Extensive lesions of monkeypox in a prairie dog (Cynomys sp).

Monkeypox with extensive lesions was diagnosed in a prairie dog that was involved in a recent human outbreak of monkeypox in the Midwestern United States. Gross lesions included oral ulcers, pulmonary consolidation, enlarged cervical and thoracic lymph nodes, and multifocal, small, white umbilicated plaques in the gastrointestinal wall. Microscopic lesions were extensive in the lungs and consisted of fibrinonecrotic bronchopneumonia with vasculitis and poorly defined eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in cells thought to be alveolar epithelial cells, histiocytes, and fibroblasts. In-vivo activity of antivirals against exotic RNA viral infections.

Infection of humans by viruses belonging to the families of Toga-, Bunya-, and Arenaviridae constitutes a major health problem worldwide and certain of the viruses have the potential to cause widespread epidemics. In the search for effective chemotherapy against these viruses several hundred nucleoside and nucleotide analogues have been screened for antiviral activity. Of the compounds tested, ribavirin, has been shown in laboratory animal models to have significant inhibitory effects against Rift Valley Fever virus, the bunyavirus Punta Toro, Hantaan virus and arenaviruses such as Pichinde, J

Animal industry and veterinary science in eastern New Guinea: World War II to Independence, 1975.

We have described the efforts of the Australian administration of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea (TPNG) to establish a veterinary service and viable animal industries. These efforts began with planning before the end of World War II in 1945 and continued until independence in 1975. Whereas pre-war cattle had mostly been used to control grass on plantations, post-war, the objective was to use the country's extensive, unoccupied grasslands for cattle production. During this period, the cattle population increased from 4000 to more than 150,000. The greatest success was achieved in herds w

Lethal Fascioliasis in Capybaras ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in Brazil.

The liver fluke Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda: Fasciolidae) causes fascioliasis, which affects mostly domestic ruminants and humans worldwide. This parasite has an Old World origin and was introduced into the New World by European colonizers. Capybara ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent species, with adults weighing over 60 kg. We report a fascioliasis outbreak caused by F. hepatica that reduced a capybara group from 21 to 2 animals within a 9-mo period. Animal infection and associated lesions were confirmed by postmortem examinations that revealed extensive liver damage a

Global distribution of peste des petits ruminants virus and prospects for improved diagnosis and control.

Viral diseases of farm animals, rather than being a diminishing problem across the world, are now appearing with regularity in areas where they have never been seen before. Across the developing world, viral pathogens such as peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) place a huge disease burden on agriculture, in particular affecting small ruminant production and in turn increasing poverty in some of the poorest parts of the world. PPRV is currently considered as one of the main animal transboundary diseases that constitutes a threat to livestock production in many developing countries, particul

Studies on the epidemiology of trypanosomiasis in sheep and goats in Kenya.

The epidemiology of trypanosomiasis in a tsetse-infested range area of Kenya was studied for 2 years in various breeds of sheep and goats. Observations, including infection rates, PCV, temperature and weight loss indicated that the exotic breeds were more susceptible to natural trypanosomal infection than the indigenous breeds and that the infection may be severely debilitating and in many cases fatal. Observations of tsetse numbers and rainfall in the grazing area during the first year showed that there was a significant correlation between tsetse numbers and rainfall of the previous month. T

Monkeypox: A review of data essential in primary care.

Monkeypox is known to be endemic in Africa, but recently, the unusually increasing number of cases of monkeypox in non-endemic countries has caught the attention of the world. The World Health Organization has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency. The spread pattern is unlikely associated with the previous outbreak outside of Africa, which is related to travelling or contact with exotic animals. The current outbreak is linked to sexual history and presents with atypical localised genital eruptions with an unpredictable onset of viral prodromal symptoms. Although the monkey

[Preliminary epidemiological survey on prevalences of Salmonella spp. at Bissau abattoir (Guinea-Bissau)].

Considering the importance of Salmonella as a mortality and morbidity agent, in particular in children, a study on Salmonella prevalence was performed in collaboration with the Guinea-Bissau authorities through an epidemiological survey at Bissau slaughterhouse. The prevalence rate in 117 bovines slaughtered and approved for human consumption was 13.7%, with 8.5% sampled in the intestine and 5.1% in the gallbladder. Rectal swabbing in 74 live animals resulted in the isolation of S. stanleyville only. On the other hand, no strain was found in hepatic lymph nodes. These strains, some of them pat

First record of natural infection with Anaplasma marginale in sucking lice infesting the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Mexico.

The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is an Asian species of bovine which was introduced in Mexico in 1992, as an alternative for milk and meat production. However, little is known about its associated ectoparasites, in particular about their lice. As a part of a project to identify the diversity and prevalence of Anaplasma in cattle and water buffaloes in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, we visited a ranch in the downtown area in which 42 buffaloes were visually inspected for the presence of ectoparasites. Lice were manually recovered, and morphologically identified using taxonomic keys. They wer

Seroprevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in exotic ruminants and camelids in the Czech Republic.

Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are the protozoan parasites with definitive hosts from order Carnivora. Due to vertical transmission, both parasites can cause abortions and neonatal mortality that lead to significant productive and economic losses in the domestic ruminants. The aim of this study was to describe N. caninum and T. gondii seroprevalence in the group of frequently farmed captive exotic ruminants (n = 184) including Bovidae (barbary sheep, bezoar goat, common eland, American bison, water buffalo, and yak) and Camelidae (bactrian camel, guanaco, llama, and alpaca). [Cutaneous gnathostomiasis, first confirmed case in Colombia].

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by some species of helminthes belonging to the genus Gnathostoma . It has a wide clinical presentation and its diagnosis is a challenge. Tropical and subtropical countries are endemic, and its transmission is associated with eating raw or undercooked meat from fresh water animals. Increasing global tourism and consuming exotic foods have produced a noticeable rise in cases of the disease in the last decades. However, in our country, there has not been any confirmed case of gnathostomiasis previously reported. We present the case of a 63-year-old C

West Nile virus in the United States: guidelines for detection, prevention, and control.

The epidemic/epizootic of West Nile (WN) encephalitis in the northeastern United States in the summer and fall of 1999 was an unprecedented event, underscoring the ease with which emerging infectious pathogens can be introduced into new geographic areas in today's era of rapid transportation and increased movement of people, animals, and commodities. This epidemic/epizootic and the increased frequency of other exotic pathogens being imported into the United States raises the issue of whether local, state, and national public health agencies are prepared to deal with epidemics/epizootics of vec

One health in our backyard: Design and evaluation of an experiential learning experience for veterinary medical students.

BACKGROUND: New educational approaches are needed to improve student understanding of the wider sociological and ecological determinants of health as well as professional responsibilities in related areas. Field trips allow students to observe interaction between plant, animal and human communities, making them an ideal tool for teaching One Health concepts. METHODS: Veterinary medical students participated in a field trip to a local parklands area, frequented by humans, dogs, horses, and wildlife. Students rotated through 5 learning activities ('stations') that focused on: (1) response to ex

First Report of Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus sciuri Isolated from the Urinary Bladder of a Domestic Rabbit in Romania: A Case Study.

Background/Objectives: Staphylococcus sciuri, traditionally regarded as a commensal organism in animals and the environment, is increasingly recognized as a potential opportunistic pathogen with zoonotic significance. Its genomic reservoir of methicillin resistance homologues further raises concern regarding its role in antimicrobial resistance dissemination. This study describes the first documented case of S. sciuri isolated from the urinary bladder of a domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Romania, emphasizing its clinical relevance and antimicrobial profile. Methods: A seven-year-old

Imported disease of dogs and cats exotic to Ireland: Echinococcus multilocularis.

Changes in legislation that facilitate the movement of animals within the European Union may increase the risk that some microbial and parasitic organisms, currently exotic to Ireland, will be introduced by travelled pet animals. It is possible that the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, might be introduced in that manner from any of the several member states in which it is endemic. Red foxes are the principal definitive hosts of E. multilocularis but dogs and cats can also be infected. Infection in the definitive host is of little clinical significance, but aberrant infection of human

History of Shrimp Farming and the Main Viral and Bacterial Diseases in Mexico.

Shrimp farming is probably the most recent animal production activity generating high-quality animal protein, jobs, and economic revenue for many developing and middle-income countries worldwide. Despite the steady growth over the last two decades, aquaculture production has recently seen a decreased growth rate, with infectious diseases being a culprit. Mexico is a major farmed shrimp producer in the world, with the industry generating about USD 1 billion each year and providing jobs for those in vulnerable social sectors. Nonetheless, various viral and bacterial diseases have affected produc

The Role of Male Reproductive Organs in the Transmission of African Swine Fever-Implications for Transmission.

African swine fever (ASF) has evolved from an exotic animal disease to a threat to global pig production. An important avenue for the wide-spread transmission of animal diseases is their dissemination through boar semen used for artificial insemination. In this context, we investigated the role of male reproductive organs in the transmission of ASF. Mature domestic boars and adolescent wild boars, inoculated with different ASF virus strains, were investigated by means of virological and pathological methods. Additionally, electron microscopy was employed to investigate in vitro inoculated sper

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting dogs in Nigeria: epidemiological and public health implications.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods that exert direct and indirect effects on their hosts. Their global importance as reservoirs and vectors of diseases of veterinary and public health importance is well recognized. However, the level of understanding of their role in disease epidemiology varies from one country to the other based on available data. Information on ticks infesting dogs across Nigeria and the public health significance is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to provide information on ixodid ticks infesting dogs in Nigeria. Ticks were collected from 608 owned dogs presented to vet

A simple method to estimate the number of doses to include in a bank of vaccines. The case of Lumpy Skin Disease in France.

A simple method to estimate the size of the vaccine bank needed to control an epidemic of an exotic infectious disease in case of introduction into a country is presented. The method was applied to the case of a Lumpy Skin disease (LSD) epidemic in France. The size of the stock of vaccines needed was calculated based on a series of simple equations that use some trigonometric functions and take into account the spread of the disease, the time required to obtain good vaccination coverage and the cattle density in the affected region. Assuming a 7-weeks period to vaccinate all the animals and a
