Mutations in the NKX2-1 gene cause a syndromic disorder affecting the brain, thyroid, and lungs. There are few case reports in the literature discussing the association between NKX2-1 gene mutation and neurodevelopmental disorders. In this case report, a 12-year-old girl with an NKX2-1 gene mutation, articulation disorder, and specific learning disorder is presented. This report discusses the potential neurodevelopmental risks associated with NKX2-1 mutations. Future research may further clarify the potential co-occurrence of these conditions, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding

Systematic sound preference, where a group of sounds with the same manner of articulation is represented by one or two sounds in the production, is one of the characteristics of children with phonological disorders. This article examines the hypotheses advanced by Weiner (1981) for the phenomenon in the light of the data from a 7-year old Portuguese speaking child. The findings support some of the hypotheses, while providing counter evidence for one of them. They also point to the importance of word position and stress patterns in the systematicity of systematic sound preference.

This article describes a school-based telehealth service delivery model and reports outcomes made by school-age students with speech sound disorders in a rural Ohio school district. Speech therapy using computer-based speech sound intervention materials was provided either by live interactive videoconferencing (telehealth), or conventional side-by-side intervention. Progress was measured using pre- and post-intervention scores on the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation-2 (Goldman & Fristoe, 2002). Students in both service delivery models made significant improvements in speech sound productio

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the frequency and characteristics of reading disorder comorbid with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD).
METHODS: Articulation times and reading errors were evaluated using four Japanese reading tasks (a monomoraic syllable reading task, a word reading task, a non-word reading task, and a short sentence reading task) in 31 children with PDD (22 boys and 9 girls) aged 6-14 years (average 9.5 years) and 39 children with AD/HD (33 boys and 6 girls) aged 6-12 years (average 9.6 years). Poor readers (PRs) were identi

This study used a double-dissociation design to evaluate whether children with ADHD demonstrated specific deficits relative to children with Reading Disorders. Recent theory suggests that ADHD children have deficits in time perception and working memory, whereas RD children have deficits in phonological decoding. The performance of 113 clinic-referred children aged 6-11 was examined using measures of working memory, phonological processing, and time perception. Respondents completed two time production tasks in which they were to judge when 30-s had elapsed, and another in which they were aske

A total of 37 children ages 8 to 14 years, screened for word-reading difficulties (23 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, ADHD; 14 controls) completed oral reading and rapid automatized naming (RAN) tests. RAN trials were segmented into pause and articulation time and intraindividual variability. There were no group differences on reading or RAN variables. Color- and letter-naming pause times and number-naming articulation time were significant predictors of reading fluency. In contrast, number and letter pause variability were predictors of comprehension. Results support analysis o

Disturbances of vocal function in patients with apraxia of speech are well known in the literature and have often been described. Although apraxia of phonation is presumed, only 1 case is mentioned in the literature. We present a 51-year-old man (with missing signs of dysarthria and aphasia after spontaneous right temproparietal hemorrhagia) who had aphonia and missing respiration during speaking, whereas articulation was nearly undisturbed. After differential diagnostic exclusion of other central disorders of phonation we classify this patient as having apraxia of phonation or laryngeal aprax

Fibrous dysplasia of bone may occur also in the facial skeleton. Main locations are the lateral midface and the mandible. The foci, which are sharply circumscribed in most cases, produce tumour-simulating deformities of single of several facial bones and, in part, disorders of the articulation are bulbar displacements. In contrast to Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia is a disorder of the younger age groups. Apart from bony changes, Albright's syndrome (which occurs in women only) comprises also irregular, circumscribed café-au-lait patches and signs of somatic and sexual precocity.

The prevalence of speech disorders among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been reported to be as high as 89%. Speech impairment in PD results from a combination of motor and nonmotor deficits. The production of speech depends upon the coordination of various motor activities: respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance and prosody. A speech disorder is defined as impairment in any of its inter-related components. Despite the high prevalence of speech disorders in PD, only 3-4% receive speech treatment. Treatment modalities include pharmacological intervention, speech therapy,

PURPOSE: Changes in acoustic features in the perioperative phase for elucidating the mechanisms of articulation disorder and the effect of perioperative rehabilitation were studied prospectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients with 62 tongue cancer were divided into a partial glossectomy group (n = 40) and a reconstruction group (n = 22). Acoustic characteristics were analyzed during the preoperative and postoperative periods and after rehabilitation using the first and second formants of the vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/; the triangular vowel space area (tVSA); and the slopes of forman

Twenty-four French-speaking children with developmental phonological disorders (DPD) were matched on percentage of consonants correct (PCC)-conversation, age, and receptive vocabulary measures to English-speaking children with DPD in order to describe how speech errors are manifested differently in these two languages. The participants' productions of consonants on a single-word test of articulation were compared in terms of feature-match ratios for the production of target consonants, and type of errors produced. Results revealed that the French-speaking children had significantly lower match

UNLABELLED: A young child with macroglossia of unknown cause was seen for treatment to modify resting tongue posture and improve speech sound production. Evaluation of the treatments indicated positive change in resting tongue posture and a modest change in speech sound production. Treatment for such patients can be complex and must consider orthodontic and/or surgical interventions, because an enlarged tongue can influence growth, development, and physiology of the oropharyngeal complex. The speech-language pathologist must be prepared to deal with the complex of problems demonstrated by pati

Variability in the speech production patterns of children with developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) was investigated in a three-year longitudinal study of three children with DAS. A metric was developed to measure token-to-token variability in repeated word productions from connected speech samples. Results suggest that high levels of total token and error token variability and low levels of word target stability and token accuracy characterize the disorder. Overall levels of variability and patterns of change over time differed between participants. Longitudinal patterns were indicative of d

This paper presents a reconceptualisation of apraxia of speech (AOS) and reviews a range of acoustic and articulatory data which have been reported on apraxia of speech. Data from both domains, and previous theoretical debate are discussed as support for this cognitive-based reconceptualisation.

Real-time ultrasound scanning was employed as biofeedback therapy to correct a persistent articulatory speech defect in a subject. The subject continuously imaged her tongue with a transducer placed submentally. During a speech exercise, the subject could compare her tongue's positioning and movement with an ultrasound image showing the correct tongue placement prerecorded onto video tape by a speech therapist. Preliminary results suggest that this technique could be a valuable addition to speech therapy.
