Ascariasis imaging: pictorial essay.

Ascariasis is not widespread in Europe, and the knowledge on how to diagnose and treat the disease is limited to some specialists. On the other hand, clinicians are facing an increasing number of immigrants from high-prevalence countries and are, therefore, challenged to update in this field of infectious diseases. Here we present current knowledge on this infection in 2 parts. The first part discusses clinical features and hot topics in ascariasis, and the second part presents imaging features of ascariasis as a pictorial essay.

Right-sided scrotal ascariasis.

We report a case of 35-year-old male patient who presented with painful right side of scrotum and worm pouting out of the scrotum. The patient had undergone surgery for strangulated right inguinal hernia 2 years back. On exploration we found multiple adult Ascaris worms in the scrotum with right-sided hydrocele. All the worms were removed and eversion of sac was done.

Biliary ascariasis: surgical aspects.

Presentation and management of 204 patients with biliary ascariasis seen over a period of 5 years is reported from a highly endemic area of Kashmir. Ultrasonography is the single most useful means of diagnosis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is extremely helpful. Most patients respond to conservative management and around one-fifth of all patients require surgery.

Uncommon presentations of ascariasis: A case series including gallbladder ascariasis and Löffler's syndrome.

Gallbladder ascariasis is an uncommon manifestation of ascaris lumbricoides infection, typically seen in the endemic regions. Even rarer is the concurrent presence of Löffler's syndrome. We report the two cases - the first, a 92-year-old male, presented with typical biliary colic and was diagnosed with gallbladder ascariasis. The second, a 38-year-old female, presented with respiratory symptoms and was found to have ground-glass opacities on high-resolution computed tomography and peripheral eosinophilia, later associated with gallbladder ascariasis on imaging. Both cases were managed conserva…

Multimodality imaging of pediatric ascariasis.

Ascariasis is a prevalent intestinal helminthic infection caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, commonly known as roundworm. While the disease may remain asymptomatic when the parasites are confined to the intestinal lumen of the small bowel, symptoms and complications can arise when the helminths invade the biliary tree or pancreatic ducts. In cases of severe infection, a mass of roundworms can lead to intestinal complications, such as bowel obstruction. The morphological identification of Ascaris by multimodality imaging techniques plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, as well as in the monitorin…

Biliary ascariasis - A vicious cycle.

Biliary ascariasis is a rare disease in a non-endemic area. However, it is one of the possible etiological factors for retarded growth as well as malnutrition in children. It may cause intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, biliary obstruction, liver abscess, hepatolithiasis, and pancreatitis in adults. Herein, we report a patient with ascending cholangitis secondary to biliary ascariasis who was successfully managed with Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreaticography.

Anthelmintic drugs for treating ascariasis.

BACKGROUND: Ascaris lumbricoides is a common infection, and mainly affects children living in low-income areas. Water and sanitation improvement, health education, and drug treatment may help break the cycle of transmission, and effective drugs will reduce morbidity. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and safety of anthelmintic drugs (albendazole, mebendazole, ivermectin) for treating people with Ascaris infection. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Disease Group Specialized Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, three other databases, and reference lists of included s

HEPATOBILIARY ASCARIASIS COMPLICATED BY PANCREATITIS.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the commonest organism causing soil-transmitted helminth infection. It is particularly common in poor sanitary conditions. Nevertheless, involvement of the gallbladder by Ascaris is a rare entity. A lady presented to us with long-standing history of vague abdominal symptoms suggesting dyspepsia. Ultrasound showed a tube like structure invading the biliary channels. Serum amylase was elevated and the patient was managed conservatively, as for acute pancreatitis. She improved clinically, but subsequent imaging with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed worm

[Coincidental finding of biliary ascariasis].

We describe a case of biliary ascariasis in a 27-year-old Philippine au-pair with recurrent upper abdominal pain. Hepatobiliary ascariasis is rarely seen in non-endemic areas. The diagnosis is important because severe complications can occur. If migrated into the biliary tree, it is recommended to perform endoscopic extraction combined with antihelmintic therapy. In severe cases, the recommendation is laparoscopic cholecystectomy and peroperative exploration of the common hepatic duct.
