Incidental appendiceal neoplasms in patients undergoing appendectomy for acute appendicitis: a 10-year retrospective analysis of 5001 cases.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neoplasms are rare clinical entities often diagnosed incidentally during surgery for acute appendicitis. This study aims to investigate the incidence, histopathological diversity, and clinical characteristics of appendiceal neoplasms detected in patients undergoing appendectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records and histopathological reports of 5001 patients who underwent appendectomy between January 2016 and December 2025 at a single tertiary center. Patient demographics, preoperative imaging findings, intraoperative observations, and detailed h…

How to differentiate primary mucinous ovarian tumors from ovarian metastases originating from primary appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: a review.

The accurate distinction between primary and secondary mucinous ovarian cancers is a crucial tool for effective surgical and systematic treatment. Mucinous ovarian metastases of appendiceal origin are a special group of tumors because they appear even in half of female patients with primary appendiceal mucinous carcinomas and demonstrate pathological similarity to primary ovarian mucinous neoplasms. The current literature review focuses on the differences based on pre-operative symptoms, radiological findings, the spectrum of microscopic features, and the significance of the immunophenotype of

Surveillance of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms for progression to pseudomyxoma peritonei: Results from a structured surveillance programme.

AIM: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) of the appendix is a rare tumour that can progress to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). There is a lack of standardization of surveillance following resection of LAMN as the progression rate to PMP is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of progression following resection of LAMN to PMP in a structured surveillance programme. METHOD: Data for all patients referred for LAMN surveillance from 2013 to 2021 were retrospectively collected. The surveillance regime consisted of annual CT and tumour markers for a 5-year period. Patien

Intestinal intussusception with a tadpole-shaped low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm as the leading point: a case report.

A tadpole-shaped appendix has been described as a characteristic morphology of appendiceal mucinous lesions, but its clinical and ultrasonographic significance has not been fully clarified. We report a case of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) in which a tadpole-shaped appendiceal lesion acted as the leading point of extensive intestinal intussusception. A woman in her 60s presented with abdominal pain and difficulty with defecation. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated extensive intestinal intussusception extending to the transverse colon. At the leading point, the long-axis vi

Synchronous Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm and Neuroendocrine Tumor Presenting as Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Case Report.

Synchronous primary neoplasms of the appendix are exceptionally rare. We report a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (NET) arising within the same appendix and presenting as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). A 44-year-old man undergoing staging for a solitary plasmacytoma of the left acetabulum was incidentally found on computed tomography (CT) to have extensive peritoneal mucinosis. Diagnostic laparoscopy confirmed diffuse PMP, and appendectomy revealed two synchronous appendiceal primaries: a perforated LAMN (pT4a pNX) and a 6 mm, grade

The Odd Couple: An Extremely Rare Coexistence of Ovarian Serous Carcinoma and Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm.

Serous neoplasms are the most frequently encountered tumors of the ovary, typically arising as primary lesions. In contrast, mucinous tumors of the appendix are well-documented for their association with mucinous ovarian tumors and pseudomyxoma peritonei. To date, only one case has been reported in the literature describing the synchronous occurrence of a serous ovarian neoplasm and an appendiceal mucinous tumor. We present the second documented case of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) occurring concurrently with a serous carcinoma of the ovary. A 68-year-old postmenopausal fem

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm associated with Urothelial carcinoma: A rare case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION: and importance: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a rare neoplasm found in the appendix vermiform. Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are usually seen by accident during investigations or surgeries for other reasons in the abdomen. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous tumors have no specific symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual case of a 72-year-old man with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, which was found accidently during the investigation of the bladder tumor on a CT scan. Pathological examination of the specimen showed a cystic dilation at the distal tip

Isolated Metastasis to Fallopian Tube Mucosa by Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: Report of Two Cases.

Isolated metastases from non-gynecological cancers to the fallopian tube are rare. Recent literature suggests that mucosal alterations of the fallopian tube should be considered primary tubal lesions. This has led to a paradigm shift in the classification of ovarian tumors with studies proposing tubal origin for these tumors, and clinicians advocating distal salpingectomy to decrease rates of ovarian cancer. This is based on the theory that sole presence of tubal mucosal disease is evidence of tubal origin. We present two patients with isolated mucosal metastases to the fallopian tube from app

Emergency laparoscopic ileocecal resection for a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with impending rupture: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: We report the case of a patient with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) who underwent emergency laparoscopic ileocecal resection to avoid the metastatic spread of tumor cells due to an impending rupture. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman presented to our hospital with pain in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Computed tomography revealed a markedly tense appendiceal mucinous tumor with surrounding inflammation, and laboratory test results showed elevated serum C-reactive protein (7.47 mg/dL), indicating impending rupture of the appendix.

