Knowledge-guided adaptive educational support for traditional Chinese medicine using large language models and knowledge graphs: integrating Confucian educational principles.

INTRODUCTION: The Confucian principle of "teaching students in accordance with their aptitude" remains challenging to implement at scale in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) education. We developed an Intelligent TCM Tutoring System integrating a large language model (LLM) with a domain-specific knowledge graph (KG) derived from the Golden Mirror of Medicine and evaluated its system performance and short-term educational outcomes. METHODS: System outputs were rated by five TCM teachers. In a three-group pedagogical experiment, 125 student volunteers were randomly allocated to self-directed l…

The roles of parent and teacher support in students' academic development: Do associations change over the course of adolescence or is support always important for all students?

Teachers and parents are two important sources of support for students. During adolescence, relationships with different social interaction … faction, and truancy, whereas only parent support was positively associated with students' academic aptitude self-concept and achievement on standardized tests. These associations remained invariant over time. Moreover, the findings did not depend on students' gender, migration background, or socioeconomic status. We discuss implications of these results f …

Variations in the use of simple and context-sensitive grapheme-phoneme correspondences in English and German developing readers.

Learning to read in most alphabetic orthographies requires not only the acquisition of simple grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) but also the acquisition of context-sensitive GPCs, where surrounding letters change a grapheme's pronunciation. We aimed to explore the use and development of simple GPCs (e.g. a ➔ /æ/) and context-sensitive GPCs (e.g. [w]a ➔ /ɔ/, as in "swan" or a[l][d] ➔ /o:/, as in "bald") in pseudoword reading. Across three experiments, English- and German-speaking children in grades 2-4 read aloud pseudowords, where vowel graphemes had different pronunciations according to

The association of grey matter volume and cortical complexity with individual differences in children's arithmetic fluency.

Only a small amount of studies have looked at the structural neural correlates of children's arithmetic. Furthermore, these studies mainly implemented voxel-based morphometry, which only takes the volume of regions into account, without looking at other structural properties. The current study aimed to contribute knowledge on which brain regions are important for children's arithmetic on a structural level, by not only implementing voxel-based morphometry, but also cortical complexity analyses, based on the fractal dimension index. This complexity measure describes a characteristic of surface

Intellectual functioning in Silver-Russell syndrome: First study in adults.

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare genetic disorder (estimated incidence 1/30,000 to 100,000 live births). So far, only a few studies have focused on the cognitive profile of individuals with SRS, and these were conducted some time ago, concentrated on pediatric cohorts, and included patients who had been diagnosed using a variety of clinical diagnostic systems. There has yet to be any research on the intellectual functioning of adults with SRS. This study sought to establish the intelligence, strengths and weaknesses within intellectual profile of adults with SRS, compared with normative

The application of a multi-dimensional assessment approach to talent identification in Australian football.

This study investigated whether a multi-dimensional assessment could assist with talent identification in junior Australian football (AF). Participants were recruited from an elite under 18 (U18) AF competition and classified into two groups; talent identified (State U18 Academy representatives; n = 42; 17.6 ± 0.4 y) and non-talent identified (non-State U18 Academy representatives; n = 42; 17.4 ± 0.5 y). Both groups completed a multi-dimensional assessment, which consisted of physical (standing height, dynamic vertical jump height and 20 m multistage fitness test), technical (kicking and handb

The effect of deprivation on the developmental activities of adolescent rugby union players in Wales.

The developmental activities of rugby union players and their interaction with deprivation remain to be elucidated. Five-hundred and ninety elite junior rugby union players (14.8 ± 0.5 years) were split into deprivation quintiles. These players subsequently completed a participant history questionnaire to record their involvement in rugby and other sports. Players accumulated 1987 ± 1297 h in rugby between 6 and 15 years of age. During the mini rugby stage (6-10 years of age), players accumulated an average of 113 ± 105, 89 ± 69 and 43 ± 19 h per year in rugby play, practice and competition, r

Phonemic-Morphemic dissociation in university students with dyslexia: an index of reading compensation?

A phonological deficit constitutes a primary cause of developmental dyslexia, which persists into adulthood and can explain some aspects of their reading impairment. Nevertheless, some dyslexic adults successfully manage to study at university level, although very little is currently known about how they achieve this. The present study investigated at both the individual and group levels, whether the development of another oral language skill, namely, morphological knowledge, can be preserved and dissociated from the development of phonological knowledge. Reading, phonological, and morphologic

Is there a causal link from a phonological awareness deficit to reading failure in children at familial risk for dyslexia?

