard therapy for end-stage heart disease, long-term mechanical support devices are a viable alternative for those ineligible and/or those awaiting organ availability. Major technological advancements were made over first 5 decades of development, resulting in improved durability and survival with reduced adverse events. However, gains have tapered recently for various complications (e.g., internal bleeding, multisystem organ failure),

Cytotoxicity, Dermal Toxicity, and In Vivo Antifungal Effect of Griseofulvin-Loaded Vaterite Carriers Administered via Sonophoresis.

The search for novel therapeutic strategies to treat fungal diseases is of special importance nowadays given the emerging threat of drug resistance. Various particulate delivery systems are extensively being developing to enhance bioavailability, site-specific penetration, and therapeutic efficacy of antimycotics. Recently, we have designed a novel topical formulation for griseofulvin (Gf) drug, which is currently commercially available in oral dosage forms due to its limited skin permeation. The proposed formulation is based on vaterite carriers that enabled effective incorporation and ultras