[A Case of Strangulating Intestinal Obstruction Caused by Coiling of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm to Terminal Ileum].

The patient was a 67-year-old female without a history of surgery. She presented with an abdominal pain and vomiting, and was rushed to our hospital. The abdominal pain was severe, but no peritoneal irritation sign was observed. Abdominal CT scan revealed a strangulating intestinal obstruction and accumulation of ascitic fluid. Emergency surgery was performed for diagnosis and treatment. The intraoperative finding showed serous ascitic fluid and strangulating intestinal obstruction caused by appendiceal tumor coiling around the terminal ileum, which had become ischemic with thinning of its wal

Endometrial involvement in pseudomyxoma peritonei secondary to low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: report of 2 cases.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a clinical condition characterized by the presence of mucinous ascites, usually with variable amounts of neoplastic enteric-type mucinous epithelium, and most commonly secondary to spread from a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. We report 2 cases of pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms where there was colonization of the endometrium (both cases) and cervical mucosa (1 case) by low-grade atypical enteric-type mucinous epithelium (CK20 positive and CK7 negative). The patients had symptoms of mucoid vaginal discharge and

A mucinous tumour by any other name: variations in terminology of mucinous appendiceal neoplasms involving the ovary and omentum.

Mucinous tumours of the ovary can arise as either primary or metastatic tumours, especially from the appendix. Our study aimed to investigate the different terms used across Canada with respect to ovarian or omental involvement by an appendiceal primary tumour. Retrospective data from January 2010 to October 2022 were collected using an internal pathology database at a single centre for cases of ovarian or omental involvement by an appendiceal primary tumour. Reports were reviewed for terminology used. Subsequently a survey was sent to Canadian academic centres, asking pathologists about their

Perforated Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm With Long-Term Progression to Pseudomyxoma Peritonei in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rare tumors that may present as appendiceal mucoceles, with perforation carrying the risk of mucin dissemination and subsequent pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). We report the case of an 83-year-old female who presented with lower abdominal pain and was found on CT imaging to have an appendiceal mucocele. Laparoscopic appendicectomy revealed a perforated appendiceal mucocele with disseminated mucin, and histopathology confirmed a pT4a LAMN with perforation at the tip and a clear base. Despite its initially indolent course, surveillance over two

Ultrasound and clinical features for differential diagnosis of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and acute suppurative appendicitis.

AIM: To investigate the application of ultrasound along with clinical features for the differential diagnosis of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and acute suppurative appendicitis (ASA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The ultrasound and clinical data of 76 patients with histopathologically confirmed LAMN (31 patients) and ASA (45 patients) were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate analysis and binary logistic regression analysis of the influencing factors were conducted to identify LAMN and ASA. The AUROC was calculated to analyze the diagnostic efficacy of these independent factors. A

Incidental Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Found During Appendectomy in a 15-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare gastrointestinal tumors, often underdiagnosed due to their variable presentation. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are particularly significant because of their association with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a condition that increases the risk of abdominal recurrence. This report presents the case of a 15-year-old female with no prior medical history who developed nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Imaging revealed features consistent with appendicitis, leading to a laparoscopic appendectomy. Histopathological analysis confirmed a low

Low back pain as main symptom in Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN): A case report.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. It is also the main cause of the limitation of activities and absence from work in much of the world and a cause of great economic burden. The greatest percentage of low back pain is classified as nonspecific (i.e. not attributable to a defined pathology), while the others may concern specific pathologies of the lumbar region or suggest pathologies of non-musculoskeletal origin. Consequently, evaluating any signs and symptoms mimicking musculoskeletal conditions is crucial. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 6

Duplicate appendix complicated by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: a rare case report and review of the literature.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) have been a very controversial tumor, and there is a lack of standardization for the optimal surgical procedure due to the infrequency of this disease. This is the first case report of duplicate appendix complicated by LAMN. The preoperative imaging examinations revealed that the mucinous tumor was shrinking spontaneously, allowing for safe laparoscopic resection. The histopathological findings indicated a dilated common base of the duplicated appendix, suggesting that the mucinous content drained spontaneously to the cecum. Further studies of t
