Electron microscopy of olfactory epithelia in two patients with anosmia.

Ultrastructural alterations were present in biopsy specimens of olfactory epithelia taken from two patients with anosmia. In both cases, the olfactory epithelia presented a disorganized appearance when viewed by transmission electron microscopy. The number of ciliated olfactory receptors was reduced; few olfactory vesicles were present at the epithelial surface. Where present, the olfactory vesicles usually lacked cilia. Since both patients had a history of head trauma, we speculate that the fila olfactoria may have been severed at the level of the cribriform plate. The histopathologic changes…

Father-to-son transmission of hypogonadism with anosmia: Kallmann's syndrome.

Gonadal and olfactory features of Kallmann's syndrome, usually considered to be inherited as an X-linked recessive trait, were found in a father and son who both had cryptorchidism, hypogonadism, and hyposmia. The father's fertility had been induced with chorionic gonadotropin, leading to the birth of three children. Olfactory and gonadal functions were normal in the mother and two siblings. The father had low basal plasma testosterone and subnormal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH). The affected son and his healthy brother were prepub

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in COVID-19-related anosmia.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mostly manifests with fever, shortness of breath, and cough, has also been found to cause some neurological symptoms, such as anosmia and ageusia. The aim of the study was to present the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of patients with anosmia-hyposmia symptoms and to discuss potential mechanisms in light of these findings. METHODS: Of the 2412 patients diagnosed with COVID-19-related pneumonia (RT-PCR at least once + clinically confirmed) between March and December 2020, 15 patients underwent olfactory MRI to investigate the cause…

Anosmia and Ageusia: Common Findings in COVID-19 Patients.

In a not negligible number of patients affected by COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), especially if paucisymptomatic, anosmia and ageusia can represent the first or only symptomatology present. Laryngoscope, 130:1787-1787, 2020.

COVID-19-induced anosmia associated with olfactory bulb atrophy.

As the global COVID-19 pandemic evolves, our knowledge of the respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms continues to grow. One such symptom, anosmia, may be a neurologic marker of coronavirus infection and the initial presentation of infected patients. Because this symptom is not routinely investigated by imaging, there is conflicting literature on neuroimaging abnormalities related to COVID-19-related anosmia. We present a novel case of COVID-19 anosmia with definitive olfactory bulb atrophy compared with pre-COVID imaging. The patient had prior MR imaging related to a history of prolactinoma …

Congenital anosmia and emotion recognition: A case-control study.

Patients with anosmia are not able to detect volatile chemicals signaling the presence of infectious and non-infectious environmental hazards, which typically elicit disgust and fear, respectively. Social animals may compensate a loss of olfaction by taking advantage of signals of threat that are produced by their conspecifics. Among humans and other primates, body postures and facial expressions are powerful cues conveying emotional information, including fear and disgust. The aim of the present study was to examine whether humans with agenesis of the olfactory bulb, a rare disorder character…

Anosmia and olfactory outcomes following paediatric traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Research into olfactory dysfunction (OD) following paediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is limited. The current study investigated the frequency of OD following paediatric TBI and the relationship between OD and injury characteristics including severity, site of impact and cause of injury. It was hypothesized that children with moderate/severe TBI would demonstrate greater OD than those with mild TBI. DESIGN/METHOD: Thirty-seven children aged 8-16 with TBI were recruited to a prospective longitudinal study at a metropolitan children's hospital. Olfactory assessment, using the Un

[Posttraumatic anosmia: olfactory event related potentials and MRI evaluation].

OBJECTIVE: Using olfactory event related potentials (OERP) and magnetic resonance to evaluate olfactory function in patients with posttraumatic anosmia. METHODS: Twenty four patients with posttraumatic anosmia were reviewed retrospectively. A thorough medical history, physical examination, nasal endoscopy, T&T olfactory testing, olfactory event-related potentials, brain computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance image of olfactory pathway were performed in all patients. RESULTS: Subjective olfactory testing indicated 20 of 24 patients were birhinal anosmia, 2 with right nostril anosmia …

Rapid clinical evaluation of anosmia. The alcohol sniff test.

BACKGROUND: Smell impairment affects 1% to 2% of Americans and leads to frequent physician visits. Olfactory testing is available in chemosensory centers, but not as part of a routine cranial nerve examination. The alcohol sniff test (AST), which uses the standard 70% isopropyl alcohol pad, was developed as a quick, reliable measure of olfactory function. METHODS: Sixty-four patients and 36 healthy control subjects (N = 100) were tested with the AST and with a standard butanol threshold test. RESULTS: The AST reliably, consistently, and correctly measured olfactory function. CONCLUSIONS: Th

Microscopic studies of human olfactory epithelia following traumatic anosmia.

We devised our own instrument for obtaining biopsy specimens of human olfactory epithelium. We obtained specimens from two patients with anosmia caused by head trauma. The morphological changes in the olfactory epithelia were studied by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. With little damage or early stage of changes, the characteristic finding involved degeneration of the olfactory vesicles, especially with the disappearance of cilia. In the case of great damage and the final stage of injury, no olfactory vesicles were found at the epithelial surface and the olfactory epithe…

Anosmia and aggression in male owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus).

Adult owl monkeys behaved aggressively when paired with unfamiliar members of the same sex. Males showed the greatest aggressive responses. When plugs containing bismuth iodoform paste were inserted into the nasal passages of male owl monkeys they fought less readily and showed less contact aggression. Although intermale aggression was not abolished anosmic males spent longer in proximity and showed an increase in olfactory inspections. Control experiments confirmed that the technique used to induce anosmia had blocked responsiveness to conspecific odours and that decreases in aggression were …
