Correction of aphakia with intraocular lens implants.

40 cases of intraocular lens implants are reported. 33% had an optimal post-operative vision of greater than 1.0; 56% and larger than or equal to 0.9 and 84% 0.5 or better. After a postoperative follow-up of 1 month to 32 months, mean 15.1 months, the patients were all satisfied with the pseudophakic eye, and no endothelial corneal dystrophy, chronic uveitis or glaucoma was detected. Several minor post-operative complications were seen, most without consequence. One case had recurrent iridial haemorrhages.

[Anterior chamber intraocular lenses for aphakia correction].

The intraocular correction of aphakia in the anterior chamber currently consists of two options: an angle supported intraocular lens (IOL, Kelman Multiflex) and an iris fixated IOL (Artisan/Verisyse). The angle supported IOL is fixated with four haptic points in the anterior chamber and the iris fixated IOL is enclavated to the anterior iris surface. Acceptable results of both IOLs are reported in the literature; however both IOLs show some long-term complications in some eyes. Alternatives to these anterior chamber IOLs to correct aphakia are the retropupillary fixated Artisan and sclera fixa…

Retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens for aphakia.

BACKGROUND: To assess outcomes of the iris claw intraocular lens implanted in the retropupillary position for correction of aphakia without adequate capsular support. DESIGN: Retrospective study of patients consulted at two private practices and a tertiary public hospital clinic in Brisbane, Queensland. SAMPLES: Thirty-two consecutive patients who underwent posterior chamber insertion of the iris claw intraocular lens alone or in combination with other procedure/s by the same consultant ophthalmologist (GL). METHODS: Lens power was calculated using an A-constant of 117.0. MAIN OUTCOME MEAS…

Secondary intraocular lens implantation after pediatric aphakia.

PURPOSE: To describe our technique for secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in aphakic children and report patient outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our technique for in-the-bag IOL implantion, we used a microvitreoretinal (MVR) blade to separate the capsular leaflets for aspiration of reproliferated lens material within Soemmering's ring. When sufficient capsular opening was not possible or capsular support deemed inadequate, an IOL was implanted in the sulcus. Records of patients with secondary IOL implantation between 1999 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed with regard to int

[Glaucoma secondary to aphakia. Its surgical resolution].

The paper reports on the functional results in the surgery of the glaucoma-aphakia pathologic relation, in a group of 30 patients: several very good, others moderate with uncertain visual prognosis, as a function of the precocity of the operation, blockage site and stage of the disease evolution. The good results obtained in the surgeries of the cases without the presence of the vitreous body in AC are evidenced.

Aphakia versus pseudophakia. A clinico-pathological study.

Eighteen enucleated pseudophakic and 14 aphakic eyes were histopathologically described. An analysis was made of the histologic data in combination with clinical information. In conclusion, cataract extraction with subsequent implantation of an artificial lens seems to bear a higher risk than cataract extraction alone, notwithstanding-perhaps--better technical work during implant surgery. The presence of an intraocular lens may induce either fatal inflammations or complications necessitating other surgical interventions, which may contribute to a fatal outcome. However the proportion of enucle

Myopia-aphakia. I. Prevalence of retinal detachment.

Retinal detachment after cataract extraction occurred in nine out of 136 eyes with myopia of 6 or more dioptress (6-7 per cent), during a follow-up period of 1 1/2-9 1/2 years. Five of the nine detachments occurred within 3 months of cataract extraction. All patients with retinal detachment were under the age of 63 years. Relatively young patients with high myopia bear a special risk of developing retinal detachment after lens extraction. The possible reason for this is discussed.