The knowledge that reading and phonological awareness are mainly reciprocally related has hardly influenced the status of a phonological awareness deficit as the main cause of a reading deficit in dyslexia. Because direct proofs for this theory are still lacking we investigated children at familial risk for dyslexia in kindergarten and first grade. The familial risk was genuine; 40% developed reading deficits in first grade. However, we did not find any relationship between a phonological awareness or other phonological processing deficits in kindergarten and reading deficits in first grade. F

Cognitive-linguistic performances of multilingual university students suspected of dyslexia.

High-performing adults with compensated dyslexia pose particular challenges to dyslexia diagnostics. We compared the performance of 20 multilingual Finnish university students with suspected dyslexia with 20 age-matched and education-matched controls on an extensive test battery. The battery tapped various aspects of reading, writing, word retrieval, phonological processing and other cognitive functions relevant for dyslexia. Reading and writing were examined in the two domestic languages, Swedish and Finnish. The most prominent group differences in reading and writing emerged on accuracy meas

A cross-sectional study of mathematics achievement, estimation skills, and academic self-perception in students of varying ability.

This study investigated students' mathematics achievement, estimation ability, use of estimation strategies, and academic self-perception. Students with learning disabilities (LD), average achievers, and intellectually gifted students (N = 135) in fourth, sixth, and eighth grade participated in the study. They were assessed to determine their mathematics achievement, ability to estimate discrete quantities, knowledge and use of estimation strategies, and perception of academic competence. The results indicated that the students with LD performed significantly lower than their peers on the math

The effects of Irlen colored lenses on students' specific reading skills and their perception of ability: a 12-month validity study.

Recent evidence suggests that a specific visual-perceptual dysfunction not normally assessed by eye examination should be considered as a significant cause of reading problems. The use of tinted nonoptical (Irlen) lenses to minimize this dysfunction has been hypothesized to result in significant improvement in reading and other visual-processing skills. The present study involved 44 subjects with reading disabilities (33 males, 11 females), aged between 9 years 1 month and 15 years 11 months, who had been provided with Irlen lenses. Assessment of subjects' perception of their own ability (Stud

Relations of sociodemographic variables and cognitive ability: a comparative analysis of the cognitive scores of high school seniors.

This paper compares subgroups using cognitive scores from a test battery administered to high school seniors in the base year survey in 1980. The procedures used to select the sample were designed to yield a data base that can be statistically projected to represent the national population of about 3,040,000 high school seniors. Comparisons were performed to examine differences in cognitive scores by age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and census region. Boys scored higher than girls on mathematics and visualization tests, but lower on the picture-number and mosaic comparison tests

Measles Foci Reduction Neutralization Test (FRNT).

The plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are both widely used to assess immunity to infectious diseases such as measles, but they use two different measurement principles: ELISA measures the ability of antibodies to bind to virus components, while the PRNT detects the aptitude of antibodies to prevent the infection of a susceptible cell. As a result, detection of measles virus (MV) neutralizing antibodies is the gold standard for assessing immunity to measles. However, the assay is laborious and requires experience and excellent technica…

Developing a new empathy-specific admissions test for applicants to medical schools: A discourse-pragmatic approach.

The ability to empathise with patients is an important professional skill for doctors. Medical students practise this skill as part of their medical education, and are tested on their use of empathy within their final examination. Evidence shows that appropriate training makes a difference but that natural aptitude also plays a role. Most medical schools, therefore, probe applicants' basic understanding of empathy at admissions interviews. The purpose of the project presented in this paper was to apply existing understanding of how empathy may be communicated in a clinical context (building on…

[Creation and validation of a forensic protocol to assess psychological harm in battered women].

Psychological harm is one of the sequela of the victimization of a crime. Nevertheless, a diagnosis of psychological harm, that is, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), does not constitute sufficient evidence alone given that, in legal terms, faking or false testimony must be detected and eliminated before an expert testimony can be admitted. To assess the aptitudes and strategies for faking psychological harm associated with domestic violence, 101 women were asked to fake psychological harm using the MMPI-2 and a forensic clinical interview. The results showed that most women (84.2%) were ca…
