In this study a new method has been developed to administer sulfur dioxide to experimental animals in order to induce cough for testing antitussives. Sulfur dioxide was packed into aerosol cans equipped with a 75 microliter dosage nozzle. Sulfur dioxide was diluted with the fluorocarbon mixture and the content varied from 15-19% w/w. Three silicon-containing compounds (magnesium trisilicate BP, crushed quartz and crushed Arran granite) were added to the drinking water (250 mg/l) of three groups of male guinea pigs for four months. The extent to which root growth and tooth eruption can be influenced by irradiation trauma was studied in beagle dogs. A cobalt 60 teletherapy apparatus with various dosages between 600 rad and 2400 rad was used to inflict the trauma on the maxilla and mandible. The results showed that the delay in tooth eruption was dependent on the dosage, but erruption could not be hindered. Longitudinal growth of the roots of irradiation, independent of the level of the dose. The periodontal fibers were normally aligned as with healthy teeth; the apex was formed predominantly by surplus cellular cement.

The toxicity of the rodenticidal product Pyriminyl (Vacor) was tested in 4 dogs, 9 cats, 11 coypus and 16 ducks. In the tested dogs the 1000mg dose per kg l. w. was lethal only in 17% of cases. The results demonstrate that the LD50 for the dog is higher than stated in the literature (1000 mg/kg l. w.). Dogs show a high variability in their sensitivity to the product, since some of them died at lower doses. It can be assumed that 1 to 2% field bait will not induce any lethal intoxication in dogs.
